Now heres where the fun lies.

My (admittedly inflammatory) post currently stands at Flamebait=1, Informative=5, Overrated=2, obviously moderation points are being wasted. But are all of those fair? Surely it wasn't worth 5 Imformative points. So the Overrated is valid. Flaimbait, yes, maybe even a few more of these. But not really a good flame, it is so predictable.

Even better, the response to my post calling me on karma whoring and incomplete Google linkage has even better moderation. Flamebait=1, Insightful=1, Overrated=1, Underrated=1 currently. Personally, I'd say the Insightful is the only one it really deserved, the Overrated and Underrated cancel each other out and I'm not interested in responding so it can't be a proper flame, right?

Oh, and this post? -3 Offtopic, definately.

A search on google for sa.windows.com reveals nothing. But notice the line that says: Find web pages that contain the term "sa.windows.com". Click that link and you get plenty of results. Hmm, first search result is to a privacy page on that domain, that provides some clues. Second link is to an archived message from the NTBugTraq list, that might be a great place to find an answer. The eighth result is a link to an article on LockerGnome, a page or two down and you have a nice concise explanation of what sa.windows.com does.

Now should I complete the whoring and post a cut and paste?

You're absolutely right, Valve licensed the Q1 engine, modified it and released HalfLife after Q2 came out. Don't believe me? Take a look at the archived version of id's page from about a year and a half ago. Read the second paragraph under the heading The GPL'd QUAKE Engine, which says in part "Remember this engine is the foundation for what Valve did with Half-Life..."

Thats why all the HalfLife mods look rather simple compared to today's 3d games, the core engine is somewhat limited. As the parent post mentioned, even though it is an old engine, complex geometry can bring even the heftiest modern gaming rig to its knees, it is just the way the game engine is designed, simple stuff screams but get out of hand with your level geometry and you'll slow everyone down.

  12. Laches on Suddenly a JPEG Patent and Licensing Fee · · Score: 2
That is a very interesting article, does anyone have informed opinions to add, other examples of case law or anything that would illustrate how this principle might apply?

For example, if Forgent Networks can show that they had very good reasons not to bring this earlier, they may well be able to defend this patent. On the other hand, given the widespread use of .jpeg technology and presuming their patent obviously covers all the widespread uses, the fact that they've waited far past the 6 years mentioned in that article might show presumption of laches.

As others have mentioned, this patent seems more oriented towards video and many of the current formats have not been in wide use for the above mentioned 6 years. Digital video seems to be a minefield of patents...

This game ate up hours of time at a previous job, my buddy and I had to finish 'one more game', what felt like two miniutes of gameplay was more like 20. Further development on the Windows client was stopped like 4 or 5 years ago due to the copyright/trademark issues but various compatible clones have popped up, including the tfast variation.

I gotta get my buddy playing again...

Yeah, its a shame that they didn't go into CS a little more. A mod of a game built around an engine pushing 6 years old commands more online servers than stuff released in the last two years. But it is Popular Science, they approach the Weekly World News for credibility and substance.

FWIW, the Kali server tracker shows 17039 CS servers, 19714 total Half-Life servers (CS, TFC, DOD, DM, etc). That compares to 3612 Q3 servers, 2842 UT servers and 26190 total game servers across all games. Of course, I don't think Kali quite tracks all the new games that have moved to their own server tracking services (or something like Battle.Net). But it still illustrates the power CS has.
