Exactly. All the elementary particles are 0-dimensional , point-like particles. As they are 0-dimensional they cannot have a shape. Also, this means only head-on collisions are possible in particle accelerators.

Fermi's paradox assumes that the alien civilizations out there sent radio signals in the directions of Earth when they were on the same technological level as we now. Or do you thing Earth's radio waves will be detected 1000 ly from us in 1000 years by some alien race which will be on the same level as us now? I pretty sure our radio waves will be undetectable from the cosmic background noise.

Also, any advanced alien civilization must have some kind of 'ansible' device and does not use radio waves. Let's face it, radio waves are _slow_ in space. You cannot build a space civilization with radio waves. So, if FTL is really not possible forget any star trek like fantasy.

  15. Re:Causality on Quantum Setback For Warp Drives · · Score: 1

This whole causality thing will go away if we accept that time is not a dimension but only an illusion. In short, time does not exist. It is only the human brain (and some animal's) that cause the illusion because we remember the past and, to a certain extent, can predict (calculate) the future.

How does this affect the causality paradoxes? There will be no more paradoxes simply because the observers receive false information due to the fact the speed of light (which is the information carrier) is limited.

You provided a link to a paradox, but it does not explain anything. Why should Bob get the message from Carol at C? The FTL bullet paradox is much better explained. IIRC, the paradox is that the target of the bullet is dead in A person's time frame but still alive in B person's time frame. So, B can send an FTL message to the targeted person to save his life and this is a paradox as the person is already dead in A's time frame.

However, B obviously receives false information due to the information carrier's limitation (limited speed) and in reality the person is really dead. So, B cannot save him and there is no paradox here.

  18. It may not that great on NASA Mars Rovers Hit 5-Year Anniversary · · Score: -1

In the communist countries actual production always exceeded planned production. This was not due to superior execution rather intentionally setting the goals too low. For example, if you have to draw 10 circles in a day, you can obviously exceed the "plan" as you can draw far more.

This may be the case here, too. The 90 days of operation seem to me intentionally low and it looks like the /. community hails the continuous operation as superior engineering achievement. I just like to remind the /. community that most likely this 90 days of operation was set by the management and not by the engineers.

So, the NASA management played it safe and shot for a very low goal. And it looks like the /. community fell for an old trick of the communist countries.
