    Not likely. The GOP's current strength comes from its marriage to fundamentalism and moralizing christians. The more puritanical the US becomes, the stronger the republican vote. For the republicans to lose, the appeal of puritanism would have to decline in the US. But with all the current religious fervor over "intelligent design", "stem cells", "fags", etc. the old farts will continue to wield power. If anything I expect support to increase.

    The american mullahs are in power.

    Consider how many people voted for bush for the sole reason that he opposed gay marriage. iraq war? foreign policy? domestic policy? taxes? etc. nope. the only thing that matterd to them was a prez who was against homos.

    can they tell if the tv is in your neighbors apartment on the opposite side of the wall than yours? i doubt it.

    can they tell if the oscillator is picking up aerial or the output from your DVD player or PS2? i doubt it.

    the false positives and negatives from such a system are mind bogglingly huge.

    hell there are enough false positives and negatives as it is. plenty of dismissed court cases, which gives you an idea how accurate they are.

    has anyone actually seen the inside of a so called detector van? i doubt it.

    how do they tell its receiving the BBC and not the output from your DVD player or PS2?

    the false positives and negatives for so called "detector vans" is so mind bogglingly huge as to be completely useless.

    which is why they use databases of addresses instead.

    Whereas a big company that emerges from bankruptcy will probably not have the same inept management in charge.

    The only times I have seen this actually happen is when said management was criminally indicted.

    All other times it's been that everyone seems to think the same morons who led them into bankruptcy will lead them on a glorious path back to massive success.

    very, very few companies re-emerge from bankruptcy and return to anything resembling success. for most companies bankruptcy is death.

    there are only so many steve jobs in the world though.

    also, apple did have at least some promise when jobs took over. they had real (though aging) products to sustain them, they had a very loyal customer base. they had a project and a plan, apple just needed guidance.

    everything that was sgi has been commoditized by PCs, and they have alienated their customer base. there is nothing left of sgi. there arent even crumbs left. if you are going to transform something, you need something left to transform -- an empty shell will not do.

    SGI slowly rotted from the inside. I remember around 1997-1999 corresponding with sgi people on some projects. it was basically a revolving door. SGI kept firing engineers, often who were the only people who knew how something worked.

    SGI ended up with piles of nifty hardware that nobody knew how to use.

    i think it was about mid 1998 that i concluded SGI was doomed. sgi bet the farm on itanium and had no backup plan. they thought big iron would rule forever, and that PCs were beneath them.

    If there were some detrimental effect from fluoridated water, we would have seen some observable difference in effects on populations receiving fluoridated water vs those receiving non fluoridated water in the past 60 years don't you think? But the only difference we observe is a marked reduction in tooth decay in the population receiving fluoridated water. If there is any other difference, it is so small as to be unmeasurable by modern statistical methods.

    I'm open to evidence, if you have any. Playing "what if?" games is a silly waste of time.

    fluoridated water, along with vaccination and family planning, are a few of the major public health accomplishments of the 20th century. yet you will find very vocal detractors for each of them.

    you'd die of water poisoning before you'd suffer adverse effects from any fluoride in tap water. a small amount is better than zero, if it reduces risks of decay and has virtually no negative effects.

    why not whinge about chlorinated water? the concentrations are far higher and chlorine is extremely toxic (which is why it was used in WWI as a weapon).

    there are a few studies which have shown a correlation between fluoridated water and a reduced risk of bone fractures in the elderly. so it appears fluoridated water can help strenghten bones.

    yes, i recall some studies which showed a connection between consumption of fluoridated water and reduced risk of bone fractures in elderly people. so it appears fluoride not only strengthens teeth, it strengthens bone as well. a win all around.

    the dose makes the poison. how much fluoride do you think there is in tap water anyway? now compare that to the chlorine in tap water which is far more toxic. lest one forget, chlorine was used in WWI as a weapon.

    publishers produce actual product which they ship and sell to consumers.

    IP holding companies like NTP produce nothing, and sell nothing to consumers. they extort fees from companies who actually do the producing and selling. it's basically a free ride, totally parasitic in nature. they get someone else to do all the hard work for them.
