Actually he does have a good point, why should any poor programmer use the GPL if they can't make money from it? I think he should just open microsoft up to BSD licenses in non-monopoly areas of MS code. I don't see any need for MS office when there are a few good office suites already on BSD & linux.
I'm a lot more of an opponent to microsoft than the typical linux zealot here, I'm actually making a new BSD with brand new things to make it simple to run. First thing I'm doing is putting a MS office compatible group of apps in the GUI, this should make it worthwhile to switch because most people want to work with MS office files.
Sure, my software is free [as in choice], not free as in [I let you freeload off a poor kiwi]. The sooner you people stop insisting that programmers mustn't earn money for their work, the better.
I know I'm going to get modded down by some free as in beer geek, but I think it's only fair to be paid for work you do & anything else is freeloading.
Carnivore is just the domestic version of the Echelon system for use on americans by americans. Echelon is used for those situations where your government wants to read information on foreign companies, organisations & individuals.
I wonder how many tourists, immigrants and US citizens that work for foreign owned companies or belong to international organisations there are. It could easily be over 12 million people in the USA at any time are being watched by Big Brother. Carnivore is just the tip of the iceberg on this issue.
In that case, you get TelstraClear cable for the same price and a better 10 gig prepaid limit. A prepaid limit just ensures that you pay more to get more traffic, not cut you off.
see my website http://neural.net.nz running from a 128k TelstraClear cable modem, which has no restrictions on what services you use.
I'm planning to make seriously large amounts of money from these technologies. I'm developing a hybrid P2P / Messaging / Semantic Web service protocol called Samizdat. I want to be able to see someone's website, look up their files and instant message them with a request to swap files we don't have yet. This is a valuable service and I want to bring it to the world. I figure that I could easily make real money for the convienence of an internet suite of apps that do that just as convient as an office suite.
Actually, I'm on the TelstraClear network which does charge a fair price for 128k, 10 gig per month with full rights to run websites, P2P, etc. You only pay more when you go over the prepaid limit, I'm not a rich media company but I can afford to do what I want online.
NZ Telecom play fair? with a comment that naive you have to be in auckland... I have 128k on TelstraClear, 10 gig a month, no blocking, just the usual data interception by the secret service... [they don't like it if you turn down a job offer...] The Herald is only the leader in Auckland, mainly because it's the only daily paper there. The national leader is the Evening Post. Math is beyond the capacity of most journalists, ignorance is the tool of a good story. Telecom pays about 0.5 per gig, NZ has enough drivel with the Crimes Amendment Bill (#6) [data interception act]
I get to vote against those new zealand politicians this year, I just hope we still have the main opposition party strong enough to block some very bad laws...
Oh joy, $150. I can get a cheap alcatel for NZ$150, nevermind that expensive US$. FWIW, I wouldn't get rebates here in Wellington, NZ. The land of Lord of The Rings has a dollar which is very low to the US dollar. Which is what my nickname means, a place where the dollar is only good for a cheeseburger or a can of soda. The only rediculous thing is that we pay export prices for our local goods.
Anyway, I wouldn't bother with a battery hog like the Clie, it doesn't even have a cellphone part.
My town has had 100Mbps Fibre Optic for several years now, the pricing is about NZ$2200 (about US$1k) per month at the top rate.
Slashdot had a story on Wellington, NZ a couple of months ago. Just ignore the badly written ZDNET article if you find it, power doesn't go down fibre optic.
I'd rather have a monochrome Treo that is a phone/PDA than just a PDA, even if it's a really cool color Sony handheld. Battery life is important, I'd rather be able to use a Treo for 3 days than 1 day with a Clie.
I actually live in Wellington, New Zealand where LOTR was shot and edited. Sure A Beautiful Mind is cool, but LOTR deserved better.
What I want is a IBM 110 GHz cpu in a powermac, which would be about 550 GigaFlops of Fun. Imagine a Beowulf Cluster of them, all rendering a HD animation in Maya or Electric Image. Damn, I wish I had a few of Peter Jackson's millions to play with.

I think the most important invention was fire, Al Gore gave it to us when he stole it from our corporate gods back in the prehistoric era of 9 years ago. Al Gore, Inventor of the Internet, Fire Stealer and 5th wheel of democracy. God Bless Al Gore for discovering the United States of America and rigged elections in Florida.
All encryuption above 128 bit is banned from export by US citizens and companies.
To put this in perspective, the NSA has been breaking 128 bit DES encryption with a custom hardware design IBM provided for them in 1976.
Fortunately, skilled cryptographers like myself are working outside the USA to secure our part of the internet. New Zealand doesn't have the 128 bit export license issue that the NSA forced on the USA 55 years ago. I am currently creating a 300k (300 kilobyte) encryption system, which is can't be broken by existing computer technology. Not even a 110GHz IBM cpu is fast enough to break 300k. Quantum computing is capable of breaking it, but they only have individual quantum transistors today. The error checking for quantum computing requires an ordinary chip at the same speed or better to ensure a reliable result.
Actually I am starting my own company, in New Zealand if the government doesn't pass the Digital Library Act. (you have to give them your info at your cost) However if that stupid MP for Wellington Central has her way, I'll make sure the previous idiot for Wellington Central gets his seat back.
Your company would be better off if you use a firewall with a immune computer, iMacs are cheap and good for an internet cafe area.
Of course I'm funny, I'm one of those damn foreigners who lives in the land that Lord of the Rings was filmed in.
If they aren't in the music stores, on the radio or easy to find on gnutella, then they are to all extent unknown. I've never heard of your "active artists" but I have heard Courtney Love and 9" nails. Actually, I was responsible for getting the first live concert transmitted on the internet in 1993. That band was a bunch of Civil Servants (I live in the Capital) who were a bit weird to deal with.
Dumbass corporate artists are the only artists who get played on the CanWest networks, CanWest owns 2 major TV channels & 7 major radio channels, the closest competitors are the boring state TV channels & Radio channels (2 each) The only way to get around corporate stupidity and state censorship is by independant internet sites and filesharing. I'm currently working on an encrypted filesharing / semantic web sharing protocol to avoid censorship employed by certain governments and corporations. I think it's better to have independant information than to restrict it.

Actually, no I'm not paranoid. I have been offered jobs working for the secret service on cryptography. I know what they can and cannot do. I know what is broken and what can't be broken. I know about the machines that are made just for code breaking and I know which codes. Using several different codes with the same key is asking to have the message breaked. You're making things a lot easier to attack from several points.
Sure, I'm going to remember the name of the chief engineer of a band whose album I haven't played in several years... I've worked with independant artists before, you soon find out why they nobody has ever heard their music before.
The amount of productions you make is irrelevant if there is less interest in those productions, frankly I'm not that interested in long winded discussions on intellectual property. It's election year in my country, the labor party is going to get about %50 and the conservatives can't win more than 33% until 2005. Nothing is going to change in New Zealand, so there is no chance of artists or companies getting more rights to copyright.
I accept Courtney Love's position because she is somebody real, not a dumbass corporate artist like Metallica or Dr. Dre .

In comparision, my 300k keys are generated from unique one time pads about once a second. Why not exceed their capacity to decode?
Actually, no. I've written tens of thousands of lines so far. I'm just waiting for new information to arrive.
I'm not willing to comply with some narrow definition of open source just to get on SourceForge. Besides, I have over 10 gigs of space on my personal server, SourceForge only gives you 100 meg.
I'm working on an orignal operating system, it's mostly brand new technology (I'm still waiting for a few books to be printed) that brings several new ways of doing things.
Kaos is based on an exokernel, not some old kernel and has extremely high grade encryption embedded in the kernel modules.
I have many points in my comment, if you lack the ability to concentrate on reading a single page, you're dumb. Actually he is opening up to more control if you read his article carefully.

I think copyright should only be 50 years or life +25, whichever is shorter, depending of couse on how long you live. People are still playing Elvis and Buddy Holly songs on the Radio 50 years after they were recorded. This would mean Buddy Holly songs would be public domain by the 80's, Elvis songs would start going into public domain in a few years. It's enough time to make money for the family of the dead artist, which is needed for children, etc.
