IMO, there are 3 reasons why FOSS doesn't hurt programmers.
1. Some programmers write software for a specific companies internal use. They don't compete with OSS or MS.
2. Some programmers are hobbyists and don't care if they make money or not.
3. Some programmers would love to make money selling software, but they know that even if their software became popular, MS would squash them like a bug. Or maybe they already did. MS killed a lot of small companies on their way up, and the programmers who lost their pet projects to them have nothing to lose with OSS.
The operative phrase is "used correctly". Text warnings for real twisters is good, but judging by by the wolf-crying weather monkeys on TV, they'd use it for every breeze, and by the time the real thing came, nobody would listen.
It's also a fact that anything our government does turns to shit. When we see how badly they fuck up what they're already doing, naturally we're reluctant to give them MORE to fuck up.
A more fundamental problem is potentially their body shape. Fins are great for swimming (which is important in an aquatic environment, obviously), but they suck if you want to manipulate things and maybe use tools.
OTOH, maybe they can manipulate things with tentacles and developed brains to compensate for poor swimming, just as our ancestors developed brains to compensate for lack of claws and fangs.
I tried writing years ago, and quit when I realized how badly I suck. However, I might give it another shot, considering that some of the professionals seem to suck too.
My TV watching dropped BEFORE the writers strike. Right now, there are 4 shows that I give a *bleep* about. 24 (not on now), Heroes (ditto), Prison Break (close to season finale), and Terminator. Move over, BSD, TV is dying!
In any case, if Microsoft had made XP default to "User" instead of "Admin" when making new accounts, it would still have been just as unacceptable! Windows 2000 was widely-used as a consumer OS, so their product was just as broken in Windows 2000. The only change is we would have been having this discussion six years ago
Really? I don't know anyone outside of/. who used Windows 2000 as a consumer OS. I sure never saw Windows 2000 boxen at CompUSA/WorstBuy. I do agree that if MS had done the right thing with XP, we would have gone through this 6 years ago, but by now it would be old history.
The real problem is that the programmers of these products simply do not care about QA, or about making good software. They just want to do the absolute bare minimum to struggle along, and they don't give one whit of care for the user who has to disable a useful OS feature to make their crappy product run, or the admin who struggles for a week trying to figure out what crazy-ass registry keys and folders their crappy software needs access to.
No, but they would care when their customers demand a refund because their games don't work.
I DO blame Microsoft for making XP default to Admin. The reason developers never fixed their broken software is because for 90% of users, who use the defaults, it WASN'T broken. It still worked, just like it did in Win9X.
Trust me, if the born again Christians broke off and formed their own country, it wouldn't be that much different from Iran or any other Muslim state.
That, IMO is the distinction between the two religions. There IS no Christian country ruled by Fred Phelps, or anyone like him. MANY Muslim countries are ruled by their equivalant of Phelps. It seems to be the norm for them.
Robots? Meh, just give me a spacesuit and a can of beans.
Been there, done that. Actually, my immediate supervisor agreed with me, but he couldn't really say that.

the terrorists win!

Hmmf! When I was growing up, there WERE no computers in the home. Get off my lawn!
Don't worry, you'll get there soon enough.

if we miss.

My shows sucked BEFORE the strike. I don't see that changing.

Which is one reason I prefer Fedora.

Well, Facebook still has one thing in common with Black Holes. They both suck a lot.
would give up a 50" TV for 6 months of sex?
My aunt got a whole bunch of Hilary-spam. She commented that she started as a Hilary supporter, but was sick of her because of the spam.
Also, I got 50 messages on my answering machine from McCain before Super Tuesday.
Yes, because the reason they don't work right is Microsoft's stupid license enforcement.
Actually, I don't they will hire anyone who got caught snooping through other people's stuff either.
I know there had to be SOMETHING good about Vista.
Even Microsoft knows better than to mess with Oprah!

There are certain crimes where waterboarding is an acceptable punishment. Loading Vista on underpowered boxes is one such crime. Just my 2 cents.
