There's a big difference between losing a few thousand people in a single attack in 1941 (or even 2001), and having planes constantly bombing your cities (Britain), or even foriegn armies occupying your whole country (France).
And losses on other people's soil (Iraq) don't affect our infrastructure the way Europe was affected by its own people/resources getting blown up.
In my state, in order to get your license(after the written and driver's test), and to renew it afterward, you must identify signs WITHOUT the text, blank stop signs, blank wrong way signs, etc
Really? In my state, though I had to identify the signs to get my license, I haven't had to do so since. And the last time I took a written driver's test, they still had "dinosaur crossing" signs.
...but pick someone you know and trust, not someone on a TV ad or who comes to the door holding a baby....
But I DO trust that woman who came to my door holding a baby. She was a total stranger, but very smart and she told me how to vote on every issue/candidate. How can you NOT trust a woman holding a baby?
More likely the President tells the Congrssional leadership what he wants and they write the desired laws. Imagine how much editing would be required if Bush wrote the legislation himself!
I doubt that it will make any difference. I just got an email that my workplace is finally going to install SP2! They'll probably upgrade to IE7 about the time I start using FF8 at home.
What a coincidence! I got the same message, and I don't even have a PayPal account! I'm sure glad they were able to track me down so I could enter my info.
IOW, if you're in Canada and too poor to go to the USA for treatment, you're screwed (imagine what will happen to your poor knee in 5 years). If you're in the US and poor, you're screwed (you might get your knee fixed, but you're bankrupt).
Conclusion: unless you have money, you're screwed in either country.
I have very mixed feelings. My iBook "just works". It seems both easier and more reliable than my Windows machines, especially any Windows craptop, er I mean laptop, that I've used. I don't worry about security either.
However, I prefer the Windows interface, though that might be because I've used it a lot longer, and it seems quite a bit faster than the iBook. Also, Windows has a lot more available software.
Windows gives me more problems than the Mac, but for day to day use, I prefer Windows.
Nuclear holocaust? A few years ago, my city had a massive icestorm. Hundreds of thousands of people were without power for about 2 weeks. Guess what? No internet!
Yes, I could have mailed from work, or from one of the few remaining mailboxen in my neighborhood. But what if snail mail had been phazed out as obsolete? And what if the 2 week outage had been 2 months?
It depends on the person. I've seen 6'1" muscular guys who were just fine at 225. From your self-description, you're a wreck at 220. That's understandable too, especially if you gained a lot of fat quickly.
And, to let you know where I'm coming from, I'm about your height and 10 pounds lighter (210). I'm clearly overweight, but still healthy and reasonably fit. I have a "spare tire" but no double chin and I can still run up 3 floors of stairs. My ideal weight is probably around 185, but my excess hasn't hurt me too much, at least not yet.
Remember that humans are, and always have been, hunters. It is "in-born" to every human to be capable to kill other species. It is also "in-born" to every human to battle other humans for geographical area, just as it is in-born to thousands of other species. "If necessary" you too will kill (by this I mean that there are defineately ways to make you kill someone, for example, if you thought greater good would come of it, say in a hostage situation, or in self-defense). It's just your definition of "if necessary" that's different. That's something you were taught
Humans are also social animals. We will kill for food or defense, and fighting for territory falls into both categories. But rational, stable people don't kill their own kind. Unfortunately, determining "their own kind" IS taught. A child brought up in a racist household might be a normal, stable person, but he's brought up to think of other races as "them" instead of "us". Ditto for religion, nationality, or any other dividing characteristics.
Excellent points! One of the biggest flaws of Win3X, and to a lesser extent Win9X, was that a badly written app could block its "cooperative multitasking" and freeze the system.
However, allowing a badly written app to blantantly interrupt a mission-critical app (or an embarrasing one like the PP presentation) is bad too.

So you're the one. You realize that your munching was interfering with our enjoyment of the movie?

Compared to the people on the ballet, Cthulhu IS the lesser evil!

In Missouri, they just took away the party ticket option. I expect to hear a lot of whining about that. :(
I'd also recommend voting with your mouth. IOW, if they don't have paper ballots complain. Loudly!
I haven't voted yet, but according to the instructions they mailed to me, my machines will be the same.
I doubt that it will make any difference. I just got an email that my workplace is finally going to install SP2! They'll probably upgrade to IE7 about the time I start using FF8 at home.
Actually, it IS a mean lie. I can't afford a BMW, you insensitive clod!

Yeah. They get their viri from fecal matter. We get ours from Windows PCs.
It's a mutating virus! That's why the words are different.
And even when they've already been posted recently.

November 1? There must be a mistake. It's not even a Tuesday! They should at least give us until November 14 (2nd Tuesday).

Nah! Mensa members are all scrawny beanpoles.

Symantic's suckiness isn't Microsoft's fault. I only mentioned it to answer your question.
Popping up a message at any unpredictable time, instead of when you're least likely to be in the middle of something IS Microsoft's fault.
Perhaps because Symantic is one of the very few companies that suck worse than MS!
