    Think about the password suggestions. Longer than 7 character, mixed case, numbers and special characters. Then think about the average MySpacer.

    Likewise, many "Christian" mass murders had nothing to do with religion. Hitler didn't kill Jews because he was "Christian". He killed because he was an evil killer. Many wars of "conversion" are really wars for territory/resource/plain hate, and religion is an excuse. Without religion, they'd find another excuse and still kill.

    And, AFAIK, radical atheists have never been in control of an agressive country, but I could easily imagine a bunch of asshat atheists trying to wipe out believers. Christianity, or religion in general does NOT have a monopoly on violent asshats.

    Here's my 2 scents about homosexuality. It certainly is a sin. So, IIRC, is premarital sex. With the possible exception of slashdotters, not too many people are in a position to cast the first stone.

    Yeah, but couldn't the taxi driver assist the blind passenger with the ATM? I mean, all the blind guy has to do is hand the card to the driver, tell him the PIN, and the driver can withdraw the money for him. No Braille is needed.

    IMHO, the big problem is that the SSN is not only treated as an ID, but also as a PASSWORD!!! It would be like me using "Cro Magnon" as my password, and wondering how my /. account got hacked! *runs off to change password*

    Maybe, but why do the people in poor countries accept and even welcome the sweat shops, horrible working conditions, repression, etc? Perhaps, because it's better than what they had before?

    I've been in that situation many times. I've gotten lost, I'm trying to find a certain street in the dark, and some @$$ is riding my rear bumper! Naturally, I'm not going to handle a road I don't know as quickly as I drive the roads in my area.

    (USA) I've found the middle lane to be the best lane to be in. I avoid the traffic getting on and off the highway in the right, and I don't block the speed loons in the left lane. If I'm taking a long trip with few exits, I'll go into the right lane until I have to pass someone.

    c) I maintain my speed and switch lanes to pass, if possible. If I can't switch lanes, I match the slowpoke's speed at a safe distance until I CAN pass.

    That depends on where the battlefield is. With our overwhelming edge in the sea and air, the Chinese couldn't get anywhere near us.

    However, no amount of air power can conquer a large country alone. We would need ground forces to actually conquer China, and they can field an army the size of our entire population!

    One of my old cow-orkers was notorious for talking endlessly about things, especially his daughters. One of my other cow-orkers admitted that if he had a couple of hours to kill, he'd go to V's cube and say "Hey, V, how are your daughters doing".

    I'm 46, and though I go to bed and get out of bed about the same times I always did, there are a lot more nights when I wake up in the night, and end up listening to the radio for 1-2 hours until I drift back to sleep. I seldom did that until I hit 40.

    I'd happily use Chinese if it was the only one, I don't really care which it is. However there are more english speakers than chinese speakers and written english is orders of magnitude simpler than written chinese.


    Do you have a source for that? Everything I've read says that Mandarin has far more speakers than English. I've also read that spoken Chinese isn't any harder than any other language, though the lack of common vocabulary makes it a challenge for English-speakers.

    I do agree with you about written Chinese. Keeping all those pictures straight would be MUCH harder than writing any language with an alphabet.

    To be fair, most of us old people have never had to deal with that either. It's always been something that happened SomewhereElse (tm), not here. Though, with all the info floating around, it certainly COULD happen here if the wrong people got into power (no remarks about the current ones).
