Interestingly, the highest ranking countries on that list aren't known as "major" countries. Germany is tied with Estonia at 11th, France is tied with the Czech Republic at 19th, and Britain is below the US, tied with Hungary and El Salvador at 28th!
50% of the world is NOT free! If you count number of countries, the shithole dictatorships far outnumber the free countries. If you count number of people in non-free countries, China makes 25% single-handed. I'd trust the US, even now, more than I would trust "the world".
Yes, but as another side note: do the higher-ups in government actually believe this? A frightening scenario exists when the public believes this to be true and those in power do not...
Yes, it is frightening when the higher-ups think they are the masters when they are supposed to be the servants. It is even scarier when the higher-ups think they are the masters, and the people agree!
Yes, it DOES suck! Like the above poster, I'm also a libertarian and until 2004 I voted Republican. Under Bush, it's become clear that the Repubs are as pro bloated government & anti-freedom as the Dems, and they currently have more power than the Dems did.
Is it the best possible constitution? No. Is it the best constitution that actually exists? Maybe, maybe not. Is it better than a one-world government where most of the member countries are dictatorships? Hell yes!
They are factors but not insurmountable ones. For 95% of your activity simply recharging your BEV overnight would be good enough. Think about it -- you go to work (30 miles in my case -- that's probably average for the US), work all day, then you go home. Even if you go out and party until last call your car still has several hours to be recharged before you go back to work.
95% isn't good enough. I only have one car, and it has to handle 100% of my needs. At least once a year, my GF and I drive out of town to visit her relatives, usually in my car. That trip is over 200 miles each way, and I don't want to waste several hours recharging. Assuming there IS any place to recharge out in the boondocks where her relatives live.
I used to work across the street from a mall. Unless we were getting rain/snow/sleet/hail, I liked to walk there for lunch. Some of my cow-orkers took their cars, and by the time they got out of the parking lot, through the traffic, and into the mall lot, I was almost there on foot.
Wasn't there also a Swine Flu back in the 70's? And more people died from the vaccine than from the flu. I predict that the Bird Flu will combine with the Swine Flu. Beware the Flying Pig Flu!!
Actually, I've heard that many Catholic schools teach evolution. Ironically, you might have less religion in a Catholic school than in a Kansas public school!
Agreed! I'm all in favor of questioning evolution. It shouldn't be a "sacred cow". If it stands up to questioning, that's fine. If it doesn't, that's fine too because then we'll learn something. I don't think a biology class is going to debunk ID because it is really based on faith. That's also why I don't think ID belongs in a biology class.
And the next time something stupid happens in California, I'll be glad I live in the midwest. No place is more shallow than Hollywood, and there are probably more stupid people in California than in Kansas. The stupidity just takes different forms.
I'm from Missouri, within spitting distance of Kansas. *spits across state line* And, though I have a religious upbringing and have no problem with the IDEA of an Intellegent Designer, I don't think it should be taught in a science class. Science is the process of finding out how the universe works, and ID doesn't belong there.
The flaw that exists to be exploited is in people. The tool most often and visciously used to exploit that flaw has been religion
And when they don't use religion, they use something else (nationalism, communism, etc). Religion isn't the problem. Evil leaders + sheeplike followers is the problem.
My experience is the opposite. My Dell craptop's CD borked after 6 months, and its sleep function was never very good. I've had my iBook about a year with no problems at all.
My iBook is 100% OSX. I still have Linux on my desktop, and if everything's working fine, I like it better than OSX. However, I'm tired of the effort to get and keep everything working right, and the Mac JustWorks (tm).
Hmm, it seems to me that families would likely have more than one computer, at least if they have kids. Of course, money and desktop space are issues, but a lot of people are rich enough to handle it.
I didn't get rid of my Windows/Linux desktop when I bought an iBook. Actually, when I do replace my desktop, I might get one of the Intel Macs and boot between all 3 OSs.
A few years ago, I tried installing Linux on a new machine. I had had good results on my previous box so I wasn't expecting any trouble. Bzzt, wrong! RH and Suse both failed to install. Linspire installed, but was almost as unstable as Windows. Mandrake did install, but I wasn't quite happy with it. I got Slackware mostly working with a lot of work, and Debian Sarge mostly working with a little work, but neither was 100%.
Windows came pre-installed and the basics worked, but for some reason, it couldn't see the printer driver on the CD.
My iBook just works, with far less effort than Windows or Linux.
Years ago, I bought a Dell laptop. Within 6 months, I was calling it a "craptop". I ASSumed that all laptops sucked - until I bought an iBook. The hardware was cooler (in more ways than one) than the Dell, it was more robust than the Dell, and of course, it has a better OS than the Dell.

The same Britain that tracks your every move from cradle to grave? Bwahaha!

*cautiously raises hand*

That brings up an interesting question. If Zeus was the god of the Greeks, who would be the god of the Geeks?
I'm waiting for one who is without sin to throw the first stone. I think I'm in for a long wait!
That's not quite true. Linspire defaults to root, which isn't good, but knowledgable users can create a user account just like in any other Linux.

Agreed, but at least he's thinking outside the Republicrat box. That's the first step to enlightenment.
