Last time I tested a Tivo there was no 30 second skip ahead, or 20 second skip back function available without a hack. Is this still the case? My mother isn't going to hack anything. I'm still looking for an out of the box component that she can us that will let her easily skip commercials
There is an undocumented 30 second skip, but I don't use it myself, and I don't remember off the top of my head how to do it. I usually just FF past the commercials, and Tivo's FF is much faster than ye olde VCR's, and just as easy.
I live in Kansas City, MO with about a million people. I don't know what the record number of homicides are, but 2005 is quite a bit worse than 2004, and it seems like there's another almost daily.
I wish I had mod points. I've had the same gripes about inflation. The stuff I want might be dropping, but the stuff I need is going up like a rocket.
Regarding crime: My city has had 116 homocides this year. That averages a killing every 3.15 days! That's just the fatalities. There are also shootings/stabbings/assaults that aren't fatal. Also, my city didn't even make the Top 20 list of most dangerous cities!
A dog isn't always practical but can do triple duty as alarm, deterrent, and defense system. You can't treat it as an appliance though. You're adding a family member for ten or fifteen years
When I was robbed, everyone told me "Get a dog". They couldn't seem to understand that I don't like dogs! For me to get a dog just for security doesn't make sense. It would suck for me, and it would suck for the dog.
The analogy is good, but the cost is very different. If you buy a Mac and decide it sux, you're out a couple thousand. If you uproot your entire life to move to another country and it sux, you're screwed!
Also, there's a question of whether it's any better. There might be some areas where Canada is better than the US, and other areas where it's worse, perhaps disasterously so.
Europe opposed Iraq because their own selfish interests were with Saddam. And the main reason they're against corporations raping the people is because they think that's the job of the government.
IMO, K5 used to be good. Slashdot was better for tech stuff, but K5 had some good political stuff. But the last year or two, K5 has gone downhill. The trolls have conquered it, and all the sane people have left. Except me.

I don't remember the story right now, but recently I saw cries of "Dupe" on a story when I never saw the original. Turned out, the original was posted Saturday evening. Plus, it gives us something to b!tch about.
* Holiday sales: Who will buy PowerPC iBooks (or other Mac hardware) during the holidays, with the Intels coming out in January? If you want to keep your computer for a few years, as many consumers do, you'll want the Intel.
Some people will buy BECAUSE they're the last PPC based Macs. There will still be plenty of PPC based software for years to come.
* Version 1.0: Who wants to buy version 1.0 of the Intel-based Macs, fresh out of design and off the production line?
Some people want the latest and greatest. They either trust Apple to get it right the first time, or are willing to put up with early glitches.
* No apps: Who wants to buy a platform with no native apps?
Plenty of people bought the early PPC models, didn't they? Even though the software was for the 68K. As long as what they have works as well on the MacTels as they did on the PPC, people will buy them.
US Citizens tend to think they live in the free-est of free countries in the world, where other countries (especially European countries) point at the US for it's lack of freedom.
Other countries (especially European countries) point at the US for it's lack of freedom while totally ignoring their own gaping flaws.
The countries near the top of that list aren't very influential and probably wouldn't be in charge. With the possible exception of Germany, the countries who would be more likely to control it are only slightly better than us (Canada & France), worse than us (Britain), or teh sux0r (China).

:)
BTW, does Pahrump, NV even have 116 people?
No, but you might beat the lion to the tree. It depends on how close is the lion, how close is the tree, and how fast each of you is.

TVs don't make that noise anymore. I'm 45 and I haven't heard that noise in years.

No, but I got an email from my bank stating that there is a problem with my account and they need my account info.
Actually, I thought of Howard Dean.

The potholes are where the gold used to be. That city got jacked!
Actually, I bought my house for about that. However that was 13 years ago, and it was the "bad" part of town then and it's much worse now. :(
To RIAA: I've seen your pool. If you were smart, you'd be suing Sony BMG yourselves.
Bingo! People are always asking how Bush could win. It's because the Dems ran one of the few people in the country who couldn't beat a total idiot!
Europe opposed Iraq because their own selfish interests were with Saddam. And the main reason they're against corporations raping the people is because they think that's the job of the government.
They don't care if you uninstall what you've bought, but they will care when your subscription runs out and you tell them to fsck themselves!

Of course, half those stories are dupes.

Some people already find the actions of our politicians and corporations barbaric.
That's not limited to TV or games. I've reacted that way when someone interrupted me when I had my nose in a good book.
Chinese and Hindi might reach a lot of people, but they'd all be clustered in one place. English can reach people in all the continents, not just one.

But nobody is tracking my car, or my ass. And if you think walking will hide you from British tracking, just look at the nearest camera and smile.
