That link you post is pure conjecture, with ZERO evidence to back up the hypothesis. I call bullshit.
I can't fathom (har har) how anyone can use the imperial system. It takes me MINUTES to work out how to convert from metric to imperial, just like the original poster screwed up the imperial to metric conversion. I think in metric, as does almost everyone outside the USA (not to imply that imperial is less intuitive for everyday use). It's evidently a learnt thing, not a mind thing. The idea that the imperial system is somehow NATURAL and OF THE MIND is one of the most rediculous and possibly ameri-centric ideas I've yet seen on Slashdot. And that's saying something.
Mac OS 9 had autorun but Mac OS X doesn't. Probably because of the virus risk posed by it - and the risk from DRM which looks like a virus, walks like a virus and quacks like a virus.
Maybe you reinstall Windows every month, two months, three months, maybe even 6 months.
After I got an iBook, I stopped reinstalling Windows. After about nine months, it all went to hell. Sure, it still worked for most things, but it kept crashing and crashing and crashing.
Windows might be relatively stable for geeks who have a reinstall cycle but for ordinary people it certainly is NOT.
It's not flash that is the problem then, simply the MISUSE of it. This is slashdot, and even most of the "copyright is fun and tastes yummy" brigade wouldn't want P2P nets shutdown just because most use is illegal.
Same with flash: if you don't like how it is being used then complain about that, complain to the people who misuse it but DON'T complain about the technology itself.
Don't like it? Don't install it or use it. You are not being forced to use flash so how on earth does this impact you?
The fact is not all uses of flash are bad - as an animation technology used by people who aren't idiots (eg Homestar Runner) it is quite good. So having continued support for Flash on Linux is a good thing - if you personally hate all flash then just don't use it! That simple!
How is such protectionism going to help them? Sure, they won't be getting paid $1 a day any more... they'll be getting paid $0 a day! Strike down those imperial wage shackles my brothers!
Great idea! That's exactly the kind of veiled protectionism I expect from enlightened slashdot readers who don't give a rat's about, well, anybody else.
Protectionism doesn't raise the wage of overseas workers, it either lowers it to compensate for the increased cost or it means they lose their jobs.
Huge companies aquire mountains of patents. Huge companies use cross licensing agreements to protect themselves from each other and the little guys still get screwed.
Patents don't give small companies a chance to screw big companies (why should they be able to anyway, even if they do come up with good ideas?), they just let big companies screw little companies and individuals even more.
I don't think anyone, except a tiny minority, is arguing for the abolition of copyright. Just that THIS PARTICULAR bill is stupid, and representative of modern copyright as a whole.
Looking up from my laptop, I SWEAR I can see a 192 node cluster - Bunyip at the ANU - running Linux. It says "high performance computing cluster" though, so it must be a figment of my imagination.
I know I'm going to lose karma for this but why does "I know I'm going to lose karma for this" et al almost invariably result in a post modded UP even if it is a troll?
Which is contradictory how? Make sense not you do.
He owns a Mac box for desktop use, Solaris for his server, a Windows tablet PC (there really is no functionally equiv. alternative tablet platform) and OpenBSD for his laptop (really the only odd one out, probably as his system for x86 coding).
Looks to me like he's chosen "the right tools for the right jobs," just like he says in the article.
Can you spell metres?
PS It's a joke, I am aware that the American running dogs spell things differently.

Brings new meaning to the term "get high," eh?

FYI, Firefox uses Gecko, Safari OTOH uses KHTML.

What part of "in development" don't you understand? The "in" or "development"?
Dear sir, are you Denis Leary?
What kind of site? Slashdot.

It DOES handle WMV files prior to the WMV3 codec.

So is Mandrake making more money now? Damn, now I'll have to hate them irrationally like RedHat. Gotta fit in here... :p

He's right. LCDs don't have scan rates because THEY DON'T SCAN.

Most Mac OS X games are ports from DirectX to OpenGL (by hand at OmniWeb or using Transgaming technology - WineX basically - at Westlake).
If it sells, expect to see a Mac OS X version.
Or pandering to anyone who happened to win the genetic lottery and be born beautiful.
Let me guess, that wasn't you? Hehehehehe.

You troll.
Barto.
Congratulations, you've won this month's Captain Obvious award!

Pfft. KDE looks better on everything, you know that.
