  1. Re:I'll go ahead and say it...Sandman? on NYT Magazine: Are Comics The New Mainstream Novels? · · Score: 1

I guess you didn't make it to page 8 of the article:

One solution to the drudgery of cartooning is to get others to do it for you. Companies like Marvel and D.C. essentially produce comics on an assembly line: one person thinks up the story, someone else draws it, another inks it, yet another colors it and so on. Most graphic novelists tend to be dismissive of such products, but a couple of people have emerged from the factory system and attained something like auteur status -- as writers whose comics are worth paying attention to no matter who draws them. Neil Gaiman, creator of the enormously successful ''Sandman'' series, is one such figure; another is Alan Moore, creator of ''Watchmen,'' ''From Hell'' (a story about Jack the Ripper) and ''The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.''

Why on tech related sites do I see so many people using the word 'loosing' instead of 'losing'.

They may LOSE their trademark, not LOOSE their trademark. There may be some idea that they are loosing their trademark into the wild for everyone to utilize. But that would make me think they're doing it on purpose. Losing their trademark is rather unambiguous, and they had lost their right to the trademark.

Have you listened to solid state amplifiers versus vacuum tube amplifiers? I don't know enough about music theory, or music in general. The harmonics are filtered differently. A small search on the web mentions that tube amplifiers favor even ordered harmonics(more in line with musical instruments), and solid state amps tend to favor odd ordered harmonics.

At school I saw a couple demonstrations and lectures that pointed that fact out in more detail.

  6. Re:Replacement on New Stem Cell Source - Your Bone Marrow · · Score: 4, Interesting

This is exactly the problem. The stem cells at this point are already specialized, and they essentially know how old they are. Hence the reason to use fetal stem cells that have not been programmed as to their task.

I find it strange that this is something new. My friends who are working with stem cells have known about research of this type for some time, and know the inherent weaknesses in these methods.

That broken business plan is exactly what every Slashdot user cries over. They don't want any ISP that would seemingly try and charge per usage(in bits).

So it's nice we complain when we try and utilize all our bandwidth by sharing it with neighbors(whoever) and they aren't able to support this, or we complain when they want to cap our bandwidth and make us pay for what exactly we use.. hmmm..

This is the same as using adult stem cells, correct? I believe that all the same issues that result with using stem cells from older tissue. The cells DNA essentially knows how old it is, and what it's programmed to do. Therefore this can't be a replacement for embryonic stem cell lines.

Since when has slashdot ever really been trying to be a newspaper? I don't see Slashdot being a source of the stories, just a place where news/'non-news' I might be interested in are linked to. Meta-journalism(meta- being the prefix used for search engines, not really the true meaning) if anything. I guess I'm only really replying since this post is marked at 5 for the moment, but the argument seems a little silly. This is a community for people to discuss articles linked, not a newspaper or a tabloid. So when the article is posted the community will correct the mistakes that might not be obvious at first. Don't bring journalistic integrity into this when this isn't a news source.
