    Dude.

"I just go straight to..." is obviously skipping a step. Nothing vague, no indication that I"m unaware of the step I skipped.

"you favorite OS.." carries an implication of niche, which I have emphatically denied. It is not "favorite os", it is an O/S that *was* niche, but now is *not*. I'll frame my own rhetoric, thanks.

If someone using Windows bitched about his dongle not working and he blamed the manufacturer for sell him junk, you would not be harping on him (I assert).

I AM ARGUING THAT LINUX HAS REACHED (or is reach*ing*) A PLACE WITHIN THE MARKET THAT BRINGS WITH IT THAT SAME LEVEL OF EXPECTATION. -----this is the point you can/should argue against!

    jeez, talk about poor analysis.

No kidding. Did anything in my comment imply that I do not understand this? My comment was about market forces, consumer pressure on Vendors to perform when it comes to support what I argue (in the same comment) is an operating system that is becoming more mainstream everyday. This is a trend that Linux does not share with BSD, Win95, Amiga, and the Commodore Vic20.

In other words I'm suggesting that IF it is reasonable for a consumer to expect his webcam to "just work" on WindowsXP, THEN it is BECOMING more reasonable THESE DAYS to expect the same when using a Linux Distribution.

I don't think you actually read what I posted. Scanned maybe.

My impression of Broadcom hardware is 100% based on my experience using their products on Linux, and imo Broadcom is the suck.

I've noticed that when an application or gadget doesn't work well on MS Windows, people blame the application or the gadget, not Windows. But those same people blame Linux for every application/gadgets shortcomings.

There are more Desktops running Linux everyday though and one day vendors will start to realize that when their hardware "doesn't work" on Linux *a lot* of people will see that as a reflection of their product, not the Linux Kernel.

For myself, I don't even address driver stability in conversation anymore, I just go straight to "vendor x makes crap hardware".

The pertinent question is this: is OOXML an open format?

No. I think openxml is a scam. My unverified assumption is that at present there is no translater that is 100% compatible with any document MS Office might produce with openxml, including Novells. Even if my assumptions are incorrect (I'm convinced they are not), it will still be possible for MS to "extend" openxml later with new shiny features that will effectively keep documents locked in.
I can't imagine that any intelligent human will not realize this. The only explanation for openxml approval by ECMA, ISO, or the State of Massachusetts is corruption and bribery.

That looks interesting. I couldn't find a price though. According to their FAQ a 5kw unit costs 175,000 dollars, I think the test unit should be less though since it has fewer tubes.

It's small enough that you could put it in the corner of your garage.

The website describes it as a tool for learning about fuel cells etc., but I think that would be limited by virtue of the tubes being manufactured (and sealed I assume). But it would be useful for "complete system" prototyping and experimentation.

I spent a lot of years up in Alaska on various kinds of boats. On one factory trawler we had a crew that was about 1/3 mexican, 1/3 filipino, and 1/3 everyone else (mostly U.S. ppl). One year a good portion of the crew thought it would be a good idea to make our shifts (there were 3) based on language instead of experience. Made sense at first, there were quite a few people who didn't speak English well, and it was a job where coordination was paramount. So we tried it.

After only 3 days we went back to the old shifts. The problem was the typical complaints about 2nd shift from 3rd shift had migrated to "the filipos suck", "the mexicans suck", or "the americans suck". There were fist fights.

Of note, production was down those 3 days. People felt more comfortable slacking in front of a group that was only friends.

I disagree. The author (Andy Greenberg) is assuming, or hoping for anyway, the exact opposite. In fact, that is the point of this article, to raise public awareness of how much money is being lost due to other nations not getting their copyright laws "in line". The hoped for result is more pressure on foreign governments to do something. Think of the article as "lobbying" rather than "journalism".
