Agreed - a lot of nuclear material goes to and from Groton which is still an active submarine base. The detectors help monitor the flow and in this case showed something out of the ordinary.
Carl: would it be possible to implement a system that would allow real-time and continuous review of legislation while it's being drafted? Much has been made over the past three years about legislation being available for review before voting by the House or Senate. The final draft for review usually is huge PDF that makes it near impossible for citizens, interest groups, and the media to thoroughly analysis in time.

My Dad, who spent 30 years at GE running manufacturing operations, said they'd "follow the shirt manufacturers" in determining where the next batch of cheap labor would be. That puts it in Africa and/or Haiti as the next spots to build your iWhatevers.
Seriously - When the Pentagon won't immediately say what was launched and by whom, something is going really horribly wrong somewhere West of North America.
I have not doubt that the new file system will be great, but after reading this summary, the first thought I had was that I should back-up all that Gmail before they cut it over. I've been putting it off for far too long, but I'll just have to burn a couple of days of attention to do it.
I picked up my G1 at the Galleria in Cambridge (MA). The T-Mobile Kiosk was doing a brisk business and had plenty of people on hand to demo, sell, and activate the phone.
I've noticed a lack of advertising for the G1, but I read that T-Mobile will be starting TV ads soon. I wonder how much money Google is going to contribute to the campaign.
The phone is nice and works out of the box. I used it most of the afternoon and evening on the 3G network and used a lot of battery power. I'm still working on how to conserve (use EDGE only, no GPS, no WiFi). I particularly like the syncing of contacts which is helpful.
XMPP on a desktop is just another chat protocol. But, if all the cool kids start using IM services on their phones all the time, then it's game changing. The mobile carriers loose money on SMS, but gain it on data services. The SMS aggregators are out in the cold. And every web company/service now has a potential attention getting messaging system that they can tie into what they're doing/selling.
...can they look for my car. I parked it somewhere there (I think) last night and couldn't find it after I got out of the bar. It's a VW Bug, license 5773MH
Just a guess, but it makes sense for Google to standardize on one desktop OS for everyone. Using Ubuntu as a base to build a Google-internal OS just makes sense. A number of other companies do the same thing - Cisco is a good example. It'll never see the light of day outside their offices because of the support cost.
Does this mean that GNU is Unix?

A better chance of getting a meeting is by networking. If you know someone (who knows someone) that's gotten venture funding, ask them for a reference. Most VC get there leads on new businesses from referals.
Just did a quick read of the licenses section of the FAQ. They've released the UI, Skins, and Graphics under the Creative Commons (CC) license. I guess they want to see maemo used on other platforms (assuming the license fee for the graphics is reasonable).
One way to speed up a 'freenet' would be to set up lots of nodes in the repressive regime. This could be done by using the internet cafe machines - although that would require comprising the systems somehow.
Of course, it's important to remember that a $200 computer isn't very useful unless there's an easy way to network it. Many cities recognise this and are now planning and installing WiFi networks; Boston is going to discuss plans next week

+1 on StraightTalk. Just got my daughter and wife refurbed iPhones and signed them up. Coverage is great and the plan is month-to-month.

I love the example that was given. If Google wants to buy me lunch every day, that's fine by me.

I bet there are a couple hundred smart engineers/physicists out there that would make this happen.

- Given away as part of a premium service (think Yahoo Mail Plus) much like you can get a 'free' mobile phone in the US today
- School districts can buy and distribute a system to all students instead of leasing as they do today.
- Direct sales: buy one at the airport when you drop your Thinkpad at the security check-in. They're selling iPods from vending machines, why not a notebook.
