Personally I've only been somewhat of a trek fan throughout voyager and SOME of the movies.
And the captin struck me as a DUMBASS, I mean was anyone else feeling the urge to stand up and scream "NO DONT DO THAT! " or "Why are you going to do that, starfleet would be mega pissed!!!!"(which they weren't... that baffled me a bit)
For everyone who was dissin' the softcore porn... ta hell with yas! Theres nothing that a geek like myself enjoys more than a DAMN FINE, nekked alien!:oD
This was better than most of the bull on tv this season (see love cruise), and I'll probably continue to watch it... hoping it'll get better.
Why can't we be more creative when punishing kids... I mean, he may make friends in the detention center.
Lets hear some suggestions for punishments other than imprisionment...
For example:
Be forced to clean out every grease tray from every McDonalds in the city of Montreal. (Perhaps drink whats left? maybe thats TOO harsh)
or
Computer teacher for the elderly... nonstop. Trust me, when your trying to teach a 70 year old "how to use a mouse" you feel like shooting yourself.
even better
Forbid him to use any computer thats faster than a pentium 90.
Finally. Perhaps the most durastic and painful:
Make him use Windows.
I remember exploring new mice when they first came out. I have handheld rollarball, 2 handed rollarball, the first touch panel mice for your PC (the ones that are on some laptops now).
I had 2 joystick mice, one was the regular joystick size, the other was handheld joystick, one that you operated with your thumb.
If it were open source... I'd LOVE to tinker around with something like this. Im stuggleing to get around in Linux, but am a master at windows (is there such a thing?). To have an open source windows clone would be heaven for people like me!
I LOVED getting the specialized space sets!!! I swear, I had built some of the best looking space ships ever! Of course they looked NOTHING like the things on the box, with a combanation of generic lego, and the space ship kind I could build things that would put Star Wars/Trek to shame!!!
Things that could with a simple flick of the wrist and a dead size C battery, could destroy nearly anything my sister could build!!!;oD
Palm needs to get their asses in gear, I could see developers from BE helping with a super-top-secret handheld that smokes the Ipaq out of the water. There are rumors that Ipaq will be switching to ARM processors (thank god, 22mhz is not enough!).
Perhaps this is some new zanny idea of Palms, and in a year or two, we'll be seeing something absolutly jaw dropping from them.

Its true, about girls being scared of non console games...
My ex-g/f was almost in tears when I beat the hell out of a scientist with a crowbar in halflife.... of course I was ROFLMAO, but she was nearly crying! *notice the 'ex'g/f... I wonder why?*
Something tells me, given the chance M$ would take BIG advantage of a chance like this, they'd give most of the licenses away for free, and then make it into a huge publicity stunt. I know I would if I were Big Bad Bill.
And I have seen Win2k running 32 procs clusters...
I think its great when something can be just recomiled to work on a completly diffrent hardware setup! (beat that Bill!)
I don't think Linus would be all that upset to know something he wrote is being used for projects that big.
Being 16 and having the ability to cost a company millions of dollars is so much of a power trip. We get extremly large heads, no one knows more than we do. It's just impossible. On top of that, no one can take us down, we'll never be stopped, even if the cops come to arrest us... no wait we're too good, they'll never catch us. Our parents are much to dumb to understand what we're doing.
This is the basic idea that runs through all my geek friends heads. (Including mine on occasion). I think it comes from (well mine did...) that ever so popular writing by the mentor, you know the big page long, "You can stop this individual, but you'll never stop us all". I remember when I first read that, I think I was 10 or 11, but I was so giddy, cause it does hold a partial truth. Here I was 12 or 13 all ready to hack anyone who had the nerve to piss me off (remember 'nuking' w/ Win95? those were the days...)
Now, I'm a bit more relaxed, it doesn't matter to me anymore who's a better hacker/coder/fragger, The Mentors words aren't so important anymore, and I'm focusing on my future... it's inevitable, eventually these 15 year olds will settle down... and its been my experience, sooner than 15 year olds who don't spend adolesonce in front of a CRT.
I couldn't agree more... it depends on location too. I lived in a small town, and I had a paper route. Now I work at a ISP as a 'techie' (as they call it here) and I make good money, not to mention, Im making A LOT of connections that I'll be able to use after collage, when/if I do my own start up.
The last update I heard, was that AMD already had a new PCI bus (I thought it was PCI 2.0??), and the FCC was waiting on Intel. Because Intel was getting all upset that AMD had already made the standard and they weren't going to get their $$$. This was about 3 months ago, and I don't recall were I read it or I'd post it.
I know the numbers are still the same (speed wise anyways), but what happened to AMD's new PCI? Did they even have one in the first place?
IMO, they won't listen. I posted this earlier, but its too radical of an idea...
Then again, watch them embrace it, and make me look like an ass... god hates me.
Picture this...
Your Dolby, you make millions. Something threatens to stop the income of millions. Obviously your going to want to keep your millions coming in.
"I'd just make it open source" of course you would, you'd lose millions restructuring your corperations, only to lose millions more when people finally realize that they don't need to pay for it. Your employee's lose their jobs, and your company is cut down to half its original size.
Everyone here has to realize that, yes, us geeks that understand all these things, ARE in the minority. And Joe Sixpack doesn't care less about if it was designed open source or not, he just wants it to work, and to work well. If he has to pay for something to have it work reliably, then he will.
oh god, I can feel the flames already - it feels like burning. I'll try to qwell my flambait post a bit...
I Do agree with Open Source, but these older corperations (Dolby) can't and more than likly won't turn to it... its to radical of an idea... but eventually that will change... *i hope*
Its too bad, I use SAMBA on a daily basis at work, and I've slowly been convincing managment about the benifits of Linux to Windows. So far we have 4 out of 56 boxes running Corel Linux!!
But I can see if SAMBA gets busted up, a lot of people in the same situation as mine will run into a lot more problems convincing people to run the new and mysterious 'Linux' (fav. quote from work: "Is that new? I've never even heard of a 'Linux' computer?").
This means more $$$$ for Microsoft. I mean this in the most serious way, but DONT THEY HAVE ENOUGH?
I 'steal' my DTV (Im canadian) Cause I can! The signal is there, I have the tools and the knowledge to do it, so I do it.
That should be the catch, a reward for smart people: If your smart enough to do it yourself, you can have it for free. Otherwise, pay the huge company more money that they really don't need.
All these Joe nobody's buying $300 cards from other 'pirates' is whats wrong. These pirates are reselling the service, and thats what I have a problem with.
I've looked and looked into this, as I do my own DirectTV pirating. To my knowledge, Direct TV can do nothing to canadians who get thier service (besides of course, starting a canadian wing of their company to provide canada with DTV legally.) And I have yet to hear any Canadian being busted for burning just American cards.
On the other hand, the sat. feed is intended for Americans only, and if we can pick it up, I wonder if this is some sort of violation of a CRTC law, because does DTV not OWN that feed?
Does anyone know how/where I can get my computer infected with Code red? I mean I think it'd be cool to throw my small amount of bandwidth in with the DESTRUCTION OF THE INTERNET!! (Does this sound like a really bad movie to anyone?)
Somehow I have my doubts that the internet will "cease to exist"... then again...
Okay, heres what I think we should do.
Everyone who posts on Slashdot, we are somewhat of a community right? If everyone at/. donated a mere $5-$10 MAYBE we could buy our own/. island. Start a whole new country, and make our own laws!! BWAHAHAHA *TAKE THAT EVIL CORPERATIONS*
:O\
Seriously there isn't much we as end users (most of us are right?) can do other than keep beating these companies at their own game. Eventually they'll realize they just can't win. After one file sharing program goes down, 3 more will take its place.
Someone suggested encryption earlier, that maybe a good idea. . .
Did anyone not see this coming? People were saying that Rambus was going to fail ever since it came out.
Personally I'd never buy another Intel, they're to expensive... plus AMD's preform just as good and in some cases even better! This is just IMO, I dont want to start an Intel vs. AMD war.
What bothers me the most about the mega megers, is that it doesn't seem like anyone can stop them. I mean Microsoft just seems to have beaten the US government! Can't you just see these two companies finding some way around the law (is there a law?) just to get their own way!?
I guess our only hope is a little penguin named Tux.
:)
Let me be your alien bitch.
