Heat pipes are a simple yet usefull tech. They are currently being used by a mining company in the Canadian artic to make a dam to hold back water. They needed a way to hold back water in a lake without the expense and problems of a large concrete damn, they opted to create an earth damn that used the permafrost to keep it in place. In order to keep the permafrost as permafrost they used heat pipes. The idea is to draw out any heat from the surrounding ground and lose it in the air. Its very effective due to the rather cold climate and the fact that it requires no upkeep other than simple monitoring. I did a fast search on google but I couldnt find a reference to this specific use.
It comes into play now when you buy a new super fast computer and 6 months later its starting to look a little slugish compared to the newest models... you then overclock it and it will be as good as new again. Until you have to buy a new mobo/cpu to get the newest tech that is.
Where the hell are my 3D glasses or laser eye projection systems they promised me back in the early 90's?! Its been about 10 years now... dont you think its a little over due? I figured by this time with the way tech is moving I should have 2 pair by now and be able to play Quake 3 with a buddy at the same time on the same computer while using my 3D glasses... No, instead Im using a stupid little 17inch monitor that makes my brain warm from the radiation it puts out.
Good point. What about that belt around your waist? Or for that matter, your shoe laces? I keep wondering how far they will go. How about your tooth brush? This is commonly used in jails to make shivs (sp?) out of... doesn't set off metal detectors or scanners either. The little metal bands used in some headphones could be turned into a knife easy enough. It comes down to two words, How Far?
A little laugh and it even has to do with space!;)

The thermoelectric device won't help with this issue. It is just this little disk that gets colder on one side and hotter on the other as you put electricity into it.
I figured the hot end of this could touch my case side (big heat sink!)? Of course the motherboards would have to be changed so that the chip was close to the side (top?) of the case.
Im just really tired of that damn fan noise! I already got rid of my power supply fan. I moved the supply to the bottom of my case and opened it up. And I have no case fans anymore. I just cut a few more holes into it.
Due to the problem of fitting larger heatsinks and fans (damn loud things) onto ever smaller motherboards and chips, is it not time to re-think this idea? Would it not be possible to use this new material to pump the heat from the chip to the side of your case? The side of your case could be a very large heatsink. It would require small fins and might even improve the looks somewhat. It would not get hot due to the surface area and heat dispersion. Why use a small (relative) heatsink and excesivily (sp?) loud fan to cool the chip when you already have a large heat release area? Anyway, just a thought.
You could drop somewhere between 5 to 7 bridges that happen to go over the major access points in and around Toronto
Rather easy to get a bulldozer to remove the debris. At the longest, it would only take a day to get a road cleared.

Yes, I know this is the wrong place for this. But since the so called staff doesn't seem to be interested in posting anything but the newest build of Linux, I'll post here.
This (if it goes through) will end up being another tax on EU buyers. Think about it for a sec. They fine MS 10% of its annual revenue, ok, MS just increases the cost of the software by 11%. This in effect puts the revenue back to the same level as before the fine. But puts the cost to buyer. Due to this effect, this equals a tax to the buyer of MS software.
That is why I think any one who wants the government to force Microsoft to open Windows' source code is on crack. Well, that and another reason-- if we all agree that Windows sucks *ss, then why do we want the source code so bad?
There would be one good outcome to getting the source to Windows. It would be much easier to develop something like WINE. This would allow you to use another OS but still use those few programs that require Windows.
I heard the best thing we could do to bin Laden. When they find him (if?), capture him and take him to a secret location. Now this is the main part. Do a sex change to make him a her. Put her back so she can live out her days as a repressed woman...
Since that does seem to be the problem, are they doing 2 way communication with video? If they are doing that, why not just use text messaging from the studio to the reporter? This would free up some room in the pipe.
I look forward to the time that the news corps get access to some of that modern satalite imaging and start to do real time from the sats. Even 10 meter resolution would be amazing in real time. I would love to see what the military can do now with this stuff. Or if the sats are too expensive what about those unmanned drones they have? Its all real time and the shots would be great! I've done a simple version of this with RC aircraft and a simple video camera onboard. Its really easy to do and cheap in terms of around $500 per plane. Even civilian transmitters for RC have a range of around 2 miles and it wouldnt be hard to boost this up. These planes are hard to shoot too. Trust me on this:) The Canadian military uses RC aircraft to train the anti aircraft gunners. Most of the time the planes will still fly with rather large holes in them.
For the fun of doing it. Its like baking a cake. You can go out to the store and buy one, or you can bake one yourself. Its pleasure to eat something you made with your own hands.
Actually I had that question too... just didnt put it out. I think the problem they will have is that its only got a flash card storage system. It needs a small hard drive, maybe 5-6 gigs?
I have been looking at the minidisk systems available (as an alternative to an mp3 player) and I think those minidisks would work great in something like this. They work like a re-writable CD but are much smaller and are contained in a hard case much like the old CD load trays. They write fast and the actual players/recorders are Small!! Not to mention they have a recording time of 4 hours on only a single AA battery. Thats continous recording btw. Read time is in the area of 30+ hours.
This thing is great. Have a digital camera? This takes Compact Flash cards! Need to edit those photos while out on the road? Nice colour touch screen with stylus. Since its running Linux, you can run Gimp. Need to print those photos? USB and a printer works good. Need to type up a report and the main system is down? Plug in a usb keyboard (or use adaptor) and go to town. The only thing Im a little worried about is that they dont state (or did I miss?) that it has a hard drive... just 32mb internal flash card. Although having it connected to a lan would help the storage problem. I assume, as well, that you can buy USB hard drives(?). Maybe the IBM micro drive? Those come in 1gb and larger(?) or at least a CD burner. It would have been nice if it had a firewire port, or at least 3 or 4 USB ports. Having power problems? I hear 12v car batteries last a long time:) Hook up a GPS receiver and some mapping software and you have a way to find that remote lan party location. Smaller, easier to hold than a laptop and great for that long airplane ride... Just think of what you can do with these types of things! Wireless video streaming from your own "tivo" type box? Sounds good to me!
Some peeps even use a trackball, this I never will understand.
I used to use a regular mouse and couldn't understand how anyone could use those "track ball things", until I got one to try and help out with my wrist pain (worked too!). After about 2 days of cursing it, I could finally use it like a regular mouse. After about a week of use I could play games like I did before. After 2 weeks, I play games even better than before. I absolutly love trackballs now. Best damn thing in my oppinion for playing games. No more lifting up the mouse to move it back to the pad. You can spin 360's all night long! Cleaning couldn't be easier, remove ball, swipe with finger, put back ball. I dont use the thumb ball ones, I use the ones that you use your "other" fingures on. I use the Optical MS Trackball Explorer at home and I use the Logitech Trackman Marble FX at work, which is also uses a form of Optical ball tracking instead of the stupid little rollers.
I have been telephone free for almost 8 months now. Except at work, where I have one like everyone else, but its rare that I ever use it. I do have a cell phone, but its one of those special ones that only call 911 or a service station and its in my car at all times. You might be asking, how the hell do you order pizza? I walk down to the local place and order. Its rather unique not having a phone. It has actually helped me get more personal with people. Email is good for a short blurb, but nothing beats getting out and actually talking to people face to face.
Ahh, the simple answer is always the best answer.
Logical to me...

Perhaps a smart chastity belt would be a better purchase if you're likely to be in a situation like that.
With my luck, I would get a woman wearing such device to get in bed with me (so to speak) and the damn thing would malfunction!
The exact same in fact... guess Taco doesnt read Slashdot eh?
...that adding "Now mod me down for being a troll" at the end gets about "+5, Funny" or "+3, Interesting"?
At the time of this posting, your modded as +3 Interesting... I soon expect to see you as +5 Funny if your theory holds.
Vee Eh Software or Vah Software??? Could we get their CEO to record an MP3 of the correct pronunciation?
The correct Canadian pronunciation would be:
Vee Eh? Software
