    Also, I think them getting in on this side of the H1B argument goes against their "do no evil" policy. I may not seem so microly, but macroly it hurts everyone except those 70 people they want to hire.

    I was curious about this, so I looked around a little bit. When you say the current engine is free, are you saying free as in beer, or free as in source? I saw on sourceforge that there was a specific fork done by the original authors so that they could close the source for on-going development.

    I too wonder why they couldn't just dual license the source and close up their version? It looks like there were other contributors. I'm gonna guess there is more to the story than I can see.

    It is a good analogy....

    Mcky D's is 90% the same across the states, but there are regional differences. In the NE we get lobster rolls when in season. In WI they have brats in season.

    So Linux, like Mr. Donalds, is basically the same, with just slight different toppings. You can even choose to change the toppings and make your Linux distro look like another if you want.

    Wow, nice totally inaccurate strawman. You have mixed bringing in average at best quality labour because they are cheap with keeping high quality people here in the country.

    If the people really are the best you can find, then keep em here. But that doesn't mean I have to replace my entire local workforce with average labor while pretending they are better.

    I think the people (oooo, the thought of working for people rather than a corporation) you are working for *might* actually be using H1B correctly. But from the articles for that one company there is 5 or 6 that are gaming the system.

    mmm statistics.....

    There is a bridge in DC. Some calculated the probability of a breakdown given the length of the bridge, amount of traffic, number of overall breakdowns, etc.... It was like .00001% probablility. And yet, there was a backup and tow truck out there (almost) daily because of the volume..

    So it may sound statistically small, but it is still possible given how man 360s have shipped.

    Two points: One, we don't have to give away our competitive advantages just for a short term financial gain. This *will* bite us in the end. Two, you all are forgetting about level playing field. You idea of going free trade works, if and only if, you convince *all* of our trading partners to also go the free trade route. Otherwise, again, we are just giving it away...

    I'm not an economist, but I at least am informed enough to look deeper into the subject than reading Ann Rand novels.

    Dude, the school you went to certainly does matter. I work at a place that doesn't even consider 2nd tier schools in recruiting. People I know who went to a more well know school than I did have an easier time getting around.

    As a side note, social networking is what you should be working on. Leverage you OSS work, friends, school mates, anyone you can think about. That's what the ivy's are really about, knowing people who can help each other.

    Ok, don't go for the gold right out of the box. Find a smaller/lesser know OSS project to work on. Ideally, find something you are interested in or are already using. Maybe you have something about an OSS project that bugs you... Try to go in and make it work like you want.

    Also, be patient. Unlike the parent, talk to the maintainer before making dangerous changes.

    Final note, Linux kernel list is notorious for ignoring patches... That's why it's good to read the mailing lists etc before trying to submit. Get a feel for the project.

    Actually I think this is going to become an issue with xbox-live (if it isn't already) with the new thing where you can create games and put them onto live. If MS finds a way to make more money than the original author on the games, how will that go over? Or if MS (or someone else) maybe releases the games on a disc.

    Also, the point about CDDB isn't about what they can do with the data, it's about bait-and-switch. Asking people to contribute and then changing the rules after they have.

    2 points.

    1) Developer-to-Developer. MS has made a point to sell to developers so this isn't surprising. Try this level of support with a Visio end-user problem. Does he get this great support at 2AM when his production server has gone down and he needs a patch ASAP?

    2) Well, two points...
        2a) Why isn't he going thru MS support? If they are so great, regular support should be faster and more reliable.
        2b) Sounds like the support you would do for FOSS. Look thru the boards, blogs and online stuff then communicate directly with the developers.

    I still don't see this as something happening... Ok... Maybe Earthlink has 512K lines, and sells you only 256K of those lines... Then Apple comes along and offers to pay for extra above the 256K part of the line. Technically it's legitimate, but I'd call it dodgy.

    Your argument about Earthlink's customers is only true IF they know about it.

    Besides, a net neutrality law wouldn't be cast in stone, never to be changed. It often comes to how it's enforced and how it's modified over time... I guess the need all comes down to how much you trust publicly traded companies like ... <your favorite ISP here>

    Sunny Days, sweeping the clouds away, something something something, Sesame Street... Wow, stopping viruses and spam! I guess if Outlook traffic were filter out, that would help with both of those... Hmmm...

    I think all the people posting these "It's going to blot out the sun if we try to enforce net neutrality" need to look at the posts about the ISPs wanting to charge extra for traffic.

    What you should be considering, and working on, is whether this is the correct legislation or just a knee-jerk reaction.

    Nice taking the issue and reversing it into a touchy feely they only want to help us argument. More likely scenario... Apple goes to Earthlink and offers .01c per Kb to give them priority for iTV over youtube.com traffic. Or it's even Earthlink shopping around... will you pay us x extra per Kb to ensure your traffic doesn't drop into lower priority on the stack.

    Just an FYI. I suspect that this device gets set to a *single* maximum speed. So if the parents decide the kid can't go over 45 (keep em off the highways), then that kid can go 44 MPH everywhere...

    This kind of device is really just a pacifier for the parents... So they can feel better if something bad happens... "But we set Johnnies max speed to 45!"

    I think the more troublesome bit of the article is the small/medium size company bit. I think they have more to fear than the OSS people. If you accidently invest everything in something a patent troll has, you are screwed. With OSS, you can just drop that bit, or shift around the patent... no big deal.

    I also can't believe that this isn't considered "obvious" and non-patentable. I mean geez.. You have OO and you have relational... you're going to want to map between the two... Is FSF jumping into this as a case to kill this kind of patent trolling?

    Wow, what amazing FUD you put out.... For all the Americans with this opinion, you best of all should know that freedom comes with costs. If you want to be made at anyone, be made at the vendors for *needlessly* creating binary only drivers. You always have to remember, without GPL, linux would not exist as it exists today. And once you start letting this slide, or that slide you end up with lots of vendor specific segmentation. And we have all see what that causes.

    The truth of the matter is in the last paragraph of the article.... Davie Bowie hasn't put out anything worthwhile in years, but people are still willing to pay to hear his old hits.

    So this is really about sour grapes on his part because people don't like his new stuff, they only want the old stuff. He just wants to blame P2P for his lost abilities.

    Don't forget that you have to pay to get patches for Xbox games, which ironically need patches... My PS/2 doesn't crash nearly like my Xbox (as in almost never).. Stupid Xbox thing...
