Seamus Blackley had to say about the Xbox, they wouldn't have been so quick to brand it a PC
FYI, Seamus was the Xbox lead...
I personally saw the XBox as MS's attempt to turn a PC into a console in a money grab attempt against Sonys market share.
XBox 360 is just another typical MS upgrade to force people to buy all new games. I'm personally buying up all the Xbox games I might want to play before they disappear (And my Xbox is only 1 year old.... bah...).
When I bought my PS/2 it had great backward compatability and was a cheap DVD player. I hope (but doubt) that Sony makes PS/3 able to play PS/2 games.... Shouldn't be that hard with all the power built into it.
But you assume there is competition between companies. For example. Where I live I can only get comcast. I can't even get DSL. And it really looks like the communication companies want to band together and set a pricing scheme.
If you are lucky enough to live in a big enough market you might see some competition. But the majority of us, especially people not living in large markets, aren't going to see any competition.
Now so that you can moderate me down, I'm going to posit that internet service (the pipe) should really be considered an utility and should highly regulated to provide maximum access at affordable rates to everyone (again, not just people in large markets).
I see little reason in my heart not to believe most libertarians are simply evil and want to be slave owners
Most people don't think of libertarians as evil, but as naive. If you can get everyone to participate in the libertarian ideal then everything is good. But in our society there are just too many people who want to take advantage of (some, not all) libertarian principals to the detriment of others. (ie Rich people are happy to eliminate government.... but only those things that only help poor people. They still want the government around for those things that help the rich.
when did socialism and democracy become incompatable? I think you meant to say "I hear socialist grass is greener than *capitalist* grass.
And for 95% of the country, it could be... We're just too afraid to make any small changes because they of course will result in the worst possible outcome and will take over and consume the entire country and we will all be living in the poor house our bodies providing fuel for the furnaces on the academic elite who feast on the fruits of our labors.
If I find any bugs/issue numbers in code I have to work with the first thing I do is delete them. This sort of thing drives me nuts and makes me want to poke out peoples eyes with a sharp stick while chanting "Use CVS diff, Use CVS diff".
Java has never been of interest to me because of the speed.
You mean java has too much speed for you? If not, nice troll...

Could it be that most things refered to here are tools? Where is the XYZ PnP software written in Java? I think that may be the reason for the perception of lack of OOJS.
Nah, his argument is based on this: If you buy a supported/stable Redhat version (which you are buying because it is stable) and you want to change it, then you need to work with Redhat to keep it stable (Therefore all open source isn't really open source (sorry, had to do the math for you here)).
His argument is based on Redhat's requirements for keeping your system supportable. I believe this is a perfectly legitimate concept to expect.
What he doesn't say is that if you aren't expecting a Redhat guarentee then there is absolutely no issue with making changes. Redhat won't charge you a cent as long as you don't expect them to ensure stability.
I did a quick check... The front page www.foxnews.com does not include this as a story (unless it's in a non-obvious spot). The url given to./ is a direct link to the story.
Was it a front page story earlier today for a short while?
Why isn't anyone following the money? If they can convince everyone that they are being hurt (let's say 5c per blank CD sold worth), then they get the the government to put a tariff on CDs, which would go straight into the RIAA companies bank accounts.
Quite Simply because the libertarians of today forget than Ann Rand was assuming that all people in the society are super-human. Assumes that they will make the best choices based on informed decisions that ultimately benefit everyone. They forget that we are all really more in the sub to barely-human range making decisions for all the wrong reasons.
Dude, you're living in fantasy land. And so is the leadership in the current US administration. And they want to move the rest of the US there. Except most of us will end up in the lower caste, and chauffers and such.
If I could afford a bunch of domestic help and eating out every night, just by giving up electronic gadgets; I certainly would. But I don't think I spend nearly as much on gadgets as I would hiring just one domestic worker (Even using illegal Mexican labor).
Safety regulations help people out, even in the IT sector, much more than you expect.
There are very few labor unions here in the US for the IT sector, and most of our jobs are currently at the whim of the employer. Look at how many companies are improving their bottom lines by cutting domestic workers.
Also, please look at a survey of US IT works. I would bet the average hours worked in 10-12 hours per day. The guys who work with/for us in India don't work any more than the people here.
United just got a Judge to allow them to drop their retirement benefits (that people had already earned (as part of their wage structure)), so all these people are out. I'm saving for my old pension for the same reason as you, because I don't expect social security.
Your last point about it being because it costs more here is the main issue. Either we can drop our standards, which helps everyone (including the people you would consider chattle) and develop a caste system.. Or we maintain a decent living for everyone at a higher cost. I personally hope we can continue down the later path, because it's what has made the US the super power it is.
Where the heck do you live? $30 for a 4-Mbit connection? I pay $50 for a lot slower than that connection. The only time I see any improvement is when someone else threatens to enter the market. Then I see a magic slight bump up in speed.. enough to kill the competition.
I also don't think that every expects it for free, more of at a reasonable cost.
One last also, I don't think that my local cable company is using anything near what current technology would allow... Seems they put in their cables a few years ago and are calling it good enough.. no need to upgrade since there isn't any competition. Where the hell is my hi-speed fiber connection to my house?
I'd love to have a not-for-profit cable wire utility. Someone to provide the dark cabling to everyone. Let the companies compete for selling you stuff over the wire. Cable can sell be cable, anyone can sell be internet access, etc. I believe this is the model that the power grid is on, and where it's correctly regulated (vs de-regulated) it works great.
Just like guys in prison have the right to file as many lawsuits, court briefs, appeals, whatever... They have the right, it's just really really annoying and distorts the system.
Your first paragraph is fantasy, the second paragraph is reality. You fantasize that under you "Fair Tax" system that there would be now loop holes... hahahhhdhhehehhahhehhehehehhahhh lmao rotflmao.... I can bet the loop holes would be written is as riders on the first piece that would get signed.

I hate using make. Ant is so much easier to use.
Oh yeh, don't feed the Pyton zealots either.
I read thru some of Ou's other blogs, and I have to say he seems to be a MS Troll.
Well doesn't federal law apply to the states also?

It's instant free money!
I hear the multi-player version is based on the Unreal Engine and requires the latest nVidia graphics card (The "over-clocked" version) to run.

Ummm, free as in available to anyone who wants it, not free gratis... Free Speak vs. Free Beer
It has the added benefit of reducing complexity in your code... I can tell my manager "I removed 500 lines from this file when I fixed it"
VS the America the beautiful (and Europe sucks) rants?

Guys, how do you feel about all the people on slashdot who have no life, and are answering all of the questions for you?
Sadly there are a lot of hardworking welfare cases in the mid-west.... It's become hard to make a family farm work these days...
