Or prions (as in mad cow disease), which some people consider to be "self replicating protiens". But they are really just a twisted form of a protien, and all they do is cause other normal protiens to twist.
It's interesting, and may have implications as to how simple chain reactions (such as fire or crystalization) could have gradually turned into what we consider life. But still....don't make it out to be more that it really is.
Hell they might as well consider the raw material to be "robots that are powered off", and then have the bots push the power button on the "raw material" to create a new robot.
Its pretty simple, but I'll bet you'll find you use Web Developer a lot less after using aardvark.
(and yes, I wrote it, but its been very popular on del.icio.us and 60,000 people have downloaded it in the last week, so I'm not the only one who's into it)
Back in 97 or 98, when the Microsoft trial was in full swing, Slate had the best (and funniest) daily reports from the trial. It made microsoft and their lawyers look like utter fools.
Very true. Personally I find the attitude of the blog writer pretty offensive and arrogant. "You can't have any of my stuff if you aren't in my elite club of Linux users". Makes me not want to be in the club.
Microsoft wants us to believe that applications should run only on one platform, and that porting should be difficult. That's why they were threatened by netscape and java, which could allow the OS to make less of a difference. They want us to believe we don't have a choice -- if we want our apps, we must use their OS.
The open source world is foolish to try to play this game. Not only is it evil, but we're at a huge disadvantage. Open source should be about openness, and restricting platforms doesn't strike me as very open.
....allowed you to sort by "who" (i.e., the other party, not just sender or recipient), and allowed you to filter outgoing messages and put them in the appropriate folder based on the recipient.
Sure, you could sneak a cell phone in, but you can also sneak a camera in. The point of using a cell phone rather than a camera is that the cell phone appears innocuous.
You are of course right that jamming them won't work.
You have to go well beyond geosynchronous orbit, which is like 23 thousand miles high. I would have guessed twice that for the counterweight, but maybe even further as they say.
without having to keep their stuff as purely kid-friendly and cutesy as Disney requires. The Incredibles was a step in the more-adult direction, but without Disney, they could do whatever their creative minds come up with, even if it is far edgier than a Disney cartoon.
Of course, I speak as an adult fan of their work, not as a stockholder, nor as a 5 year old hoping for stuff my prudish parents will take me to.
According to his article he is looking for someone with a clue what it might be. Maybe its something weird his doctors haven't heard of, but if enough people look, someone will have seen it and provide a reference.
I think you should change "instant runoff voting" to "ranked choice voting", which is a more general term that applies not only to IRV but to the much superior Condorcet methods. True IRV is a very flawed system.
Well, at least here in crazy San Francisco (which, beleive it or not, has some Aunt Minnies of its own, some of which aren't married to Aunt Sally) they have already implemented ranked choice voting for local offices. So its happening, albeit slowly. Certainly election reform would have to happen on the local level first before dealing with the US presidential election.
I suspect that the Aunt Minnies would just need a little education.
of plurality elections. 3rd party candidates are severely disadvantaged, and having them present introduces all kinds of bad things. Its not impossible for them to win, just very difficult, and more likely they will just swing the election against the causes they represent.

This can all be avoided by systems which rank candidates, or use other mechanisms to avoid the vote splitting/spoiler effect/ strategic voting etc which causes our polarlized system where two parties dominate.
True, but it was because of a third party candidate that GWB is in office today. Unfortunately, Nader didn't offer to answer questions on/. , if he did I'd ask the same question of him.

Lame.
And slashdot users have every right to point it out on slashdot's dime.
Have you tried Aardvark for web development? http://karmatics.com/aardvark

once an issue comes out, if they don't fix it immediately, and then we patch our systems immediately, we're in trouble.
I don't get that. Linus may be smart, but that just seems dumb if some time can be bought.
dupe checker for slashdot
they don't insist that we say TEE SEE PEE SLASH EYE PEE

Not that it matters. Just curious.

Bummer.
Because cell phones appear to be just a cell phone, and that the person has another reason for having it other than taking pictures.

"More adult" doesn't necessarily mean "more photorealistic". Pixar seems smart enough to, among other things, stay out of the "uncanny valley".

For kids? Are you serious?
I was completely convinced it was for those who took a few bong hits in the parking lot.
That's why he mentioned ratio...you get a better ratio if you have better upload speed.

Then they raise the max. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

The electoral college is not the main problem which eliminates 3rd parties, it is plurality voting. See (and mod up!) this post
