In most cultures, it's not acceptable to dress up an eight year old in a top that says "porn star", for understandable reasons.

I could actually imagine that happening here... in Germany.

Translated to German it means Porno Star. Yeah, that would be hard to figure.

Although true, I don't see how banning a game is going to prevent future violence. You can't apply that "logic" to other areas:

    1) Pretty females can have a stimulating effect on sex offenders (known and unknown), so will you ban women from walking in public?

    2) Good tasting food can have a stimulating effect on people with eating disorders, so will you ban good tasting food?

How about doing something constructive and helping people recognize problems in their kids, providing free help to families with issues, and promiting good family relationships, instead? :P Your counter-logic fails because it ignores "desensitise unstable characters".

Dr. William Gray, hurricane researcher out of Colorado State University, has suggested that his funding may have been cut due to his unwillingness to accept the common view of anthropogenic global warming, which he calls "grossly exaggerated." He suggests in the same interview that many of his colleagues who have been around for a long time have similar feelings and experiences.

Just another contrarian viewpoint because he's too stuck to see it? Or someone whose experience provides the nuances required to see that global warming is a house of cards? Dr. William Gray is a 75 year old retired professor who wants public funding for waiting a couple of years to see if Global Warming turns out to be a dud like he says it will. And you are surprized he doesn't get the money?

BTW, his predictions on the 2006 Atlantic Hurricane Season quoted in your article were wrong.

Indeed, your example proves my point there; the cotton gin was invented without the benefit of a good patent system!

I think as long as people have enough resources and free time, innovation will occur just because some people like to innovate.

Or things get stuck at a low level, because an improvement doesn't mean any more money for those who could develop something new. Or the new development is kept a secret, using violence to keep it that way.

However, predictably the trendy Ipod has a large following with many of its followers/sheep/hipster wannabe users instantly bashing Microsoft for attempting to provide some competition/innovative features against the Ipod and even attempting to challenge a device you have already voted for with your wallet. HOW DARE MICROSOFT? And bravo to you for coming to the rescue of the Ipod so eagerly. As if you needed something more than the informed masses and every second person on the subway wearing white headphones to justify your undying, unconditional love for it. Keep on keepin' on sharpshooter. And I'm sorry to tell you that you are wrong on several accounts. The quality of the Zune is up to debates, the sales are slow. This article doesn't even mention quality, and the only thing it says about marketshare is that one market research firm says it "took second place in the portable digital player market in its first four days of sales [...] with 9 percent of the market behind the iPods". Last time I checked the iPods had around 75% market share. Even if it had dropped to 50% (given that Sandisk's hasn't changed much that's bloody unlikely), it would still outsell the brand-new Zune 5 times over. You wanne-be-hipsters buying brown Zunes or the new "you're not cool if you still buy an iPod"-Sandisk simply don't get it, nobody wants to be told by you what is the new cool.
