    Let's make sure the criminals have all the rights and the rest of us just sit back and take it in the ass.

    I know you right-wingers won't believe this, but there is actually a middle ground. When the penalty for a crime is relative to the severity of the crime, you have a pretty good system. Shooting people for stealing went out of style a couple centuries back. The Republican party will catch up to modern times any day now.

    Maybe where you're from. Here in the USA, corporations pretty much have the right to do whatever they want whenever they want and you must be some kind of communist to suggest otherwise. Don't you realize there are profits being lost?

    If you don't notice the $20, why not sign up for a payroll deduction into a 401(k) or some sort of interest-bearing account? You'll still end up with the ~ $1,000 PLUS interest instead of giving Uncle Sugar an interest-free loan for a year.

    I had the exact opposite experience. Turbotax worked just fine for me. Intuit became a gang of boneheads last year so I tried TaxCut. TaxCut also worked fine for me and H&R Block has little history of boneheadedness. I'll stick with TaxCut - who knows what the PHBs at Intuit are planning next time around.

    Having run an opt in mailing list for a previous employer I can tell you that some people sign up...

    Of course, you ARE confirming those "opt-ins" aren't you?
    If you haven't, I'll let you in on a little secret: Many people have been busily "opting-in" email addresses of various state's Attorney's General.
    The Can-Spam Act takes effect shortly. Have a nice year.

    It's as if it's impossible to leapfrog in technology without the political motivation of an enemy to mobilize it.

    The US would never have traveled to the moon without the fear that the Soviets would beat us driving the technology. Muslims and homosexuals are the only boogeymen left to scare the populace with and it's hard to see how either require huge advances in technology to beat them.

    If you are training the new blood to be a programmer, their programming skills are a complete crap shoot.

    No, they're not. If you've got a well-designed code based and are willing to spend a few weeks upfront training them in how to use the API, then anyone with the willingness to learn and communicate can be trained to be a good programmer. It's the people who think that the data layer is too poorly written for them to bother with that cause all my headaches.

    Bzzzt!! you guessed wrong. I supervise a team of engineers creating J2EE-based apps at a major, well-known online shopping site. Want to move on to Double Jeopardy now?

    The bottom-line is that a pain-in-the-ass, prima donna programmer costs more than he/she makes in re-work, duplicated efforts and morale-crushing complaining about how all the other programmers aren't nearly good enough to breathe the same air.

    Actually, let me back it up a little and not be so terribly insulting.

    ...These people will be shed, but it will be a painful process.

    As a supervisor I have always preferred the unskilled but eager over the self-important assholes. The unskilled can be taught but have you ever tried to get a know-it-all jerk to be a part of the team? Impossible.

    Canada looks like a nice alternative to the USA. Better health care, low crime rates, civilized acceptance of diverse peoples. Personally, I am gathering as much data on my emigration options as possible. I've decided that if President Flightsuit is re-elected, I'm going to try to find another home. Unfortunately, it appears as if getting work as an alien is as difficult in other countries as it is in the USA.

    My solution to the problem of too many bills was to quit buying so much crap. Once you quit letting the marketing department run your life, you'll be surprised how many other problems are also resolved.
