I implemented one of the Zeroconf internet drafts on Linux for a class project. It can be found here. It is in no way a complete implementation, but got me an 'A' grade:)
So tell me about womens rights in India? India has had a woman Prime Minister. How many "western" nations can boast of it? 'nuff said.
Can you tell me about the Indian-occupation of Kashmir? Go back and read your history and go throught the DOJ website. Even the US of A has admitted that Pakistan has been the aggressor in each account.
Can you tell me about human rights abuses in India? Sure there are human rights abuses which is sad. Now let talk about cases like Rodney King here in the USA. Also, tell me why the USA is seeking immunity for U.S. peacekeepers from falling under the jurisdiction of war crimes court in a particular country? Human rights abuse HAPPENS. Its war!
Can you tell me about the poverty? I will concede that the poverty still afflicts human life. But Indian needs to explore new avenues to generate revenue, since obviously a "poor" country cannot tax its citizens, right?
Can you tell me about the backwards caste system which allows higher classes to abuse the lower classes? This can only be mended thru education (of the so-called lower classes), so that they know their rights.
And finally, can you tell me why a nation like this should be focusing on going to the moon? This is like saying that if you haven't perfected one thing, you have no right to try something else. India needs new ways to earn money. IT has been a resounding success which has created a new middle class with the power to buy. This attempt at the moon will help it in another industry, launching satellites at a fraction of the cost that we "western" countries charge others so that we can protect our interests.
Why does it have to come down to a distro war? I use Redhat, i am comfortable with it but i am truthful enuff to admit that dependencies are still a problem with it, especially with library versioning.
Besides I really donot have the time nor CPU cycles to compile a whole distrbution such as Gentoo at office (though i do use it at home).
You have to understand that I am bored of tinkering around. Some things should just work now. I would like to move on to newer problems like configuring anti-aliasing rather than remaining stuck up with still trying to configure X.
I have used Linux for over 6 years now, from the Slackware days of kernel 1.2.13. Over the years, the installation and configuration of hardware, X, desktop etc. has become easier. But package handling is still not perfect due to failed dependencies.
Although I can always figure out what the problem is sometimes I just wish that somebody would take that burden upon himself/herself to make my life easier.
Ximian installs are good since I just need to select the packages and I am ready to go, though it has failed me sometimes.
He mentions how snappy Windows NT is even on a Pentium 90 box. No way that Gnome or KDE, which are the closest we have to a integrated desktop environment, can ever beat that.
snip... Your choice of OS includes FreeBSD 4.x-STABLE, Debian GNU/Linux, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and RedHat Linux. Windows 2000 and NT 4.0 can be accomodated, although we generally encourage UNIX for reliability, security, and remote management. We also encourage customers to use open source software whenever possible, as security patches, support, and overall quality are often the highest, although we also recognize that for most customers, the best choice is whatever system their staff is most familiar maintaining.
Sooo... spamming is okay if the spammer is poor enough?
In a way, yes. (and I am surprised at myself for saying this)
Here are a few examples:
- Where does most of the toxic dump from the US go? No prizes for the right answer
- Where do most of the software maintenance contracts and other stuff that nobody here wants to do go to: India, China, Russia.
Why? There is only two reasons: cost and laws.
But I think it comes back to bite us sooner or later if the anti-dumping measures by China and call by American workers to stop H1-B visas is any sign.
In the same vein I think the websites for whom the spammers do this dirty work should be made accountable first. Make then pay for every dollar that they taunt these spam server admins with. Attack the roots of the problem; not just a branch.
And I DONOT endorse spam in anyway. Hell it is a Royal PITA.
I think its not fair to blame Asia for spam. A lot of spam that I get are for European and American sex sites. Aren't they to blame too? For resorting to spam in the first place and since their own laws are strict, they hire someone else to do the dirty work for them because the poor guy needs the money.
I think they are the main culprits here.
The problem can be restated as "Linux does not allow locally deliverable packets to go outside the machine." This is because of the IP layer code which detects the local destination and short-circuits the path of the packet.
I am currently working on a patch to enable this to happen, but I dont see this getting ready soon enough for your needs. If you are constrained for time, you might want to look at the kernel, espcially the ip_output(), ip_route_output() and corresponding routines.
Does some other OS really implement this? Would be interesting to see what then do at the IP layer.
some LEO on the witness stand under oath swearing that he knows of his own knowledge the conditions the video was taken under and that he knows that the video has not been subject to any form of digital manipulation.
Who did you say would swear that the video was not manipulated? The Eyewitness? I am not too familiar with legal terms:)
I guess this kind of advances in technology will make video evidence inadmissible in the courts. Afterall, with sufficient CPU power, anybody could make anybody talk about anything!
This will also mean that the court system will then ask for eyewitnesses since videos will not be admissible. I'm not sure whether this is good or bad.
You might be right about Jikes not optimizing the code.
My point is only to show the amount of research, money & men that IBM has devoted to Java. Can it just allow Java to be trampled by C#? NO WAY!
And with Sun having problems on the Server side as well as software services, who better to take care of Java, than IBM?
Maybe buying Sun is too far fetched, but controlling Java isnt, is it?
Its interesting to see the existence of Java being linked to IBM more than Sun these days.
What with IBM having the fastest java compiler Jikes, a Java-base development environment VisualAge, some stellar java development at DeveloperWorks, and talks of IBM acquiring Sun
This idea is trying to disprove one of the basic laws of economics:
If there is a demand for something,
someone WILL supply it, no matter what!
Maybe not you, but there are lots of other underpriviledged/poor/jobless programmers
who would be willing to do this for money. Why do you think industries like child porn, porn, drugs, mafia exist!
There will always be people who will not agree to be part of this union, and your employers will then hire them.
Remember: There will always be rebels, no matter what!
Lets first take into consideration who is being targetted. It is someone who lives in urban areas, has a computer & internet connection. You cannot take into consideration the whole population of India because you have to take into account the reach of the internet, and doing so would also falsely skew the average salary.
The average salary for these 'urbaners' is about Rs.10,000.
A CD costs about Rs.250 with about 10-15 songs. Hence, an average of Rs. 25 per song.
As the article mentions, you might only want some of these songs, say 8. Hence, 8 * 25 = Rs.200
Now Rs. 10 per song is definitely a steal by any standards!
Not to mention getting rid of those unwanted songs:)
And it will work?
LOL ! Thanks for the suggestion :)

The mantra is: Optimize for the common case

There are many countries that wont mind doing this business if they get paid in dollars which goes a long way in their countries.

He's gonna get busy preparing to nuke an asteroid u know.

Yes! But the ultimate sport would be "How long can you site withstand /.ing?"
Doesnt this need to get modded up ? :-o
