don't hold your breath. Our legal system is unbelievably slow and unwieldy, getting an injunction issued before October 25th is not going to happen no matter how anti-competitive Windows XP is. If there is an injunction issued in time, Microsoft will ask for a temporary lift on that injunction so that it can appeal it and the lift will be approved, leaving them free to begin shipping XP which will make any further attempts to stop XPs anti-competive features moot.
Yes, eventually Microsoft will lose several cases and exhaust all appeals, but I firmly believe that by the time the first case is finally over I (17 year old high school Senior) will be out of college and possibly even a husband/father. The Open-Source and Free Software community can not sit arround hoping for the courts to "kill" Microsoft. Instead, Microsoft must be "killed" by the production of incredible Free Software that totally blow any proprietory products out of the game. There is no reason why this cannot be done, after all Open-Source projects have the advantage of having MANY more developers than any company can hope for. If more developer put forth a serious effort to better existing projects those projects could easily outshine any proprietory competitors.
The main problem with most Open-Source software is it is always playing catch-up to proprietory software. Open-Source developers need to design original and innovative features as well as incorporate existing features. A great start would be Linux Only games, but not just any games, incredible FPSs, RPGs, and Racing Games. Trust me on this, make a great word processor and Joe Sixpack won't give a flying fuck, make an advanced and extremely gory FPS thats only available on Linux, and Joe Sixpack will have the newest copy of Redhat (or any other Distro) with 2 hours of the announcement.
In conclusion, the fall of MS will only be brought about by the development of great, solid, and innovative Free Software (especially in the entertainment areas), not by the courts.
Personally if I found a security bug I'd do this......
1. If it was free software I would make a patch for it, then mail the patch and a full description of the problem to the makers of the product and several other security minded websites so that people would know that they had a problem and have the patch to fix it.
2. If it was closed source propriatory software I would give the company a 5 day head start (even if it was MS) by telling them privately first, then if they hadn't posted a patch yet (which IMO would be irresponsible or inept of them) I would post full details of the problem (and if it was MS maybe even code to exploit it) to force the company to move it's ass and distribute a patch.
Would I keep it a secret? NO. Why not? Simply because if I did, anyone else who came acrossed it could use it to their own advantage and hurt others. Why would I not simply inform the creator of proprietory software of the flaw and no pubicly post it afterwards? Because they can't be trusted. (not period) I have a feeling that they would simply ignore the problem until the average person became aware of it simply because they wouldn't want to waste the money correcting something that isn't well know. They would wait for the next BIG update to fix it which would leave the people ignorant of the problem vulnerable. By giving them 5 days I give them a chance to do the right thing with no pressure, then I release it to twist their arm into doing the right thing, if they can't figure out how to fix it.....tough shit they should've made it open if they can't handle their own software. If they release a patch before 5 days will I still release info and (possibly) code to exploit it? YES!!! Why? Because it is a sad fact that people will not install the patch until it is well known that they need it (take code red for example). By releasing an exploit sure I open the people who haven't patched yet up to abuse, but I also make the problem more known and force lazy sysadmins to get off their asses and get patched, in the end everyone is patched (except the stupid) and less damage has been done than would have before.
My philosophy is "If I can find it, others can find it" and I feel that letting the few people that find it run rampant with it is irresponsible and will cause more damge than bringing attention to the problem which may possibly let a few script kiddies do a small amount of damage rather than let an expert use an unknown method to safely exploit others for years.
Bottom Line? Security through Obscurity is ridiculous and does not work.
the only thing any license could do to protect you would be to make you not legally responsible for the damages he causes, which the GPL does not do, but is easily accomplished by a disclaimer saying you are not responsible for how your code is used by others and states that any one who uses your code accepts full responisbility for the results (at least I think thats how it works). Your desire to open source your code is great (IMO), but (and I'm going to get flamed here for this) if you feel very strongly that if someone who makes modifications to your code that cause harm, it makes you morally (not legally which can be taken care of) responsible for the harm they cause I would regretfully reccomend you do not open your code, as open code will be used (which is the point)and somebody may end up making harmful modifications to your code. I do not believe such a case would make you morally responsible for any disater that occurred from a persons misuse of your code, IMO it's like a carpenter putting a "Free" sign on an old hammer and putting it outside, if someone takes that and uses it to beat someone to death or accidently drops it on someones head...it is not your fault but everyone has different morals and yours may be stricter than mine.
So in conclusion, I think it is great to open your code, and as long as you put in a proper disclaimer it's legally safe, but if you wouldn't be able to emotionally handle some idiot messing up on modifying your code (even though IMO it's not your fault) then using it for a critical application and causing damage, you probably shouldn't do it. A side note is hopefully any program in which mistakes may cost lives would be rigorously tested before being put into use.
I'm not a doctor and I'm pretty new on Slashdot so I guess I didn't know that. Would've helped if the author of the article had put it in Caps like you did and like most people do when referring to a recognized condition. Now as punishment I'll simply have to live with the same of making an ass of myself (pretty common actually) and the massive loss of Karma I expect is coming:)
Sorry, the fact that repetitive stress injuries could easily be taken to mean, emotional damages from repeated instances of high stress deadlines makes it harder to interpret. If it was entered as Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI) it would have been a little easier to interpret. I also would think they would have made mention of CTS somewhere in there. Not to mention, most lawsuits today are so ridiculous I automatically assume the worst. If this women seriously has physical limitations that prevent her from typing then I apologize and as I said above, employers should help out someone with physical disablities who can't type. I would take all my posts down if Slashdot allowed it.
the article should have been more specific, if the woman had physical limitations it should have stated it more clearly. If they're talking abou CTS then she should have gotten the VRS. "Repetitive stress injury" is pretty confusing when repetitive stress in a reporting job could easily mean having to type articles on time often, and emotional problems are often referred to as "injuries", when there was no mention of CTS I simply assumed that they meant emotional injuries. My mistake if they meant physical.
I would have complete sympathy for someone who couldn't type because of PHYSICAL limitations, I think most people would. I have no sympathy for someone who can't type because of "stress". This woman did not suffer nerve damage, she suffered StupidLazyitus and decided the world should cater to her laziness. I know that if a programmer had his fingers cut off in an accident most employers would understand and get the VRS and most courts would award him the victory if he ended up getting fired for not being able to do his job. But if I was the boss and someone claimed not to be able to type for emotional reasons, I'd say "You have three days to either purchase and install your own VRS, get 'cured' by a psychiatrist or clean out your desk and get the hell out". It's nott hat we don't have sympathy for the disable, we just have no sympathy for pathetic whiners claiming BS disablities and thus undermining the real disabled people.
Or you waste large amounts of company money just because someone makes a ridiculous claim. I'm sorry but if you are so "stressed" that you can't type, someone should be kind and beat your whining ass with a hammer. A person who can become so overwhelmed by stress that they can't type, was obviously unstable to begin with. If she lost her fingers in an accident.....sure get the Voice Recognition Software for her, if she's so "stressed" she can't type for long periods of time....get her the Pink Slip. My typing skills are horrible, why? because my fingers are to big to be placed in the proper spots on a normal keyboard, thats a real excuse for not being able to type fast (not for not being able to type for long periods of time though) but I wouldn't expect my boss to pay for VRS or a special keyboard. If I want these things I'll pay for and install them, not expect the company to. I do feel that VRS is great and should be more widely used, but in the end companies shouldn't be forced to buy it simply because of a whiny employee, she should go find employment where there is VRS if she wants it, not sue her employer by claiming a ridiculous disablity. It is my opinion that somewhere in life she got the idea tat she deserved having her every whim granted and when she decided she didn't want to type anymore (come on stress?) she expected her company to foot the bill. When they didn't she decided to show them by not doing her work, claiming disablity, and when she got fired for not doing her work (how dare they) she decided to sue. I'm sorry for going on a rant but I hate seeing bullshit cases like get attention, she should've been laughed out of the courtroom already.
You are disabled if you have no fingers to type with......not if "stress" has rendered you "unable" to type. This is just a type W case (Whiner), if this woman can not type because she is "stressed" she should see a psychiatrist (or come to me and for ten dollars I beat her with a hammer for an hour and a half). Being unable to type or write IS a disablity, and you should be able to sue your employer if, let's say, something at work falls on you and shatters your hands, preventing you from typing, and then they fire you because you can't do your job. Just because some woman doesn't want to work anymore and has decided that she won't (oops I mean "can't") type doesn't mean she should be able to sue her employer when they fire her for not being "able" to work. This is like me claiming I'm to stressed to lift boxes at one my summer jobs (where I lift boxes....yeah it sucks when your 17) and then suing when they fire me. The fact that this woman is emotionally "sensitive" (read unstable) doesn't impress me, and if I was her boss I would have fired her after one week of this nonsense. If you can't handle the stress of your job it is not your employers responsibility to pay you for doing nothing, quit and become a garbage collector (not trying to inslt garbage collectors) or construction worker (again, not saying they have no stress) or some low-stress job where not much is expected of you (Microsoft Programmer, yes I am trying to insult Microsoft).
Langauge X is better, it runs on average about 3 times faster than slow-ass langauge Y.
Langauge X sucks, it's not incredibly portable or as easy to use as Langauge Y, and speed is becoming less important as time marches on.
But what about LNOU (Langauge No One Uses) it's got both the speed of Langauge X and the ease and portability of Langauge Y.

Seriously, I'm mostly playing arround with C++ right now (and I love it) but Java, Python, Perl, and most of the other langauges out there ALL have their uses. Yes, all of them. D will be no different, it will have a few great features that supporters will throw in the oppositions face and a few downsides that the opposition will exaggerate. I gave the specification a look over and it seems to me that D is basically what C++ would be if the designers hadn't given a damn about backwards compatability with C, except they are removing a few usefull (in my opinion) features of C++ and either replacing them or dropping them completely. The specification is still rough, but overall D looks like a decent langauge, one made to work well rather than confor to some ideal (kinda like C++, again IMO). The guy is very straight forward about what D should not be used for and gives examples of some things it would be good at.
I guess what the whole thing comes down to is "How Good Will It Be". If the answer doesn't end up being "Wow, I Can't Live Without It" then D will fail even if it's much better than other, older solutions, simply because no one wants to port old code or learn a newer langauge when the old one still works fine. That's the reason why many of the newer langauges don't have the following their creators think they should (and they may be right), they're simply not worth the time or effort it would take to learn them and port them. Unless D is absolutely incredible I know I'll be sticking with C++. Why? Because C++ simply WORKS for what I'm doing right now, and there is no reason to all of my code or learn yet another langauge when the one I'm using is fast and easy enough to get the job done, and C++ is already a proven langauge (as is C), as widely used as it is....it's not going anywhere.
Go look at the known bugs of Windows 9x and NT (I suggest you only read the first few THOUSAND pages for EACH OS) then try and find a patch for each and every one of them (not a good way to stay sane....but u might not have anything to worry about). The fact that Linux Distro's admit they make mistakes and post patches BEFORE something like Code Red happens is what makes it MORE secure and LESS buggy. BTW most of the patches/updates listed on the Redhat site are NOT fixing bugs, look carefully....all the patches that fix bugs say "This fixes...." the rest are just optional updates that add more features....features you get for free instead of paying more for them.....what a novel concept.
Windows NT (Or any version of Windows for that matter) is a decent program? You must see the irony in defending Windows by claiming other OSs are buggy, be honest with yourself and admit which is the buggier OS, Linux or Windows. If you conclude that Windows is less buggy, explain why there are Linux users measure their uptimes in weeks while Windows users measure them in hours......yet the average numbers of Linux uptimes are still larger than they average numbers of Windows uptimes (such as 30 weeks compared to 24 hours). It sounds like you think all Open Source software is "crappy and buggy".....I guess your right, I mean what are the odds that there are some good programmers out there who code for FUN. As for a "few" bucks, let's see.....company with 1500 computers needs an OS, Linux = FREE and more reliable (there are stats to prove this, look them up), NT = EXPENSIVE and less reliable. The only reason NT is widely used is because companies want to increase employee productivity (Like Fred the Janitor/Visual Basic Programmer/NT Admin). If you want to know the intelligence of MOST NT admins, just consider the amount of Code Red infestations and how long the patch has been out, NT admins expect the OS to do everything but wipe their ass (this feature is expected in XP), Linux/Unix admins generally LIKE their jobs and are INTERESTED in the computer world....thus they INSTALL patches (that are produced much quicker than closed source patches I might add). Seriously, try Linux for 1 month (Honestly try it, which means learn the commands) I am absolutely sure that after learning how to use Linux and gaining experience with it you will realize the truth about which OS is crappy and buggy.
I prefer my home-brewed Toxic Sludge (coffee made using three times the amount of coffee grounds reccomended then mixed with sugar at a 1:1 ratio). Be warned drinking more than one full pot of Toxic Sludge in 4 hours can cause a person to OD (even I, the creator of Toxic Sludge, thought my heart was going to burst after two pots). This recipe allowed me to stay awake and lively for approximately 80 hours (taken regularly, about 3 pots a day) before I started to notice strange involuntary muscle twitches and minor nausea. Please drink Toxic Sludge responisbly, and yes PLAYING QUAKE MULTI-PLAYER AFTER CHUGGING A FULL POT OF TOXIC SLUDGE IS CHEATING and extremely dangerous.
Hopefully it won't end up like 90% of the people who go down that road, drugged-out, bimbo starlet doing softcore porn (and the director) to support it's escalating Coke addiction:)
Who wants to bet they'll still manage to put out multi-billion dollar "master pieces"....generally with nice fancy roman numerals next to the title to exploit the success of a previous successful movie (Jurassic Park II or III), or based on a video game that never really had much of a plot (Streetfighter).
I resent that.....I'm an equal opportunity perv, I alternate the focus of my stare (occasionally even reaching I level:)). I also don't purposefully drop things and ask the lady to pick them up (thats so childish). No in the era of the mini-skirt (I love high-school) I am glad to pick up my own crap....and theirs too. Your idea of light-emitting implants is a solid one however and I encourage you to quickly patent it before some unscrupulous company comes along and steals it. I can think of several other features that might be usefull in implants: a space heater, modem jack, a movie projector, mp3 player, coin slot for purchase of beverages, etc...
Now thats an oxymoron if I've ever heard one. I used to have Roadrunner (AOL/Timewarner cable ISP) and sure while it was working I loved it, but for the first three months (incidently all free) I ended up without an internet connection about 2-3 times a week....sometimes for over 2 days. The tech-support sucked (then again, whose ever experienced decent tech-support for a problem that a chimp couldn't figure out?). For some reason after my free trial period it began to work properly (what a coincidence)......eventually I got sick of the "service" when I was without an internet connection for more than a week (the only response from tech-support being "We don't know whats wrong, no we won't just replace the cable modem....it can't be faulty even though we've tried everything else 3 times, no we won't give you a free month, yes we are still charging you, if you don't like it go back to 56k"). Then I started to look into maybe getting DSL, but of course it wasn't available in my area (well technically it was available in my area...just not at my address). What do I use now? A 56k modem on the second worst ISP ever (MSN, only AOL is worse, damn 4 year subscription computer deals). Which brings me to some sort of point (if you can call it one)......all services suck, whether it's high prices, unreliability, or the speed of a Sloth, everyone gets shafted somehow, the whole industry needs a swift painful kick in the ass.
BTW, does anyone know if AOL/Timewarner give half-price service if you use your own cable modem (I remember seeing on their site that part of the monthly fee was the cable modem rental, but when I asked them about it I was given the "duh, I don't know" and told to E-mail so and so (who never e-mailed me back), recently I went back to their site and couldn't find any mention of the cable-modem rental being part of the fee)? I could definately save myself some time, money, and trouble if I install the damn thing myself and just pay them for service.
true, prison probably wouldn't be all that great (even though I'd be chilling in a minimum security country club) but I'm pretty sure that they can't even put you in a minimum security prison until your convicted, I might be wrong but I think people awaiting trial are held somewhere a little more agreeable. If I did have some problems with a fellow prisoners, I'm sure my 250+ pounds and martial arts training would come in handy:). Worse comes to worse, smack a gaurd and get thrown in solitary for a few weeks (I like being by myself) then when your found innocent claim Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome from the confinement (provable by the feces you rubbed on the wall of solitary while singing "I'm a Little Teapot") and get a nice fat check from the government. The real reason prisons are no fun is because people aren't creative enough, my father had some experience with prisons too (goes with his "profession"), he acted like a loon (not too far from the truth) and he was pretty much left alone.
I'll proudly publicize the results of his work (giving him full credit for the discovery). After all I live in the U.S and personally wouldn't mind 3 meals and a cott plus an extension to my summer vacation. Not to mention the lawsuits to follow my arrest (yeah I know I'd have no legal grounds but when has that ever mattered?) should pay my way through college. Or better yet why doesn't he let a Dutch friend who doesn't plan on visiting the land of the oppressed anytime soon or just post it anonymously. There seems to be no point in keeping it secret now, after all he did openly admit violating the DMCA already (it's illegal to do it, not just to publish your work) and I have a feeling that if he comes to the U.S anytime soon he'll be sitting in a jail cell right next to Dmitry (well at least where Dmitry was before he made bail).
Whats worse than us having to wait a bit longer to find out how he cracked the encryption, is the fact that now the U.S will think that the DMCA is working and will fight for it much harder. I understand his fear, but the fact is he's already violated the DMCA (I won't bring jurisdiction into play, after all the U.S obviously doesn't understand the word, except when it comes to chasing after murderers and rapists...then it's strictly observed).
AMD chips run faster than Intel chips clocked up to 300Mhtz higher in most situtations. They are also sell their superior chips cheaper and more honesty (meaning they don't put out of POS chip that runs SLIGHTLY faster than an AMD chip clocked 300Mhtz lower, slap a 1.8Ghtz sticker on it and fleece the morons for all their money). AMD chips ARE like American cars, they are the Ford Mustang, the Chevy Corvette, the Chevy Camarro, fine pieces of smoothly running machinery that last for many years if taken care of properly (change the oil....install an extra cooling fan). By unreliable you must be referring to AMD in it's early days....when they were starting out fighting an uphill battle against Wintel, today they are the best. If you have an AMD machine and it's not working properly I assure you that it's either a faulty chip (yes it does happen, to all chip manufacturers) or you.
I'm not as concerned about employers monitoring what their employees do while at work as I am about the government monitoring what citizens do while at home. Has anyone here heard anything recent about Carnivore, the FBI's E-mail monitoring software? I remember there being a luke-warm rash of arguments against it, then it just kind of faded away in to the "Oh well, we tried." train of thought. What about RIAA monitoring file-sharing? Employers have at least a decent argument on monitoring internet usage, after all they are paying people for their time but the government of RIAA have no right at all to monitor what we do in our homes.
Wow a chair.....Wow a $700 chair....I have a chair, its a Zeus Ultra 500 Kitchen Chair (yes I made that up) it has great features, like a spot to park your ass in and a high tech back support to lean against. Really who spends that much money on a chair? For $700 you could get a Tyan Dual Athlon mother board and two 1.4Ghtz AMD Athon T-Bird (and yes, you can use them with the dual athlon board, no matter what Tyan and AMD say).
Someone explain to me how the hell my post is a troll. It gives facts explaining that the courts did not tell MS that they couldn't use Java and why MS decided to get rid of Java. If you want to mark it redundant or overrated fine, but marking it as a troll is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. BTW, this is a legitimate request for information....I truly want to know how that post is a troll.
OK, this article claims the "open" internet is dying......but as I carefully scan through the article the only actual information besides what is wrong with the internet today is "Cisco and competitors are already designing smarter switches". Now can anyone explain how having intelligent switches that control the path of data better will "kill" the open internet. It doesn't seem to me that just because data will flow more efficiently the open internet will die. Hell, they don't even explain what the "closed" internet is and how it will come about....overall a losy article that is extremely short on facts to support it's position.

Please drink Toxic Sludge responisbly, and yes PLAYING QUAKE MULTI-PLAYER AFTER CHUGGING A FULL POT OF TOXIC SLUDGE IS CHEATING and extremely dangerous.
uh oh, u did it......you posted a cheap stock price on slashdot.....today 60c tomorrow $1000.....seriously.
Hopefully it won't end up like 90% of the people who go down that road, drugged-out, bimbo starlet doing softcore porn (and the director) to support it's escalating Coke addiction :)
Who wants to bet they'll still manage to put out multi-billion dollar "master pieces"....generally with nice fancy roman numerals next to the title to exploit the success of a previous successful movie (Jurassic Park II or III), or based on a video game that never really had much of a plot (Streetfighter).
I resent that.....I'm an equal opportunity perv, I alternate the focus of my stare (occasionally even reaching I level :)).
If I did have some problems with a fellow prisoners, I'm sure my 250+ pounds and martial arts training would come in handy :).
