    its much like citrix, basiclyy allows you to have Backend farm of app servers and serve stuff up form the backend. greate for enterprises with lots of apps.

    The goverment has alot of different OS's I am sure. With I am sure windows having the biggest footprint. I am also sure this is an attempt to secure the windows footptint. they should have mandated patching and security settings / levels a long time ago, and once more they should do it will all OSs in use with the goverment not just microsoft OS. but all software used by the goverment should have to conform to a standard. and that should apply accross the board. with it runs on a Nix or win.

    its all about the apps, most windows shops have heavy investments in windows based infrastructure. that includes exchange, .NET apps, and all sorts of someware and middleware.

    replacing it all is not easy, and many shops dont have the stomach for it, or the talent. and in some cases the shops have windows apps that can only run in windows. that all said:
    when you really look at Vista objectiveily its a huge improvement over xp and 2k.

    but sure it does have some things that are odd and different that annoy you, but in some and most cases that can be changed.

    and some of the postive stuff like low rights framework that IE uses is exposed so other apps can use it. and .NET is a good thing.

    I am not surperised, most of these large shops, end up with a halfway decent 'programmer' who is very policly savy incharge of these kinds of mess's. not only that: this person usally is very poor at design and architure. more of a manager, inaddition i will bet poor design and interenal polics really is what crashed this beast. you Have to have a design/architect who is really techincal.

    and a project manager who understands the project working together, other wise you see the results.

    Even the much vuanted google desktop had information discloser issues.
    as this type of technology comes to the mainstream its to be expected the early stuff may have a bug or two. (see: google desktop)

    and here they are slamming microsoft for a new feature people are asking for. and telling them how to do it, when they have no idea on how hard this kind of thing is to do from a software engineering perspective.

    I mean sheesh The product is in BETA, make a bug report to microsoft as a beta tester if you find a bug.

    I mean windows vista has alot of very new stuff under the hood which is very cool. much of the stuff effects security and stability which is a good thing.

    hmm, this is an interesting topic of which i have always thought ever since i was in my early twentys(i'm in my late 30s)

    when i was in my early 20s i use to work at a supermarket part time and i would see the older people not being able to do basic stuff, and then i would see my dad and grandfather who where in some cases older then them and they where perfectly fine.

    i have see many "techs" on my way up the "tech/geek" ladder over the years let there skills slide to the point where they are barely compatent.

    and i think thats the case, it goes both ways, some of the youngins do it "puters" as a job, the come in, and work. period they dont do anything extra to learn anything new period.

    whereas "geeks" puters and tech is not jjust a job but also a hobbie..

    and there is the big difference, i will explorer and learn stuff on my lunch at home on my free time etc, so i am the "head geek" where i work.

    its a matter of perspective.

    I am not surprised, most users think "internet" Explorer" is the internet, so the fact that a "normal" user
    does not go out and download / install firefox. does not surprise me.

    on the otherhand, 7% + market share in such a short time is pretty good. and has firefox improves, (use less memmory) you will see improvments in the marget share. firefox has to be much better then "IE"

    for a normal user to switch to it, so the rapid marget will slow down and will creep up slowly...

    I think alot of people are really missing the point, but saying "use openbsd" or use "xzy". use can have a secure data server in gov or mil orgs and have secert or top seceret data on if without "trusted" computer and defined and verus security qualifacations. SElinux provides ROLE based access control. this is a good thing, as RH will add alots documentation to selinux and maybe even some tools as well.

    Not true:

    It does NOT take more Linux admisn to maintain a linux network then a admin a microsoft network. its the other way arround.

    it takes fewer *nix admins to maintain a large network then a large microsoft one. there have been lots of studys and such on the matter. it all comes down to the skill sets of the ppl involved.

    spreadsheet and word type programs are not so alien to each other as to not confer skillsets to transfer easiliy.

    OpenOffice, Koffice. and crossover to run MS office.

    whats important, is to learn how to use a computer, the how and whys. leanr the basics of what a spread is how it works and you will be able to use any spreadsheet quickly.

    I am very surprised:

    many people here really don't get it.

    gamil, is already the best webmail service by far in my opinion, and google will add other gmail types of services (Im,calender,etc)

    you will still have your laptops,desktops etc only you will have the option of have some or all of your data available anywhere with the google web services.

    it also would not surpirse me if GPG where offered somehwere down the line also...

    this is all about flexiblity not lockin or any types of big brother stuff.

    google will add, quility services and we will use them. over time. the 'web services' additude will change the way we think about our machines.

    about about rsyncing/ifoldering

    your data to your google space?

    who knows, what kinds of stuff maybe coming down the pipe

    These things are pretty cool, but i think an ultra light laptop (about 2Lbs) is far better for this typeof work. altho u could not really use it as a pda.

    i think a decent PDA and an ultra light laptop is prety much all you need.

    and Since you have issues "moving" from your win95 machine to your winME machine. its not our fault you are a clueless nimbskull.

    and this is a "MOVE"

    you are replacing 14,000 machines, OS, and apps.

    I would call that a MOVE.

    and most apps are used in large enterprises because they are needed. not beucase some wet behind the ears punk, decided to install it on 5,000 machines.

    designing a network that big is not easy, go back to your lego's

    First Of all, this is a Great migration move.

    You get a Full Linux Backend, and Linux desktops.

    But reality is, that you have all sorts of apps that are windows based, that are not easyly replaced.

    so a good migration move is running, win 3.1 or win 95 or DOS 6.1. In VmWare which comes with SUSE in the Munich deal. antil those apps can be ported.

    or a linux solutuon can be found.

    all alrge enterprises , take along time for complex migrations. this is just part of it. its a great move.

    it says there are 5 licenses that come with it.

    and this is targeted at bissness's who buy in bulk anyways. so this is a good deal.

    comes out to $100 per seat with support not bad....

    using RH8:

    and apt4rpm i was able to get .mov and all the movie media file to work in mplayer.

    using apt-get install MPLAYER and ALL its plugins including transcode.

    then:

    apt-get install xmms*
    ## this will install xmms and all its plugins which include the codecs that will make the sound work for the quicktime movies.

    Eugenia Loli-Queru, reviews are very PICKY, and i find them sometimes leaving stuff out or just a rant session.

    MDK 9.0 has built in support to join MS domains in the installer, real clean works great.

    she didnt even know antil a post posted it,

    i would take her review not as a final word but:

    "with a grane of salt"

    her hardware and setup a far from normal,

    and she installs the os one time on ONE machine and that become the """"review""" of it.

    she should install it a few times ussing different
    methodes each time and fully explore the OS, taking in to account the target of the OS, and other factors. and not just some multi page rant like some idiot.

    the more a read Eugenia Loli-Queru the i find her
    lacking, to be fair, some stuff she says is REALLY good,

    but some stuff is really BAD.

    looks like it might be a little more then something just in PGP, if they are releasing an update to the
    openPGP standard.

    altho i suspect PGP is the "most" vulenerable to this , It would be interesting to see what other openPGP software is really effected.

    There is also SElinux,

    Mandatory Access Control, is also a better security Model than
    Discretionary Access Control, of witch is the current model of most network OS's "out of the Box"

    With MAC you have policey's the control access to services,files anything and if "something' trys to access a services it must be part of the policey that tells it what it is aloud to do, if it trys something out side the policey it fails:

    kind of like a firewall's deny by policey,

    I think the model, of SELinux is pretty good it enforces policeys on both users ,software and services. and anything that does not match the policey gets denyed.

    A well setup Linux server with the SELinux "patch"
    would be a solid server.

    In my OWN opinion:
    the MAC security model in The SELinux patch is the way to go. the only issue with it is the complex setup and maintence.

    if those issues could be resloved and /or some better doc's /tools it would help Linux along way.
