"As an aside, do you believe that genetic paternity tresting is valid? If so, how do you feel about the same test showing that you are related to the monkey in the zoo down the street?"
We all have the same father.
Some just find they can live life easier ignoring Him.
On topic, not a troll, not overrated. I'm really tired of being modded down because I may have a minority opinion. Is that what slashdot stands for?
"Namely, that if a trait is beneficial to a species that it will be passed on from generation to the next."
That is not evolution. this is a COMMON mistake that should be dealt with accordingly. What you have referred to is "selective breeding" or "selective processes," sometimes referred to confusingly as "selective evolution." This is what has given us thousands of breeds of dogs, all from the original wolves. But they're all still canines. This states that a species will get stronger, but it cannot explain how a species would turn into another species, such as a lizard into a bird. That's just people who say they're alike, and then try to find stuff to back that up, non-objectively.
Didn't slashdot just post an evolution book review less than a week ago? How is this pertaining to slashdot? I suppose I should be waiting for the third book this wednesday.
Throughout the entire lifespan of Apple, they've continually shot themselves in the foot by exerting their power over what hardware and software people can use on the mac. Sure, you're given a higher level of compatibility through their stranglehold on the mac market, but this is a price you have to pay for that: loss of freedom.
I was upset until I thought about their history. This fits just perfectly with their decisions/strategies of the past, and ergo really shouldn't be a big surprise.
If microsoft released DVD burning software with windows and then said you can only use it on a microsoft-made DVD drive, the world would be up in arms. But it's not PC. It's Mac.
Welcome to Mac. On PC's, it's tough to decide what DVD drive and software to use. But on a mac, it doesn't give me all these confusing options. It just works.
"Over 37 people have been killed by falling soda machines since 1978 and over 100 injured" - ProductSafety.com
I hope they mean tipping soda machines. When I read falling soda machines I picture Wiley Coyote tied to a big helium baloon, dropping these things all over the place.
"The complaint [filed against the owner of the machine, the company that installed it and the company that owns the apartment building where the accident happened] alleges the defendants were negligent in installing and maintaining a machine that was dangerously unstable." In response, the community sued the parents for producing a kid so rediculously stupid and then trying to shift the blame so they could get money.
"When 17-year-old Gary Forestell ran to get soft drinks for his friends from a vending machine at a truck stop near Belleville, Ont., he tipped the machine forward just enough for the drinks to slide out - without putting in any money. Tipped too far, the machine crashed to the ground. When Gary didn't return, a friend went in search of him. He found him crushed to death."
"Prevention: Warn children never to rock or tip vending machines, and make sure that machines at school are bolted to walls or the floor." Also, warn your children never to walk up to a boulder on a hill and pull it towards them. But damn, your kids would have to be pretty stupid.
"most of the 200 people included in the file have been minorities from poor, high-crime neighborhoods."
While I am vehemently against any sort of database of, as far as the government is concerned, innocent people, I have no problem believing that poor people from high-crime 'hoods are more likely to break laws than the same age bracket of people in a golf course community. Even if it isn't politically correct, let's be real and not pretend this is shocking. Many of these people have nothing to lose and everything to gain. It's the most simple social science.
"Evolution is like gravity, both fact and theory. The fact is that it does, has, and will continue to happen. The theory is how it happens. Darwin's contribution was not evolution's existence; this much was already known. His contribution was a mechanism for evolution to happen--descent with modification due to natural selection."
So we have witnessed one species become another? Where was I? Rather, we have witnessed dogs get big, small, and get new colors, shorter tails, bigger eyes, But over thousands and thousands of years, they're still dogs.
I wont resort to ad hominim. You shouldn't either.
Oh, and...
"Claiming that evolution and creation are both "just theories" shows an astounding ignorance of science"
Then am I wrong when I say it is called the Theory of Evolution?
To say a theory is anything other than, "shows an astounding ignorance of science." including the foundation of science, the fricking scientific method:p
Any scientist who says one "did" absolutely positively happen is practicing a faith, not science. In essence, they're both religions, with whacko irrational devotees on both sides.
Is spelling things wrong supposed to be cool? Becuase if it is, the Kash and Karry down the street is cooler than the Kiddie Kountry day care down the block.
Enough spelling things wrong. It's not cool. It just looks stupid.
" A robot has taught itself the principles of flying -- learning in just three hours what evolution took millions of years to achieve, according to research by Swedish scientists published on Wednesday. "
WRONG! This creature was created/born with the neccesary equipment to fly. The evolution argument is for how long it took birds to grow wings, or whatever they believe. 3 hours is how long this "newborn" learned to fly, which is comprable to some other advanced birds.
And my second point: Evolution and Creationism are both theories that should not be stated as fact in any publication that wants to remain credible in the eyes of true scientists who use the scientific method before stating something as fact.
What else is new? Since the beginning of this legal system, it's always been a costly risky proposition to fight a large corporation, but I'll be damned if I would just turn over for them. Fuck that.
Who the hell do they think they are, telling people "You can't do that. The gov't says you can, bur we say you can't, and our rules are more important because we have money."
That churns my stomach, and I would be on the phone with a lawyer, if not the EFF, so fast, my phone would warp from the heat. Some people might say don't bother the EFF. They're busy enough. Granted they're busy. But this is the reason they exist, and the fact they're busy is a great indicator of a climate in which we should do *anything* but turn over.
Flash really sucks. I've gone over it before. Just thought I'd mention that I would also like to see the screenshots, but I won't, for the same reasons.
You've got to be kidding. Apparently you're comfortable in that box you've put up around your small town existence. Good god man, get out once in a while.

For some reason, it appears that those of you not in the seed cities have a hard time realizing that projects need to begin somewhere. I don't get it. Should they build it along the whole state simultaneously? It would take decades before ANY fruit was borne. I think a better idea would be to get it set up in the major cities first, and use that to gather data.
Hey, wait a minute... That's what they're doing...

"except of course that ATM's dont reproduce and selectively pass on traits, jackass."
you think I was kidding? People say the entire universe came from nothing when the nothing, whose origins they cant explain, exploded.
So why, given enough time, can something not produce an ATM machine?
There is nothing to stop one species from becoming another given enough time and enough "selective breeding". Nothing.
There's nothing to stop them from becoming ATM machines either, given enough time. That's why it's such a rediculous argument.
"People who argue against evolution usually don't have a clue what the mechanisms of evolution actually are."
:)
Funny, same goes for those who argue for it

MS will probably find a way to remedy this, so act quickly.
