I love screwing with the telemarketers that call work. Typical conversation (has been done countless times here):

Telemarketer: Hi this is mumble from mumble. I was just calling to get the model number of the copier in the office.

Me: Oh, ok, exactly what am I looking for?

T: A four or five digit number on the nameplate.

M: Oh, ok, I'll go check. [puts them on hold for 5 minutes or so] Sorry, I'm having trouble finding it, what am I looking for again?

T: A number right next to the brand name.

M: Oh, sorry, I'll go check again. [puts them on hold for 5 minutes, again] I'm real sorry here, I'm having trouble finding it.

T: [starting to get annoyed] It's a four or five digit number right next to the brand, like Canon or Xerox, on the front of the copier.

M: Oh, all right, I'm real sorry, let me look one more time. [hold for 2 or 3 minutes] Well, I'll tell you, I just can't find it. Sorry about that.

T: It should be right there on the front of the copier - four digit number.

M: No I guess, you don't understand, I'm having trouble finding the copier.

Sorry, I offhandedly said three or four years. I've probably used etree for 3 1/4 years (which fits nicely between the qualifiers). We (myself and some other amateur dead archivists) certainly were in the first wave of shorten users in Northern Arizona, and have avidly pushed lossless compression format (as well as etree) to our friends. No harm intended, just trying to spread the word. And no, my server doesn't qualify due to upstream speed, but I certainly tell folks fell free to grab a 256kbs stream overnight. Its all about the music isn't it?

Thanks for the site. You've certainly helped the cause on allowing folks to freely trade the most amazing music available.

  9. So Much Music, So Little Time on New File Sharing Networks · · Score: 4, Informative

I have been using Etree for three or four years now. For those not aware here, etree site-op's release their server content on the etree-announce mailing list periodically. Users can download, through FTP, high quality concerts from folks like The Grateful Dead and other microphone friendly bands. I think what keeps etree pure currently, is that with only a (relatively) few site-ops, control over content, is easily implemented. This will undoubtedly collapse under the massive abuse inherent in peer-to-peer networks.

It would be quite sad to see .shn's of Brittney Spears 2/18/02 Cleveland Show being traded alongside some of music's most influential live bands. For what it's worth check out what is being traded on etree at their database site

Oh, I didn't realize that there was a difference (other than price) between audio and data blanks. If people are willing to spend more money on a blank CDR that is stamped AUDIO, then maybe they deserve to pay the RIAA a royalty.

  12. Re:Issues on Wolfenstein Linux Binaries Available · · Score: 1
Yes I am one of those folks who doesn't run Windows, and yes I find the whole RTCW thing unfortunate. Why should they (id, activision, whomever) toss aside the linux user as a non-entity, when a goodly amount of the _dedicated_ servers for RTCW will be running on linux platforms. So id goes ahead and releases akward binaries for the multiplayer aspect of the game, undoubtedly, to quench the certain stream of unhappy server admins' emails. I doubt the "black whole [sic]" is as empty as you might imply.

I shot off an email to activision on the 19th of November (2 days prior to this going gold) asking if they had plans to release the game in linux and was met with a stock response on how company policy was to not discuss unreleased games. Following up on the question they responded on the 28th:

At 11/28/2001 07:49 AM we wrote -Hello, We will not be releasing a RTCW for
    linux.

So I guess I will have to wait until Loki, Tuxgames, or somebody tries to port the whole game. Hopefully someone does, and hopefully linux gamers will buy it. I wish game developers would take a hard look at how Black Isle has decided to simultaneously release Never Winter Nights on linux, Mac, and windows platforms. The excitement that this has generated is phenomenal, and there is a good chance, IMHO, NWN will break records in the linux department.

I would think the bugtraq correspondence a little more trustworthy in this situation.
