I'm just in shock! Microsoft lying to further their own product? Naw....I mean, they are only supposed to do what's in the public good, right?
Oh wait.
on the other hand, the paragraph " For OEMs considering or planning to enter the server appliance market, the choice between Linux or Windows for a server appliance operating system involves critical trade-offs between platform functionality, incremental engineering and development effort, overall cost, and, most importantly, time-to-market. Ultimately, the OEM's goal is to select an operating system and tool set that enable them to get to market quickly, limit development cost, and differentiate their appliance, all on a reliable platform that delivers superior price-performance. In addition, OEMs want an operating system that delivers proven value from a reputable vendor who will support them for the long term." makes me wonder if they aren't secretly using linux on their servers.:P
One hell of an interesting article. Too bad it all ended like that, right up until the EPA took down the reactor, it seemed he'd have a bright future ahead of him.
Same idea. Nobody in the Music industry is going to get physically injured because of file sharing, ergo, breaking the law is not justified or protected.
Whether this counts as something illegal is another story though -- sure, it's definitely mean-spirited, but I doubt this would be illegal.
gee you must be a genius. thank goodness you were there to lead those lost souls to the light.
either that or you're an obnoxious prick that people don't like talking to much.
try some humility on for size sometime. it's underrated.
Hell no, everybody should try some self-confidence once in a while. 95% of this could be fixed if people gave up the attitude of "no, only smart people can use computers.". Hell, it's not that hard to pick up something completely alien and fiddle around until it makes enough sense to work. Just a willingness to get to a point where you can say "nope, what I'm doing won't do what I want it to do, but I can try something else that looks like it might work too" is a great start.
In all things. If it seems like it might work, and you don't think you could hurt anything by giving it a shot, go for it. People are often suprised by what they learn they can do after they knock down the mental walls that tell us that others that do those things are somehow special.
That description has three words too many. Anime is one of the biggest elite-hoaxes perpetrated by Caucasian geeks attempting to make themselves superior.
There is only ever one anime plot. It involves one midget with a funny head shouting at another midget with a funny head. Why do they always shout? Why can't they talk normally?
The midgets then end up fighting for a bit. This is achieved by the animation style of a flat drawing with lots of 'movement lines' surrounding the midgets.
Oh yes, and then there's lots of flashing lights to give children seizures.
Wrong.
I'm not even going to waste my precious time explaining why.
I'm always on the lookout for cool shit, because if I wait for the American music industry to release music I actually like, I'll be old and senile before I listen to music again.:)
Though it probably doesn't really qualify, I composed all the music for the game I'm working on at http://powerusr.sphosting.com . If you like video-game music, you might want to download the alpha on the site(I call it a beta, but that's just because the game engine itself is fully functional, but the game isn't even close to completion yet) and fire up the midis in winamp or something.
Hey. it's entirely possible to enjoy both genres. Anime because of the dramatic and artistic shit, and Ren & Stimpy because it's just fuckin' hilarious.
Everybody should just grow up. Do you really expect a 1.6 GHZ processor to run as cool as a 486? Perhaps you have slightly unrealistic expectations of an excessively powerful, bleeding edge chip?
Next thing I'm bound to hear from the same vein: "ha ha ha! My twin cylinder dirtbike engine runs cooler and uses less gas than that V12 supercharged DOHC motor! the V12 sux0rz!"
regardless of whether you were being humorous, I've seen it too many times, and decided to say something about it.
Personally, I find that the signal to noise ratio for spam is WAY to high in my hotmail box(I don't use it anymore, and I got it back when it was just hotmail sans MS), to the point where I wade across hundreds of spam messages(many with decieving subject headers) before I hit an actual message.
after considering everything, I believe Blizzard is justified in suing BnetD, considering how bnetd opened the door to piracy of the beta versions of Warcraft III(because BnetD didn't authenticate whether or not the version was stolen or not). On the other hand, I think they should have done more to co-operate with the BnetD project leads, who would likely have jumped at the chance to give Blizzard a hand.
The lawsuit just seems like a miscalculation on blizzards part, and they can't easily retract something like that without losing some measure of credibility.
I had considered that after I posted the message. On the other hand, if you could add a part to said script to start the backup when the computer next boots up, things would be good(though you'd get a lot of "why is my computer so slow in the morning" calls for a while!)
uh...Why? There are far harder things to do out there than write up a few batch files to back up all the mapped drives and tell the server to run at midnight every night.
I think the easiest thing to do would be try to do it yourself remotely. Under Windows 2000, you can access the administrative share as \\machinename\c$ , so map those drives to some server somewhere(preferably one with lots of disk space), and have it auto-backup those computers at midnight(by just pulling the files right off the harddrives of those machines). It's not too tough to make Windows 98 share files so only the admin can use the share, just make sure you set up the right access-lists on your routers to stop the netbios-over-ip traffic from leaking onto the internet. No problem -- in theory at least, I'm sure there are implementation hassles.
If we let that happen, well - we got what we deserved for sleeping at the wheel.
...And how would we stop it? The same way we stopped the DMCA? The parent is absolutely correct. As long as any company can buy whatever laws it is convenient to have to ensure their profits, democracy is effectively circumvented. There really should be some brutally draconian legislation in force to protect against bribery. Something along the lines of "if you accept a bribe, you are a traitor and a terrorist" should work. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh here, but I feel very strongly about politicians selling out their own people(don't call them constituents, that dehumanizes them. The people being betrayed are neighbours and freinds, their kin and kind).
Yeah, my RedHat 7.3 installation is great -- but it won't run the thousands of dollars of software I've accumulated over the years(because wine hates me.).

1) What genre?
:)
2) Do you have a link?

Conversely, just because file trading is illegal doesn't make it legal for companies to break the law defending against it.
Did you know that muggers can sue you if you hurt them while defending yourself?
A world in which Bill Gates is god is not a world I'd like to live in.
fucking jap-cartoon-porn anime snob. suck me.

X-Box + TiVO : 500 dollars US.
MSI G4MX460 w/TV-IN&OUT: 250 dollars CDN.
Sticking it to da' man: Priceless.
...And in a society such as ours which glamorizes ignorance and worships intollerance, you are the king.
Thridly, who's the "we" in slashdot? As if you could EVER get 100% of readers (hell, even 85%) to agree on anything?
I take issue with that remark.
:-)

Me:Oh well...The reason it's so slow is because of solar flares. We've been having problems with those all month.
lUSER:<dummy mode on> Yeah, I thought I heard about that...
Me:Don't worry, it's easy to fix. unplug the main box. That's right, now take the monitor off.
lUSER:Okay, done.
Me:Okay, now find the nearest window, and drop the case out there. Solar flares hate that! Should run like a charm after that.
<Evil Grin>

Holy shit!
I can't belive I got that wrong!
I used to watch that show all the time.
*crawls under the desk and starts to cry...again*
uh...Why? There are far harder things to do out there than write up a few batch files to back up all the mapped drives and tell the server to run at midnight every night.
Bart said that.
We know Ralph is "special". Ralph knows Ralph is "special". somehow I don't think he'd be too shocked if he were to fail english.
...And if you make fun of people who want to arbitrarily ban things "for the children"...
You're a terrorist.
Love 'em or hate 'em, politicians are a great for laughs and zany catchphrases!

Then again, my 3 month old son doesn't know he shouldn't eat his hand. Same difference, I guess.
HEY! Hand is good eatin'.
