  1. Re:Ipso? on Nokia Starts Open Source Website · · Score: 2, Interesting

I worked with networking code in IPSO for some time on the P022 machines and found it a rather nice thing to work with. It is sturdy and does its job well. If there are internal struggles to actually replace it with a newer OS I do not understand why there is no opinion to move it to a NetBSD or FreeBSD and why linux ? Any definite advantages ?

  2. Re:Why? on Debian GNU/Solaris · · Score: 3, Insightful

Well, the answer would be manifold.

    1. Linux is just a kernel, nothing more. So for all practical purposes most of the fanboys out there using 'linux' and loving 'linux' are probably ending up loving the latest version of KDE, or gnome or the nifty new GNU tools and not linux. Full power of linux ? So if you consider all the gui stuff and nifty userland tools that you are using, you are hardly getting the 'full power of linux'

    2. Getting a different base kernel over the rocking GNU tools and environments for me is always cool. It is choice that I am getting. I will certainly try it out on an x86 machine, and if the kernel source is included, I would love to look through the design of the thing. Everybody loves tearing opening that shrink wrap from the latest gizmo.

    3. Sun has been pushing out some great publicity stuff wrt. Solaris 10 and how it 'screams'. I sure would like to check that out. I also would be very interested to see whether my bluetooth dongle or usb mass storage device will work with it or not. If it does not, it is less ready than linux for the desktop.

    4. I always thought that the linux kernel was a bit convoluted and unreadable compared to the BSD kernel. ( I have worked in the NetBSD and FreeBSD and Linux kernels ) I would love to have an opportunity to look into a new kernel and see how well it has been written and whether I can consider it a viable OS to suggest to my PHB for my next project, if it fits in there.

So, if someone out there is pushing across the new kernel in a familiar looking distro, I am certainly all for it. To sum it up, I think everybody stands to gain. The developer (choice) the user (choice again) and Sun (publicity).
    Hurrah for Open Source !

Firstly I would like to say that I totally agree with you. I am a citizen of a country which does have the freedom of speech and expression as a part of our constitution. However putting it into a constitution does not always ensure that happening. The nation has to be fiercely possesive about it. I think it is good to be illogical about a few things. The freedom of speech and expression is one of those things. Nobody should take a relative view of it. It is absolute. Once you start doing that you start to slip and suddenly you are in a place you never wanted to be in.

Well.. that is where I would fundamentally disagree with you. When I spend some money to buy an operating system I would not expect it to just show me a pretty screen and what files I have on my hard disk. I personally think that when I purchase an OS, I would want that OS to add value to the hardware by converting my hardware into a tool. That is where I really do not value windows. The OS does not give you anything at all.
It is like buying a car which has an engine and runs well (in short spurts, I may add) but the steering wheel and the brake pedal are accessories which have to be purchased at an extra cost.
My take is that if I PAY for base OS should have a set of tools word processor/spreadsheet/browser so that I can actually use my computer after I have purchased the OS, and not play with pretty buttons. Otherwise give it to me for free. (as in beer)

Now the catch is that we were running our tweaked version of NetBSD on the x86 control plane, which was running the routing daemons. So if there is a BSD licenced BGP out there, it is possible to deploy it on the above mentioned box.
So my point is that we actually have rather fancy boxes out there running *BSD.

-- I have a few mp3s on it which I can hear when I commuting to work
-- I sync my calendar/todo with my phone so I exactly know whether I can turn up late for work or not and am in sync with the whole day when I start for work
-- I play games on it (including FPS)
-- I use my XHTML browser/GPRS to check my webmail and also catch up on the cricket scores when I am on the move

As far as I go. my smart phone serves as my mp3 player, my PDA, a web browser and a game deck. It actually benefits me and I think smart phones are good things.

It produces the prettiest documents without all that horrible GUI. We might be screaming ourselves hoarse about how computer literate/savvy and what not we are but when it comes to actually using unix based tools, we go pffft...

Honestly, Koffice is a bad tool. About 2 years ago. The last time I used it, it would crash with the every second thing I typed in. After that I pretty much dont use it. In fact I pretty much dont install it. The problem is that we are ( although a large number of people who think they use unix will scream ) trying very hard to make unix-windows. I used to think that people at /. would not be pretty much interested in Koffice -- there is latex and if you want wysiwig, you have lyx. Well but sadly, the so called unix geeks run unix because it gives them a feel good geek feeling.. that is all. They do not use unix because of the advantages of unix, they use unix because it is so cool...

Has anybody ACTUALLY tried documentation on unix before they go ooh and aah about OO and Koffice ? I really dont think so. If we actually are the developer/IT/unix community that we so vociferously say that we are, and were actually using unix in our day to day work, we would not have been using Koffice. I think a large number of people on this forum use unix as a web browser -- that is all.

The latex/xfig combination has been serving me perfectly for some time now. Apart from using them for normal day to day activities, I use them for development documentation also. It produces extremely high quality documents and of the things I like about it is that I can version my documents effectively in CVS. It can also be used to make presentations. That leaves the spreadsheet stuff... go and use anything.. OO ( is my choice )

But please please please, you new-unix-kids-on-the-block try and pick up some unix first before going linux-is-oh-so-cool....

After some amount of searching, the best solution for me was to have a separate modelling tool and a separate editing tool.
I have used Rational Rose as the modelling tool which I found to be exhaustive and efficient, and for editing, the good old vim+ctags combo. Whereas I could design my system using Rose efficiently and then generate the skeleton code, the vim editor would give me the power of a fast, feature rich editor. This has worked out for me to a certain degree.
