To make a real dent in the death and suffering, all we need to do is become civilised. We live in a world controlled by violent states that are responsible for more death and destruction than anything else on this planet. About 240 million people have died between 1 Jan 1900 and 31 Dec 2000 in wars and that doesn't count the indirect deaths from the pollution that they produced. Wars use radioactive weapons, a massive amount of fossil fuel, not only to power vehicles and generate electricity but also to build weapons, feed soldier etc. This unnecessary pollution will kill people, animals and plants for generations. Wars are mass murders sanctioned by the state. Once we add in the non-war murders, which are mostly caused by the state in my opinion, the number are staggering. In 2012, there was an estimated 466,078 murders world wide. We don't need billions of dollars to solve this problem.
You had me until you compared Elon Musk to Steve Jobs. Really? From what I've read, they've used completely different management styles. Elon Musk leads by example and inspires people to work for him. Steve Jobs was inspiring too until you worked for him and soon realised that he was a tyrant. We don't need or want another tyrant.
We can't really let this thread go on without mentioning São Paulo. Looks like the experiment is going well too.
Five years later, São Paulo continues to exist without advertisements. But instead of causing economic ruin and deteriorating aesthetics, 70 percent of city residents find the ban beneficial, according to a 2011 survey. Unexpectedly, the removal of logos and slogans exposed previously overlooked architecture, revealing a rich urban beauty that had been long hidden.
I couldn't believe the Boxee guys had the audacity and stupidity to turn on the people who supported them. I sold my Boxee Box about 1 month after I bought it and got 2 ATV2's for about the same price! The ATV2 was $99 and the Boxee Box was $180 IIRC. I prefer XMBC over Firecore but at least I have the freedom to chose on my jailbroken ATV2.
All the Thunderbolt hoopla seems to be coming from the Apple marketing machine. It's no wonder everyone thinks it's Apple proprietary technology and at the same time this is exactly what Apple wants everyone to think. They're quite good at convincing the world that all their ideas are original and that no other product can compete with what "they've" produced. I'm shocked that you're shocked.
Web Components will be useful when theyr'e eventually implemented in browsers other than WebKit but a better solution already exists and is supported by all major browsers. JavaScript. It can be just as declarative as XML, more succinct and much more powerful.
Here's how I write my web apps lately.

The best approach is not a blanket one, but one that would take bullies and send them social workers to figure out what the hell is going on to begin with.
Unless the social worker can change the culture in which this person lives in, I doubt she can do much good.
Sheesh, take your negativity elsewhere.
And debt interest. http://www.usdebtclock.org/
Why not dig instead of going 500 ft tall?

And not until Servo (next gen Firefox rewritten in Rust) is out; around version 100.
Getting rich would be an abysmal consolation but apparently, you're not even getting that.

That's essentially what node.js does.

No. Copying will never be a threat to society. It could be a threat to the profit of the investors though but that is still up for debate.
Prison should be reserved for people who pose a serious threat to society. Is copying a DVD and selling it a serious threat?
Ahh, then I assumed wrong. I misinterpreted your question as rhetorical. I agree with what you're saying.
Isn't it ironic how the hard core Agile folks aren't very agile when it comes to the Agile methodology.
You've made two wrong assumptions.
Yes, but you can't a nerd's perspective on those other sites.
