  1. You mean her daughter's child? on Obama Answers Science Policy Questionnaire · · Score: 1

It's probably nothing, but there are strong rumors of the child being actually her daughter's. Who just happened to have "mono" and miss school for months just up to the time of her "brother."

  3. That's because US banks are fucked up on Pitfalls of Automated Bill Payment · · Score: 1

And so are their companies, when it comes to consumer rights. They have good reason to be riled up; if the phone company makes a mistake, tries to withdraw $10k, you don't have them ... well, it's never THEIR problem until you spend $20k on a lawyer to fix it.
And until then, their credit rating is fucked, and should they need a mortgage, it's gonna cost them a nice $100k more. I'm probably exagerating but that's I gather.
In Europe we (still) have consumer protection, because we (still) have a functioning state, despite the combined efforts of the likes of Thatcher and Sakrozy.

Other than that, everything said applies here, too.
I can chime in with a few informations on how automated debit works, having briefed by a banker I know. First of all, not every company can apply, and there's a vetting process before the priviledge is granted to a creditor. A background check is done on the executives, I believe.
Then, most importantly, the priviledge can be revoked at any time if the company makes too many errors.

It has long been shown (well, at least 10 years), at least theoretically, than run time optimized code /can/ be faster than compile time only optimized code.
That's because there's only so much a static optimizer can work on, because without some super advanced AI from the future it can't really tell what the code is actually going to be used for.
Runtime optimization of C is impractical (although it's been done) and not that useful anyway (the gains are not dramatic), while for interpreted code it's ideal and the results are impressive.
So in the end, yes, there are cases where this optimized JavaScript will be faster than the same C code.

Software patents suck, they're absurd, but there are plenty of patent trolls out there who are busy sueing everyone they can milk, whether or not you file yours. You won't make a difference; not even in the sense that just one person's vote does'nt make much of a difference. That's not a vote.
On the other hand, should you file and get a patent, your opinion wrt software patents would have more weight. You could write your congressman asking for patent reform and say "I've got a patent and I think the system is BS."

You don't get it, do you? I'm fine with Bill O' attacking any politician he wants, just as I'm fine with KO doing it.

The difference is that KO didn't abuse, insult and threaten the son of a 9/11 victim on his show. BillO did.

Clinton on the other hand left plenty for the media to grab. Weird emotional angles, dubious appeals to race ...
