Alternatively, slashdot could pay people for their accumulated karma. The users are what make this site. And the owners are raking in the bucks (well, if they were smart enought to cash in their stock options when they sold out).
Someone should start a new slashdot that pays the users for *their* content. I have relatively good karma points and it would be nice to share a chunk of that pie that they've been eating.
I wonder if the folks at Microsoft are considering Passport as a micropayment vehicle for subscription-based websites?
I'm sure that was part of the whole "big picture". I'd be willing to bet that they'll start bundling a few bucks worth of micropayment into every unique Windows license. This gets everyone over the initial ramp-up and into the premium content. Kinda like the drug dealer business model. The first ones are free.
As much as we all dislike Microsoft, I do think that they are needed to get the ball rolling on this. Either them or some other large entity that can afford to bundle this up into something that is *seemingly* free.
First model rockets and then weapons of math instruction. Tomorrow's scientists will be supplied with only a small fork with a safety cork covering the sharp bits.
Backward compatibility used to be a cornerstone of the MS business model. They'd lock you in and then you'd be stuck. But since there is real competition coming, they can no longer focus only on this model.
With Win2k came stability. With the next incarnation will come security. Once they tackle the minor other bits, they'll have a near perfect OS. Obviously, it would only be perfect if it were free and open-source but this will give them a leg up on that. I do know that OSS has a long way to go before I will consider it.
Let's face it, you can't remain compatible with old software forever.
Especially spyware.
I've found, that if you go into IE's securty preferences (TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > SECURITY > CUSTOM LEVEL) and set all of the options that are set on "prompt" to "disable" keeps a PC from contracting spyware (that propagates through web browsing).
I've found that this is a better solution than telling my father-in-law to use the power button when he encounters a web page that LOCKS a user into picking YES when prompted with that ActiveX security warning garbage.
What will the slashdot community do when Microsoft fixes all of their problems? If they execute the antivirus and spyware solutions properly, It'll be a while until I look back.
Antivirus is now part of the OS. Heck, just today, we saw the first cell phone virus.
This is great news. Now, all that we need is an anti-spyware countermeasure from MS and we're all set. Stability, security and privacy. What will we all bitch about?
Even though they are evil, SBC's DSL service is relatively affordable. It would be nice if California would also require that they not discriminate on the pricing side. This will be a moot law when SBC offers DSL for $150/month. It'll be cheaper to get the phone line and DSL bundle.
Have you ever tried printing those 2 megapixel images? 2.0 may be all well and good on a monitor, but printing is a whole 'nother ballgame. You won't be getting any kind of acceptable 8x10's out of that.
I've had full page shots from my 2MP Powershot A60 printed in real, live magazines. They work FINE for 8x10 or 8.5x11 for that matter.
The parent poster is correct. 2MP is more than enough for most people. I never recommend more than 3.2 - 4MP for most anyone who solicits my opinion. Unless someone is looking for room to crop an image, anything more is usually a waste of flash memory.
Sorry- I've only got one- SONY's RM-VL900 learns with the best of 'em.
This is not the whole story.
I, too, have this remote control and, while it does an adequate job of controlling everything, it does not provide for a "wife proof" interface. To be fair, I should replace "wife proof" with "non-techie proof" or something like that - but I won't.
For example, if I want to watch a DVD, then I have to press:
- TV, power (TV powers on) - DVD, power (DVD powers on) - AMP, 8 (which flips the receiver to the DVD input)
But WAIT! The instructions are different if the TV is already on. The complexity is MIND boggling. I will give ALL OF MY MONEY to someone who can fix the problem. And before everyone suggests CURRENT PRODUCTS, don't - because I've tried them all.
I've tried to install Firefox several times in the past few months only to uninstall it because it locks up at various sites (notably slashdot).
Maybe Opera?
It has gotten to the point where I have to boot Knoppix in order to do anything secure.
the first post guys will go bankrupt!

payment = (user_karma / total_karma_issued)*(revenue - expenses)
This would be a *real* OSS commentary site.

What we NEED, and I mean REALLY NEED, is the ability to get HDTV from sources we int he real world actually USE
1) Buy this card.
2) Buy IR mouse.
3) Watch HDTV from satellite or cable
4) Profit
We'll need some good software, first. It should only be a matter of time before Myth or one of the others gets good support for this.

It is basically a phone with an ethernet port and SIP built in. Not bad.
Unless the Australian government has jurisdiction in foreign countries, this has the same affect as spam laws:
The assholes just relocate to another country.
I agree.

I always like to joke that this book should have been called: RTFM: Raid - The Fucking Manual
