    Heh. I was a hunter at one time and I am a vegetarian now. The one thing you'll probably never see vegetarians do is get together on opening morning of the hunting season to knock back a few drinks and then pile into a car with a bunch of lethal weapons (not to mention the car).

    I actually believe that hunting is good for thinning the herd. After all, we an afford to do without so many hunters....

    Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to why speed really matters in these cases. Can you really tell the difference between a .18 second return and a .97 second return once you account for varying connection speeds, internet traffic, etc? Is speed really a relevant criterion? Obviously I'm missing something.

    Jounalists should be REQUIRED to master highschool level science. Otherwise they are a social hazard.

    And science/engineering related majors should be required to minor in sociology/psychology. Otherwise they are a social hazard. Yes, it's always the other professions that need regulating, isn't it?

    Isn't it funny how people in other professions are just plain wrong while people in your profession are well informed and insightful?

    Isn't it odd how everyone else is an idiot while you're full of understanding about the world?

    Isn't it interesting how all journalists are wrong and that anyone sitting behind a computer has more insight into what's right all the time?

    Yes, journalists make mistakes. Probably not as often as you think. On the other hand, perhaps they make mistakes as often as programmers do. Journalists also have incredible restraints, such as time or column inch limitations in which to get the idea across. Yes, it's good to be skeptical and I've seen inaccurate portrayals of things I know about as well, but by and large the reportage of tech issues I've seen in the mainstream has been reasonably on target.

    Yep. I just got a Treo600, which replaced my cellphone and my trusty old Palm Vx. At first it was a little weird realizing I'd never "write" on my Palm again, but after several seconds I got over it. The keyboard is better for me, but it is tiny and takes some getting used to.

    Plus, there is little reason to pull out the stylus most of the time (I only use if for old apps that aren't fully navigable under OS 5) and that makes for better usability in my opinion. I looked at the Nokia home page and in the demo it shows using a stylus to scroll sideways on a web page. No, thanks.

    Still, technologically it's got some very cool features, just not what I'm looking for.

    Creationism is a myth.

    Now, hold on a minute. The poster should not have gotten modded flamebait for this. Religious ideas of creation are myths, but people get so touchy about it because it their myth. What about the myth of earlier cultures who believed that a god created a giant turtle and that the world is riding on the back of it? Perfectly valid as long as you're going to ignore scientific reasoning and evidence.

    There's nothing wrong with myths, by the way. They just have no place in the rational part of our world.

    The subject of this story is not stealing access. I have, however, seen a guy parked outside a Starbucks offering internet access for $1/hour. Not exactly the path to riches given the number of potential sales it looked like he could make there. His car was bristling with antennas and when I asked him about the it he came right out and said that he was using the Starbucks wi-fi access. I only saw him there once, but I was amazed he was able to stay there as long as he did.

    Plus, I wonder about whether or not he was harvesting information from people hooking up.

    So, are you telling me that unlike in the 70's inspectors at nuclear building sites are no longer having their lives threatened if they don't automatically approve the construction?

    I realize that Slashdot is not the place to peddle this idea, but what's wrong with a little civility? Of course you have a right to free speech, but why does free speech always have to be so coarse? Too much Sopranos?

    The zeal for "free speech" takes us in a race to the bottom, which is fine for you, but I would like for other people to show me a modicum of consideration in public speaking and writing. Using your favorite expletives is much more fun for you than it is for those around you.

    You may think it's cool to say such words around chilren, but let me remind you that chilren are not small adults, they are going through development phases and have way different sensitivities. In fact, they have sensitivities, a concept you might not be familiar with.

    So lighten up. Bringing a bit more civility into language does not mean being a prude, nor does it mean censorship. Your post was not insightful, it was merely a juvenile rant.

    I don't think the parent is a troll. It IS the only liberal democracy in the region (look it up, liberal does not mean what you think it means in the case). The Muslims don't hate us because we're supporting Israel, that's just a convenient excuse. They hate us because of our Western way of thought and of doing things. Plus, we are no different to them than their own Arab royalty, who are oppressing the hell out of their own people. They see us as in cahoots with the Arab royalty, and they'd be right.

    Not that I want to see the Arab royalty replaced by fundamentalist Islamists.

    It's hard for me to imagine cheating on a coding project (or anything else, for that matter). I've gone back for a second degree after many years out and I'm taking all that math I avoided the first time around. I do not like the math so much, but I'm putting on my game face.

    I feel like I'm taking more math than CS so when I get into a CS class it's just plain fun. If you have to cheat at something that is your major, for crying out loud, what are you doing in that major?
