It's not about not making mistakes, it's about bad habits being formed. Of course we're going to make mistakes starting out, but this is about avoiding the mistake of forming harmful habits.
We cement our knowledge by doing hands on programming and working out problems, but we have to learn from someone/something in the first place, otherwise we'd be always reinventing the whole process.
When I saw Fisher my mind went immediately to Fisher-Price. Yes, completely different, but does anyone else remember that Fisher-Price actually made a video camera at one time? It was called the Pixlevision and recorded to audio cassettes! The quality was poor, but just poor enough to look really cool. As I recall, they didn't stay on the market long.
we'll never be able to produce something to completely replace the human element.
Depends what you mean by human element. Kurzweil is making the case that we are producing the next step in the evolutionary process by creating machines (computers) that are increasingly complex and fast. If you look at the whole of evolution progress has been exonential, with each successive milestone being reached more and more quickly.
When computers become as complicated as the human brain they will be able to "evolve" on their own, without the need of humans, and evolution will continue at a breakneck pace.
My apologies if this generalization is overly simplified. I'm only part way through the book as it is, but it's fascinating.
Perhaps this is the point entirely. It's possible that they looked at the Mac and thought, "hey, these guys are selling stuff based on nothing more than cool factor, so let's design something that looks hip and cash in on the market."
If indeed that's what they were thinking--and judging from the price v. specs I'd say that was the case--they missed the whole point of the Mac, which is more than fancy hardware. It's also about all the rest of things that Mac users already know about, such as great hardware plug-and-play reliability, solid OS and software that makes the machine instantly useful even to newbies.
Well, ceramics are generally made by forming something (such as clay) and then subjecting it to high heat. Glass, on the other hand, comes out of high heat and is formed before it cools down.
Yes, this is funny, but if you have a moment be sure to fill out those forms with some bogus info while you're at it. There's no reason their data should be clean.
The Wikipedia lists you as a part-time advisor for Blue Origin, a company that is working to "develop a crewed, suborbital launch system." What is it that you do for them and has the recent winning of the X-Prize by the Spaceship One team had any effect on Blue Origin's plans? What are your visions of future private space flight?
For me, that's way too much to pay for either a phone OR a PDA
But it's NOT a phone or a pda. It's both. Yes, I'll definitely give you that it is pricey. Having just recently received one as a gift I didn't have to know the pain of the outlay, but I will say that it is sweet getting rid of an old phone that I hated and now having to carry around one less device. I really like the Palm OS and the Treo600 as a phone is about a hundred times better than the ancient Motorola V120 that I had.
What's unsettling is that once a meme becomes widely distributed it is accepted. I looked over that party platform and it looked like something from some whack-job fringe group:
We believe the environment is best served by individuals working in their own best interest.
Uh huh.
We believe that the taking of property should follow with immediate compensation to the property owner.
Yep, unless you happen to be wanting to build a stadium for the Texas Rangers. Notice that they didn't specify "appropriate compensation."
I think you may have misunderstood me. In fact, I'm on board with everything you wrote. In my own inept way I was trying to point out that your post was not really a troll at all. Great post, by the way. Welcome to my friends list.
I'm not sure the parent poster is a complete troll. What's happening is that companies who are used to profiting may no longer be profiting so much, so they get laws passed that in effect say "you WILL watch my advertising." The free market be damned except when it fits their needs. If everything is about privatization and free enterprise don't be surprised when the people with the money do everything they can to get more of it. And no, this isn't some kind of defense of Socialism.

What about the intake? You'll be in big trouble the moment you suck somebody into your turbine.

Actually, that's pretty funny. I'm sure most Slashdot readers are too young to remember this.

His kid lost out.
That's awesome, but given the subject matter of the article it should have been to the tune of something by Rush. :-)
I think people say this to justify their own low prices. It's a way of not feeling bad or guilty because you can lump everybody else in with you.
How old are your kids, and which R and NC17 movies will you allow them to rent?
So, is that quids pro sco then?
Consider getting a ceramic thumb. :-)

No kidding. Put one in me now! And while you're at it, you might as well install a heart plug.

Which book was the character "ad infinitum" in?
I'd love to hear the responses even if this question doesn't get picked. Would you consider making a journal entry later?

I guess we can deduce how you feel about politicians then.
Actually, it looks more like 31%.

Please click on those links and read the articles. The conclusions are not what you wrote.
