Unfortunately... no. There are way to many ignorant users running outdated hardware. Believe me, it pisses me off to no end as a web developer, to still have to test IE6, although Prototype has cleared up most of the problems. Its been like 3 years, upgrade your damn browser!
Currently, our webserver is set up to display messages to IE 5 users that they cannot browse our site, and it blocks all the content. I really hope that IE6 makes that list soon.
Doesn't mean they won't. I know a couple managers, and frankly you are sticking your neck out if you make a couple of bad hires. What is to stop someone from snooping on your myspace/facebook (other than privacy settings) from their own home.
It all comes down to what has been said before, if you don't want the world to know, don't put it on the internet. Its the reason why I discontinued facebook, because quite frankly, I find it rather advantageous to be mysterious ( especially with women;) ).
I'd maintain a database of all writing assignments submitted by a student over their college career. I remember an assignment in my CSCI classes that used an algorithm based on Euclidean distances and a count-table for each word to compare documents, so even using a simple metric would probably work well.
Since this method would be based on vocabulary, studying for tests like the GRE vocab section may through it off, since someone could conceivably rapidly change their vocabulary, and through off the system.
I think the best way to end plagiarism is a very visible deterrent. If you are submitting all your assignments into a database, which does some checking that is transparent (publicly scrutable), it would probably be a very fair and viable deterrent.
still should be a tort crime (civil), rather than a police matter. Regardless of whats said, can't go to college? Become a cop! You'll be a big man then.
How can you honestly be a fan of scheme? The language is elegantly simple, however implementing anything non-trivial becomes a real pain. Error messages are extremely cryptic, and changes to complicated code often result in mismatched parens.
I'm curious, have you every attempted to develop anything complex with scheme?
Green tea has helped me reduce my previously epic caffeine requirements. You can find flavored tea with less than 25 mg caffeine, which increases mental alertness without making me jittery. I also drink Tazo organic chai in the morning, because it a coffee-like taste, and it gets me moving.
Compulsive coffee drinking is a side-effect of being over-worked, mentally exhausted, and still having a mountain of work. I know I can't make it through the occasional 18+ hour work-day without it.
Umm IIRC, Nash Equilibrium is not really a method for "social analysis". Its been years since I've had a course that covered it, but I remember it being the foundation of the Minimax algorithm.
It sounds like you are recalling the hollywood definition of Nash Equilibrium, which was a very simple analogy.
I don't think the CIO's lack of understanding is caused by her being a "business type". Fact is, unless you've been knee-deep in the code for the system in question, you probably have a very skewed understanding of the time requirements.
Case in point, a client of mine was a PhD/MD. Definitely a nerd, not a business type. He has programming skills, yet he expects me to be able to accomplish 20+ hours of coding in an hour. He simply doesn't understand the amount of thinking, experimentation, design, coding and testing involved for modern web-apps.
More relevant case in point, my boss has a PhD in computer science. About 10 years ago, he was a programmer just like me, but now he runs big-numbers for the business types. He has been nagging me about current project to be done, because back when he was a web developer, everything was server-side CGI. No CSS prettiness to worry about, limited cross-browser issues, and there was no cluster-fuck codebase to wrestle with. If he gave 2-shits about being a better manager, he'd ask "what sort of problems are you having/expecting", rather than "is it done yet?", and then telling me to hurry up to create bug-free code (pfffft what an oxymoron).
Fact is, every manager I have ever had in a technical position has been woefully out-of-touch with the nitty-gritty of their subordinate's work. Whether or not that person had substantial computer/technical background is irrelevant, because they don't understand the specifics of the system/project in question.
Or learning German a century ago if you wanted to be a scientist / mathematician. English is the lingua franca, so if you want a job in the technical/scientific field, you almost need to understand it. Maybe in another century, everyone will understand written Chinese.
Apple computers are like name brand clothes. You pay a premium for the perceived/real value of increased quality. Apple products are also cool. This is why they can support storefront operations where companies like Gateway fail. They wanted to charge me $200 to install 2 gigs of RAM into my mini; the cost to them is probably around $40 (including install-time). The sad part is I would pay it if I had the money, rather than futzing with a putty knife.
Microsoft if going to lose a ton of money, they do not have a unique product to sell. Everyone else already sells their stuff.
Paraphernalia or marijuana in the passenger compartment, along with suspicion of intoxication is enough to lose your license for 30 days in Minnesota. Typically, an eye-tracking test can be used to determine if someone is severely intoxicated on marijuana, although if the test recipient knows what the officer is looking for (shaking eyes), I believe the test can be beaten (I have beaten it, although I was drunk).
Marijuana possession over 1 ounce should be illegal, however the government should sell weed it seizes. Make selling it illegal. People will still continue to produce it, but the government will reap the profits.
Better yet, keep your mouth shut as much as possible. There are only a few identity related questions you must answer (IIRC: social, name, provide license/insurance/registration), and be sure not to slur them. DUI units have dashcams, so if you are recorded sounding/looking drunk, that can be used as evidence.
As a side note, officers without cameras or breathalyzers use an eye tracking tests for field testing sobriety. Jumpy eye movements while tracking an object are a sign of alcohol/drug intoxication.
you drive a 2007 Lexus GS 450, ~ 50,000 - 60,000 dollars, and you spelled "alone" wrong. You bitch about the direction this country is going in, yet you partake in the excesses of consumerism like most people can only dream. You seem to know it all.
I think you are missing my point. Making drugs available to people will make more people do drugs. More people doing drugs means more people will be addicted to drugs. I think you are grossly oversimplifying the situation with "Either you control yourself or you die".
What makes you think that drug users will die quickly? It may take 10 - 20 years. In that time, they will lead a menial existence AT BEST. At worst, they will be severely delinquent members of society, and commit crimes. Either way, that is plenty of time to make babies.
As someone with an addictive personality, I disagree with you. Imagine being a recovering drug addict, walking into Walgreens to get aspirin for a headache, as you are paying for it, you see behind the cashier "ICE BRAND METH $40". You didn't walk into the store to buy meth, but your old addiction starts tempting you. It would be sooo easy to say "and can you grab me some of that meth too". You hesitate... but in a moment of weakness, you buy the meth. You are now again a meth addict.
That is me every time I walk into a convenience store, except with Black and Milds (cigars), instead of meth. The ONLY thing that prevents me from actually buying black and milds, is that it isn't worth it. 2 minutes of escape isn't enough to justify the health consequences. However, if it was meth, and the promise was 8 hours of escape, who the hell knows what I would do. I am just lucky I was exposed to pot and tobacco instead of meth when I was 14.
Drug prohibition is an unfortunate response to human nature. Some people do not get addicted to things. They do not need to escape reality. These are people that drink one beer, play WoW/XBOX live 6 hours a week, etc. But some people are incapable of controlling themselves when it comes to escaping reality. These people will binge and binge and binge on drugs until they die, and cause some really bad things to happen in their communities.
Making drugs readily available is a bad idea. If I wanted to find meth, it would probably take me weeks, or months. I don't even know where to start.
Look up salaries for senior programmers and project managers. Compare to junior programmers. Salaries do not flatten out after 6 years.
Also, computer science is not IT. It is not necessarily software-engineering either. Who says that a woman can't major in CSCI and go into a medical profession. Thats what I'm planning on doing.
Furthermore, you are trolling with your bold statements. Software engineering is fad-prone, but things aren't replaced outright. Object orientation has been around for long time, and it ain't going nowhere.
The Wikipedia article states that in practice more than the first digit is used.
Is this something like a histogram, and increasing the number of digits analyzed gives you a better picture?
actually the word derived from Al-Kawarizi "Algorism". From which we get the word algorithm, sorry to split hairs, but this is slashdot after all =)

umm... you can watch movies in firefox now. You must have missed the memo...

RTFA, its from meta-programming! How else would you write meta-programs to run on GAE in the cloud? Just kidding =).
Although I could be way off, I'd assume it allows end-users of your web-app to script additional functionality onto it.
How can you honestly be a fan of scheme? The language is elegantly simple, however implementing anything non-trivial becomes a real pain. Error messages are extremely cryptic, and changes to complicated code often result in mismatched parens.

computers express everything with mathematics, you read his statement on a computer, therefore his statement was expressed in mathematics.
Its the U.K. spelling you insensitive clod!
Maybe a more appropriate questions is, why should you announce your sexual orientation?

Wait until summer... they'll have a fresh new batch of interns to do some documentation bitch-work =)
