We are currently broadcasting the galactic equivalent of "Eat at Earth" sign. Remember we consume "lesser" lifeforms for food. I do love a good steak! Who knows if the aliens who find Earth will consider us as equals or as appetizers.
I am sure their galactic physicians will recommend they don't eat too many humans from the Northwestern Continent due to cholesterol or something, but that they can eat all the yellow humans from the east they want, even if they will be hungry again in a few parsecs.
How many times have you seen a car with their lights on in a parking lot with nobody in the car?
In the old days, someone would check the doors to see if they were unlocked and turn off the lights for the person to keep their battery from running down.
Would you touch someone else's car today if the lights were on?
... waitress in cofee shop serves coffee to a customer. She thinks he is cute so she asks him out. He replies that he is a gynecologist. She says she is cool with that and they can still go out. He replied that most women don't like dating gynecologist. She asks why? He replies, "Do you want another cup of cofee when you get home?"
If home servers are a commodity, they will not be worth the expense of maintaining them, much like PC's right now.
To diagnose problems with a PC, back up user data, reinstall everything, restore user data is still quite a time consuming task. Usually the cost of this task is greater than the worth of a PC.
Will people sign service agreements, such as with HVAC ( heating/AC ) units, or will they die from slow neglect like many PC's. Are people selling their home going to "brag" about the cool server their house comes with, or will they take their server with them when they move?
If the bandwidth to the home ever reaches a critical level, will people even want a server in the home? Would a simple router/switch/local non-hd based cache appliance be all they need?

You have the basic experience to continue learning, and pass on the relevant parts to your students. Some resources I would recommend are the MIT Opencourseware and the Berkeley Webcast.
These resources provide two similar but different approaches to learning about computers and programming.
It is more simple and straight forward than a higher level language. I taught myself using a free book online, Art of Assembly, and later took the class. The book covers some basics of computers and programming that is useful for many languages. We were required to document each line of code. They recommended that we document as we go, but reading Assembler after the fact and documenting it is no harder than doing the same for C++. Many people consider it their hardest CS course, but I would reserve that label for the advanced automata and lanague theory course.
My father said that coin that people got in change at the train station was so insignificant that people threw them in the corner where they would pile up. He got a few of each kind for the kids.

Whose luck are you measuring, the candidates or yours?
I go through tons of applications looking for qualified people. It would be my luck to discard the one or two who actually know what the position they applied for is.
Gentoo is a trap for the overly technically zealous...
Gentoo was created to keep them out of the "proper" distributions. They will spend the vast majority of their time compling and recompiling their software hoping for that mythical extra 1% of performance that they never get to take advantage of before the next time they recompile.
MySQL has varying levels of support for different versions and architectures.
The linked support list was to the Enterprise version, but check out Cluster and MaxDB versions. Oddly enough, they claim FS - full support for Debian 3.0 on the PowerPC architecture.

I lost my "low number" ID for slashdot a long time ago, and have to make due with this one. *wink*

I don't think the average slashdotter should go around asking females if they smell!
They might not like the answer they get!

The first example of the use of continue made me want to cry!

As I have stated many times before on Slashdot, God and the Big Bang are not mutually exclusive.
See, God invented Mexican food first, and after that, well the Big Bang was pretty much inevitable.
