No. You are way wrong on number two. Our central systems where I work are much, much more secure than most people think. There is a full time person who does nothing but work on security things.
And, we dont packet filter here. We run nfr, yeah.. but the only time we packet filter is when a research group asks for full control of a machine, or in other words, they want us to lose responsibilty of that machines actions.
Then we firewall their machines.
It isn't 'clueless', its about where the 'blame' goes when one gets cracked and sits for weeks unnoticed. If it was to happen to the paid sysadmins, I would fire them on the spot if it were obvious there was a crack.
Ya know, the guy who came up with ringworld and has more ideas about first contact with other species than you can shake a stick at? Him and Pournelle have both packed out so much great texts before their time (look at lucifers hammer sometime) and yet, some of the things they have books on allready are 'new concepts' (read: it became pop).
You forget, some people belive that science and they systems that we peel away are actually a intriciate system setup by God to keep people like us happy.:)
Not like I subscribe to that theory, but billing off religion by saying science exists is not always a valid line of reason.
Just think, all we need to do now is come up with how to make a bussard ramjet and we have all the fuel we need to accelerate all the time to go anywhere.
Probally not exactly the fastest way to get ther ("howd you get here? We left after you in a ship that was thought up of about 14 years after you left. Doh!") But it could be the first step to intergalatic conquest.
I spoke with him over the phone last week on this topic and he told me that Sigma Designs was the company he was talking about. I therefore emailed Sigma Designs, asking when their drivers will be out, yadda yadda.
Oh well. At least he was willing to tell me where to look.
Uh. The FCC is no longer screwing. As of sometime last year the proper laws were passed to allow for local TV on DBS systems. Problem is, DBS is too much of a narrowband communication to handle *everyones* local shows. Get a decent antenna or get cable again if your gonna beef about it. Mediaone out here is better than dish anyhow since the digital services are on.
So, the moral is, slashdot needs to research. IMAGINE THAT!
I recently got a Linux server and Windows 2000 clients working with TNG.14. I am amazed at how well it works even though TNG msrpc is only really NT 4.0 support.
I figured out how to get the w2k clients into compat mode (because all authencated users no matter what from a nt4 doman become 'User'), but, is there an effort to get w2k domain groups working at all? Is there a hack to get it to work?
Also, I thank you and all of the Samba Team for releasing such a solid product. Samba itself is a great asset to opensource developent and my personal goals to avoid dealing with CALS.
The thing is. Metering only hampers people doing legitimate work. Plus, it requires hardware that many higher-edu people dont have. (thank god the people here do.)
QoS cant save the fact that the new traffic pattern would have cost this certain higher education instution lots and lots of money and affecting my tuition bills.
The issue is economies of limited data transfer bandwidth in a shared network environment.
Where I go to school, we have full ATM switched core (or at least thats my understanding). Theres an OC3c to the net, along with a vbns connect (with another oc-12 to vbns coming soon).
Thing was... napster traffic was using 30% of the bandwidth available. To support this new traffic would have cost millions more on the OC3c connect to the internet. Probally eating out of state and federal funds, alongside higher tuition costs. Just so some bastard can get his/her britney spears music and porn.
Why should I fund their abusive network saturating connectivity? Why do you turn sysadmins into the enemy when the real enemy is the economics of scarce bandwidth?
In any case. There will allways be a method to block these products from saturating internet and vbns lines. Why tell people otherwise? If anything, you make it even more of a priority to start blocking SYN traffic unless someone has specifically asked to run services on their machines.
"Am I making myself painfully clear? I thought so."
I bet they can't release the compiler because of IP issues within the compiler. That seems to be the number one reason of legacy software not being able to be released to public.
Malda: Not everyone has to go opensource. I think you need a little action with the clue-by-four.
Everyone knows this is all about server51. sourceforge.org is to become the nexus of opensource... With server51 in the picture, they saw an opportunity where there could be competition, not cooperation. I think that the server51 dudes and sourceforge dudes will be hooked up and all will be good.
I dont think server51 had the hardware resources VA had. Just think.... the sourceforgenetwork. A whole ton of "mini" sourceforges that differ in setup and stuff like that. Heh.. perhaps not
A) I also agree that slashdot is a great place for things that aren't news, but about discussing things that could exist or would be a good thing to exist.
B) I also agree that there needs to be some sort of idle-cycle eater.
Check out where the project is headed. They have a mostly done CPU/OS abstraction layer, and a utility layer is just coming into the works.
It is going to sport a neat OpenGL interface and should completely blow away anything else near it. Just think distributed.net with the flexibility to say that you want to be looking at the stars today, instead of rendering some feature film, or helping out with genetic stuff, or perhaps even a little crypto breaking. Or, make your own project, have it do all the fun stuff.
But the CPU/OS layer can work for anything. When the gui is done it could be used for many more projects than just cosm...
Do you know what these "free" ISP's do? What if they started doing profiles on customers and sold this data to a ton of companies. Lets say that one is some crackpot doctor! He goes up and contacts everyone with so-and-so-disease and offers a cure for 20k$ and rips them off, or worse yet, misleads them into it. and if they didn't fall for that, pesters them with telemarketing every day. Totally legal because they consented to it. Well, not the stealing money part... but the rest of it.
Do you want a corp. knowing more about yourself than your mother does?
The DVD algorithms that were found through some clever hacking were not found by rummaging through propretary documents or other blackops means, but through working with software. The software that they aquired the "method of decryption" from was not found illegally in the country it was found. That technology then was legally exported into the united states. These methods are pretty boring and were quickly incorprated into some nice pieces of software. Wheres the lawsuit, oh yeah, the DVD people DONT WANT YOU TO beable to use the technology yourself. That would give the consumer some rights to a product that could the copied and *gasp* pirated.
Sorry DSS guys, it was too late when you released the format.
Whowa. wheres the cave you live in?
BTW, the labels were accused of pricefixing and recently settled with the Justice dept.
HellO? brain in there?

Hrm.
Awwwyeah.
;) I don't think about dyson spheres much because like.. uh. their infeasibilty when the ringworld is much more practical. :)
:)
Heh. oh yeah. dyson.
I agree with LA too

Aggg.
Way to go, now I can reload slashdot even faster during the day. :)

Hello!

Where can I send [postcards,pizza,beer,etc]?
The thing is. Metering only hampers people doing legitimate work. Plus, it requires hardware that many higher-edu people dont have. (thank god the people here do.)
The point is not QoS.
QoS cant save the fact that the new traffic pattern would have cost this certain higher education instution lots and lots of money and affecting my tuition bills.
The issue is not the free flow of information.
The issue is economies of limited data transfer bandwidth in a shared network environment.

Its a Disney logo in disguise! check here AHHHHH!
I bet they can't release the compiler because of IP issues within the compiler. That seems to be the number one reason of legacy software not being able to be released to public.
Malda: Not everyone has to go opensource. I think you need a little action with the clue-by-four.
No.
Bleem fakes windows out to get 'ring-0' access via an 'exploit' of a core dll.
All you gotta do is make windows slightly more secure and bleem will need to recode.
Heck, did anyone else see Nano Logo and think--
:)
WHAT!?! They got a LOGO intrepreter to interact with a nanotech device?!?!
Could you imagine the little bugger thinge booping around to some logo commands? Whoops, did I just put that one up your nose?
Everyone knows this is all about server51. sourceforge.org is to become the nexus of opensource... With server51 in the picture, they saw an opportunity where there could be competition, not cooperation. I think that the server51 dudes and sourceforge dudes will be hooked up and all will be good.

Perhaps there will be skinning of sourceforge
Have a good one out to Andover and VA.
I dont think that having another woman as a relationship is such a biggie for Bill.
Remember, at the last Comdex he brought a microsoft staffer to dance with him instead of his wife. (!?) She must be at home 'with the kids'.
Theres some insight for ya.
A) I also agree that slashdot is a great place for things that aren't news, but about discussing things that could exist or would be a good thing to exist.

Hence: cosm

Um. this belongs on freshmeat. whomever thinks this belongs on slashdot also like katz and loves the way kewl shit thats been on here lately.
What happened to the "old" but cool slashdot?

I would totally love to buy a copy on video, or a realaudio/mpeg file of this would be totally appreciated!
