  1. Re:they haven't even fixed 6.1 yet! on SuSE 6.2 in August · · Score: 1

I used kpackage's "replace package" option, which is good enough on other rpm-based distros(RH6, COL 2.2) to replace or upgrade the rpms and not mess up the database. I'm not sure if I'm correct in explaining it, but SuSE doesn't include some certain headers in their rpm's. Annoying.

One thing I hope they fix is their totally wacked-out RPM handling. In 6.1, the rpm's don't sort out into trees, if you install over an earlier version of a package, you'll have both packages listed in your database, instead of one overwriting the other(this was with kpackage). To top it off, they name packages like "kernel.rpm" instead of a more descriptive and handy "linux-kernel-2.2.7-i386.rpm"

Well, their lead underwriter isn't exactly a bulge-bracket white-shoe firm. While other tech or dotcom companies have benefited from the publicity of Wall Street news coverage (Amazon or eBay anyone?), I think Be's IPO will be very quiet.

Aside from the legal issues of whether Creative was violating its license agreement for the API, 3dfx's lawsuit can also block further development or releases on the Unified drivers, as long as the case remains tied up in court. 3dfx doesn't need to win, they just need to stall, because by the time this issue is resolved, the next generation of 3D accelerators will be out.

  8. DNA...bleh on DNA Encryption · · Score: 1

Hmm, I don't see much use in DNA as a message carrier. You can't artificially synthesize more than a few hundred base pairs at most, and even Nature's best polymerases can't do more than a few million without making a mistake. Nor is it possible to use PCR to amplify a message of more than few thousand base pairs. Reading the message, by means of a sequencer, will also be a slow and painstaking process.

I've got 5 machines running Seti, and I've noticed too that many of the packets seem the same. But even with the same packets, it seems to be reporting different highest signal strengths and Gaussians. Of course, this is merely suspicion.

Aren't some of these features already in place in some software? Someone from another dept came to me the other day blaming someone in my dept. for pirating their Adobe Photoshop. On her Mac, she couldn't run Photoshop because it detected another copy with the same serial number in use on the network. What friggin BS(and why I hate Macs), and we're supposed to have a site license for it.

All this software at work we have site licenses for, but it's all for Macs. So I do a little "borrowing" for the Win95 software I need.

  12. Shoutcast --ph3aR on AOL acquires WinAMP, Spinner, SHOUTcast · · Score: 2

Who cares about WinAmp? Winamp is to mp3 like Redhat is to Linux. Besides, it has a crappy hard-to-read UI and only one good plugin (Cthugha) . The thing to be more concerned about is ShoutCast. The potential of this technology, along with it's current distribution model, makes it an awesome thing to behold. Will they leave it alone, start charging site licensing fees? Buy up the makers of mp3spy (and as a result, Gamespy 3D), and stick AIM in for the chat feature?

AOL's history with acquisitions so far is "don't touch a good thing" (and this is an actual quote from somewhere).
