    Hi,

Good point and I'm not against other licenses. My point was that there are already dozens of open source compliant licenses. Why not use one of those? I personally favor the GPL, but that's just my preference, which is why I added that additional statement.

  2. License madness on Microsoft, OSI Discuss Shared Source Licenses · · Score: 3, Interesting

Why is it necessary for every podunk company to create their own freakin' 'open source' license. There are already many to choose from, just use an existing one? Why reinvent the wheel and make it even more confusing for people to use your lame-ass software.

People are worried about Linux 'forking' into multiple incompatible systems (like UNIX supposedly did). I'm more worried about the assinine growth in 'OSL-compliant' licenses.

Can't we all just use the GPL or LGPL?

Since I work with many people who *still* have not switched to Open Office, I tend to export my OO files into PDF. At least I preserve my formatting much better than if I save as MS Office formats [filtering is better in OO 2.x I'm told].

PDF is also useful for sending read-only stuff like contracts or proposals - if you're the consultant types.

Now that Adobe updated Acrobat, maybe some of the more recent PDFs will be more renderable in Linux.

Put in a GTK or QT library interface instead of the slow and huge Swing (that Smalltalkers foisted on Java) and you're golden -- there's every reason to use Java, especially for applications.

Well, given that Swing sucks and it's the main toolkit supplied with Java (unless you want AWT, which is even more primative), you answered your own question -- more Linux developers don't write java apps because the GUI toolkit is feature-prohibitive, compared to QT or (gasp) GTK+.

Alas, if it were only that simple. See, when you're a CEO type (even the reprehensible type like Sr. McBride) you have an employment contract. Typically, those contracts include the amount of the 'golden parachute'.

If another company were to buy SCO, they accept the liability of all *existing* SCO employment contracts as part of the takeover. The new company could tell Sr. McBride to get bent, but he would have a *valid* cliam to get what his contract specified (plus damages). The rationale is that from the employees point of view, he is owed what's in his contract whether or not the company ownership changes hands.

Really, the only way you could screw him is *not* fire him, but demote him to IBM executive shoe shiner and force him to quit. Wouldn't that be nice?

Hard-core Linux users may like GNU Cash. I certainly support the GNU project and I am grateful that GNU Cash is a viable alternative. But, if you have been using MS Money or Quicken, you probably will feel more comfortable using MD, especially 2003.

Another bonus for MD is that it is a Java application, so it will run on *any* platform. So, if you are still a dual-boot Linux/Windows user (why?), you can run MD on either one and not have to reboot simply to balance your checkbook.
