    The kernel is not written in pure C, even though it's portability would make you think so. It is writen in C with a ton of GNU extentions. So the kernel is really tied to gcc. (which actually makes it more protable because gcc runs on a ton of machines)

    OC is probably considered a suburb of LA becasue it really has no metroploitan center. People still don't understand thought that it is really a world unto itself. You really do have just about every culture and every level of income here in OC.(except for seemingly absent african americans) I just get sad when the rest of the world thinks that South county is all that we are. (a stereo-type usually propagated by people _from_ south county) This post originates from Garden Grove (where I have been all of my life) so I think that I have gotten the OC experience.

    I think I might get shot down on this one, but the main reason to switch to ogg is political. While mp3 is "free" to us now, it might not be in the future. I think ogg is just a proactive strike to attempt to prevent anther gif fiasco. (not that people care about that either)

    Not to nit-pick but rieserfs has been in the kernel since (i think) 2.4.4. (and ext3 in 2.4.16)

    Please do not make it sound as if the freeze was some sort of ultimatium. The "woody" freeze has been planned for quite some time now and it is a shame that this was found so close to the freeze. (and believe me, the freeze cannot be delayed any more)

    "Rabid fanaticism", they are just shifting part of the package where it belongs if it isn't in agreement with the DFSG. If Debian were as rabid as avertised then there wouldn't even BE a non-free. I do agree with the politics comment though, but I think that "chest thumping"is just the price you pay for community development. (Problem with humans, not Debian)

    I don't think that they are being dropped:

    So please people, Debian does give you a choice!(non-free) They just want to give the users the convience of _KNOWING_ that the main system is completely _FREE_.

    the preX patches are applied against the last releases source. ex.

    2.4.15-pre5 is applied against 2.4.142.4.15-pre6 is also applied against a virgin 2.4.14

    I think that www.bzimage.org has some incremental patches though, but I have never used them.

    This really doesn't seem like a UI enforcement issue. The guy who got in trouble was (i think) just developing skins/themes for non-apple environments (which would make direct useage of apple libs a problem) . Really all of the half-assed interfaces are already there. :) I guess that he was just trying to make them look pretty .

    I think that really RMS is just acting like an overprotective father/mother. Look, this man gave up a significant portion of his life hoping to raise a project that shares his morals/beliefs. Then one day corperate america rides up on their shiny new hog and begins to make the project wonder if "daddy" was right. I really feel for RMS, to put all of that work into a project, only to be ditched and ridiculed once the project hits the big time.

    seriously, why does the majority's immorality have to effect the way we view software. I will admit the the FSF/OSI bickering isn't really helping anybody, but we really cannot knock sombody just because the actually HAVE moral conviction. I really do not want Free Software to be LIKE Microsoft, and to tell you the truth I don't really care if it dominates the world. I am getting really sick of everbody on /. acting as if there is some kind of WAR that has to be won. I use it for the same reason most people use linux, because it is a system that satifies my natural curiosity. It is a system that gives me the freedom and the ability to gain knowledge w/o having to worry about Non-disclosure agreements and the DMCA.Finally, it gives me the satifaction that I can have a fully functional computer without having to deprive the rights of a single person. (I know that most people don't care, but I do)

    Before a year or two ago *nix was the only systems doing high performence 3D and SGI still pretty much rules the roost in the 3D workstation market. All of this was done with X, so it really isn't the fact that X cannot support 3D it is the fact that XFree86 has had little to no support from the card manufactures themsleves. That is the ONLY reason that windows has such great device support. I think that we all have forgotten that linux and most of it's programs were done on a volunteer basis w/o the healp of any corperate entity, and while it is much more difficult I can say that I like the feeling that it is MY OS and I (people like me) can controll its direction. So please it is fine if you have a different philosophy than I, but that is not reason to bash the significant strides that the people have made.

    That anything that could actually stand the test of time really will not appeal to the majority of the people who are looking. I have been really dissapointed at the selection at my local and not-so-local public libraries. It seems like most wast mo0ney on the hot new (at least at the time) trendy books that are REALLY dated and never have the books that are older and well respected. Anyway here is my vote:

    (forgot the author) - SICP (structure and interpretation of computer programs)

    Comer, Douglass - Internetworking with TCP/IP (This one just kept me glued to it for some reason)

    Kernighan and Ritchie - The C programming language (really the most unsexy comp book but it is really good)

    Deitel & Deitel - C++ How to Program (not really the most heady book, but I think that it is the best of the "beginner" books. It even has all of those neat buzzwords like UML and Object-Orientated to pull the readers to it)

    Knuth - Art of Computer Programming vol I-III (just to push the vote over the top, I will be a happy man the day that I can understand the firt chapter but I am getting there)

    Like one of the other people who replied to you post, a buisness IS composed of people. This is really not the entire point though. The whole economy (and subsequently people's existance) is a complex interaction between consumers(people),employees(people), and employers(people). So in the situation you acclaim as ideal, you will be posting tomorrow about either that "these damn corperations are charging too damn much for their product", or that they have move out of this country. I really do not apologize for buisness, I really do not even like the way that America is corperate centered, but that is the way it is. I really do not have any anwsers on how to create even a good economy (for all people), greater people than I have spent their entire lives on this and have failed.

    Linux has traditional been a techies operating system. That being the case the IT guys (who use gnu/linux at home) would just install linux without going through the standard excutive process (which would have probably not allowed linux on the network). Well linux gained it's reputation by siletly doing the work, I THINK that is what he was talking about.

    One of the point in this statement stated that this would free us from depending on existing architectures. Sure but this revolution would just put us in the hand of one company instead of the few that are there today. This really doesn't seem like any kind of freedom, does it?

    This is absolutly amazing, especially since just about everybody has already explained that it is compliant with the GPL and therefore is WHAT OPEN SOURCE IS ALL ABOUT. If you buy a CD then you can get the source. If you cannot wait go and download Apache and look at the source I do think that it is a bit of PR suicide though. The only thing that saves them is that there is basically no comp. on PPC for them to worry about.

    apt is not analogus with rpm (rather, dpkg is the packaging tool), you can actually use apt w/ rpm (connectiva is doing this)

    I know that there isn't a ton of money in advertising, but I think that is why they do not want unauthorized clients connecting to their service. From what I remember there were banner ads on the Win client, but I could be mistaken. I still really don't understand why they are try that hard though, ther more people that can communicate on their servers the more people's friends (who don't use linux) will use AOL/AIM. I really do think that people should really start using jabber. Who know mabye AOL would have to include jabber support if it were popular enough.

    WHOA!!! WHAT'S WRONG WITH NAMBLA!?! First of all, NAMBLA in no way you garden variety gay/lesbian organization. I have no problem with an organization like glad, which promoted gay/lesbian rights. But seriosly, there has to be a cuttoff point where things are just plain out illegal. MAN->BOY != MAN->MAN. I do not have all of the answers but isn't there a point that ,as a society, we can say that somthing is wrong and shouldn't be supported (Once again I am more speaking about actions rather than just thougth)

    Just trolling around, but maybe Mr.Bourne (or the author of the orig. shell) should sue them for using SH. C'mon that's pretty confusing. I might think that Mr. Bourne was involved in cryptography. (which is evil, right?) :)

    The only trouble with that logic is that you still get sub standard software fro less-that-popular platforms. This is probably just a lag due to the fact that the 2.4.x release was kind of pushed out the door. Were only at 2.4.1, give it some times to stablize on the i86 hardware then the patches should be integrated. Before we start thinking that this is a silent platform war, and if it is then "fork-away" and everything will be ok. Still the "comercial motive theory" kills platforms quicker than anything. (there is no M$ software for MIPS,ALPHA(anymore),etc..)
