"Has it ever occured to them to consider that we just don't want to buy the crap they're selling?"

I'm a "leech" and proud of it. I filter ads on the net, change the station on the radio when ads come on, and record tv shows onto CD with my linux box and fast-forward over the ad breaks.

    Why do I do it?

Even if I would want to buy an advertised product, I do not want to know about it. Let me explain:

I am more happy before than after seeing any advertisement. If I don't want it, I'm annoyed at the waste of 30 seconds of my precious life. If I do want it, I will subsequently desire an object that I do not have, which will make me less happy until I possess it.

I could buy the object, but I know from experience that (1) New Stuff does not keep you happy for more than a week, then it occupies space and uses up your time and (2) You can buy tech goods cheaper if you wait a month or two.

I may miss the next big product that I can't live without, but, until I see the advertisement, I am happy to remain ignorant of it's existence. If I need something, I will look for it and buy it if I find it.

Sure I'm selfish, but that's the Capitalist Lesson, isn't it?

How are you going to make Johannes Q Awerage from Bulgaria host sexyvirgins.com in sexyvirgins.xxx? Honestly, do you have any idea how the net works?

"We don't BAN them from coming into a movie theater building where there's an R movie playing on the next screen..or a food store that happens to sell cigarettes and liquor..."

Your analogy, like your logic, has flaws that could be spotted by a six-year-old.

No, we do not ban children from coming to a theatre building where an R movie is being played, BUT we can take children to Disneyland, and part of the appeal of Disneyland is that you can watch Snow White in one cinema without having to walk past another cinema showing ads for Snow White Does Dallas.

Note that you and I are not forced to go to Disneyland. We are not forced to stop our children from going to a normal cinema. However, the world is improved by making this option available, and this option is currently not available on the net.

I just have to put up my hand and say this is a "good thing". Just because Bush is a sock puppet dupe of the high-tech military (which has to test its new weapons in a real theatre of war every ten years doesn't preclude his staff from having the occasional good idea.

If I spend 400 hours writing code for something I want to sell, I'm not gonna give it away. I'm sorry

You're not giving it away, you're selling it. You're selling source code availability as an added extra. It's an added feature that a certain class of consumers will see as a bonus. You can charge more for a product with included source code, with no extra effort on your part.

How often do we have to say "free as in freedom" before people understand? Just because it's software libre does not mean that you can't charge money for it! It's not free as in beer!

The message is clearly not getting through. Let me try again.

You can charge for free software. You can offer the source code, with a price tag attached to it. I can charge you for the source to a software product. You can sell free software. You can license the source code in whatever way you wish, and charge people for the use of the software. A product with source code can be more expensive than a similar product with no source code, because the source code adds value to the product. Programs with source code can be sold to people. Software's value to the customer is improved by having the source code available, and you can charge for this added value. People are willing to pay more money to get your software if the source is included. The cost of software production does not go up, and the price goes up, when the source is included, increasing your profit margin.
