  1. /. on a pipe or router? on 3 Computers in One Case · · Score: 1

doing a traceroute for me shows that very little, but some traffic is making it across the pond, but i can't even ping the www.siamese.co.uk....

  2. spanish/portuguese on RMS to work in "Gates Building"? · · Score: 1

I doubt this is on topic (isn't that just moderator bait? :) ), but just how different are portuguese and spanish? I'm about half fluent in spanish, and its about as difficult to read as a british writer, or something from the mid 1800's...any stats/numbers/etc on just how close they are?

could we start an internet petition and put it on the writer's homepage so that she could show it to a congressperson/senator (they might not get stuff done in washington dc, but they can in their hometowns), and see if the collective power of /. could have some pull?

  5. Babbling morons, that article was! on MP3 Dead? What, Already? · · Score: 1

exactly, this guy is talking about disco, when the subject is the tapes it came on. my car, stereo, walkman (and more if i looked) all have tape players in them, and that format is how old? 20 years? seems like as long as i've been around. as bandwith increases, higher bitrate mp3s will become more common, and this guy will be more wrong. as for pkzip (and gzip, same algorithm), those are alive and well, even with bzip2 around. i bet this guy has a floppy drive in his comp, and there's much better technology out there, but it's amazing how simple things like those can be so useful (like when you build a kernel, and it doesn't boot). anyways, to end my rant, the need for higher compression decreases with the advent of cable, dsl, and other higher speed networking devices.

  6. George W. Bush for president!!! on Trent Lott Invented the Paperclip! · · Score: 1

I must agree...we definitely need a leader who 1) stands for something, rather than taking a poll and seeing what to do (the publcic can't make up their minds ever anyways), 2) one who won't be another dan quayle, and 3) NOT LIE!. that trusting the leader of your country is a good thing, i don't see people talking about the credibility of tony blair or jean chretien (sp?). this is making a joke of the country, and when you have a guy who rents out the whitehouse for campaign funds, that tells me he believes in self before country...

I just love how they can bench non-existant cpu's. If Intel and AMD could do this to create FUD about each other, don't you think they would have done it? I personally take everything that doesn't even have a prototype with a brick of salt (because the grain doesn't do the job for this).

  10. marginally off topic on FreeBSD Updated · · Score: 1

At my work we are going to be deploying a new mail server, serving about 20,000 users, growing to perhaps 30,000 or more. FreeBSD was highly recommended for this task, but I was wondering whether I should use 2.2.8 or 3.0 . This will be a machine open to the world, so security and stability are crucial. Also, what is the user limit for FreeBSD? 64k?
