I was imagining some sort of technical marvel like the Truman Show set with realistic looking sky, sun rays, jungle you could get lost in and most importantly an actual island with water all the way around (i think thats still the definition of an island?). Instead I see something that looks like a cross between a sports hall, a tacky cruise liner and some kind of theme park but without the rides. The whole thing looks very dark and dead, they atleast need retina-burning spotlights or something to hide the ugly structure? The jungle is just a load of trees with a linear zig-zag paved path! and I bet they won't let kids climb the trees for safety reasons, if I was 8 I would be pretty pissed off.

Porting code isnt that hard but often there are big differences to how you do something in one OS vs another and thats made worse if the original program hasn't taken that into consideration and is very much tied to doing things one way. another problem is that hardware support under Linux sucks total dogs balls and then eats the dogs shit and takes 3 days of hard work to then shit out that shit which then stinks of crap. Its not really the Linux community's fault, its just because no-one (manufactures) bothers to do decent Linux support and when they do, its still far lower priority than the Windows support so bugs take longer to get fixed.

Maybe thin clients will replace machines that are only used for basic net, email and word but its most likely they will be running Windows under a very profitable Microsoft licensing system, they're not going to let go of their monopoly that easily and I don't blame them. However anyone who does anything serious with their computers is going to need a good old PC - graphic design, video editing, business applications etc are going to stay local. Seriously, managing your PC isnt that hard, its probably easier than maintaining a car. I use win2k, I started by patching it up and installing a crapy sygate firewall, then I dumped IE and Outlook - all of that could have been done by Microsoft, the PC manufacturer or someone else. Now all I do is click OK to windows update - and even that could be defaulted to auto. Theres really nothing more to it - people can live with getting someone to come and look at their PC if something really major goes wrong, just like taking their car to the garage...

The people who should most fear bandwidth are TV networks.

In some countries you can see when the next bus is comming on your phone. In London we have displays at bus stops that say when the next bus is but it would be so much better to have a map and the current locations of buses on it. In car navigation/traffic jam maps are pretty useless in the city because the jam is _everywhere_. But buses and taxis have priority lanes, I think a million more people would dump their cars and use the bus if they had live bus maps on their phones and bus stops, one of the worst things about taking buses is sitting there waiting for something you can't see because in your mind it takes 10 times longer to come, if there was a map you could atleast watch the dot move slowly towards you. Alas the fairs are going up again (that fucking lair told us he wouldn't) and its all going into a) the pockets of the pigs who now own the buses and b) another 50,000 stupid LCD screens to show crap that no-one wants to see.

  25. Not what you probably think on RIAA/MPAA Contractor Deploys Malicious Adware Trojans · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is pretty old and not a 'binary-payload' issue with WMA files, more of a good old IE flaw. Windows media format has the ability to launch a web-page from a media file (i think it actually forces IE, not your default browser which is a violation of the anti-trust crap). Obviously this is just an instruction in the file and a patch could pretty easily turn it off, once the page is opened (in our favourite browser) the skys the limit. You could also disable this by filtering all windows media files through some program that took out the call, if anyone knows of the program or file format that would be cool?

Obviously no one with any know-how actually uses this format, but sometimes the file you want is in it, just be sure to play WMV/A files offline until you find a patch for Windows media player.
