I have a 667-mhz tibook from november (not the newest one). I had an old airport basestation. The distance between them is maybe 30 feet, and it goes through one non-loadbearing wall (the base is on a shelf in a closet that backs up to my bedroom)

I could turn my tibook a few degrees and go from 2 to 0 bars. I could turn my head and lose reception.

I recently bought a new airport basestation (which supposedly has a better antenna) and got slightly better reception. I changed it to use channel 11 (instead of the default channel 1 or 3?) and that boosted my reception even more.. Maybe the higher frequency waves can get through one wall and travel that 30 feet better than the channel 3 waves.

Since it still drops out, I went out and bought a Linksys basestation. It performed similarly to the new apple station, but was much more complicated to configure, so i took it back.

Now I'm using the airport 2 station, and instead of a quality signal, I just curse a lot.

Let me guess. The fact that I don't know what a TSD is (or how to write one from an FSD, whatever that is) makes me a bad person?

Um, yeah. I worked at a Real Company, for several years doing programming on Real Programs.

I didn't always mix well with the management types. I didn't even know many of them, because knowing them didn't really make me any better at my job. But I think I was pretty good.

The thing is, not everyone is looking to make a zillion dollars (no, really! they're not!). Not everyone is trying to pad their resumes with lame crap in order to pull the wool over some manager's eyes and get a bigger salary.

Some people (get this!) actually LIKE programming. Some people actually LIKE developing cool projects (not products) and putting them out there and saying "hey. i think this is cool. what do you think?" Or "I made this because I needed it. Maybe someone else will find it useful."

Sure that attitude doesn't move you up the corporate ladder. That "well, it won't necessarily improve the bottom line this quarter, but people will think its really cool" frame of mine isn't always well-received in this economy.

Working on an Open Source project allows one the freedom to do what they want, while still building "marketable" programming skille.

Besides, if you're a manager, would you rather hire someone who is kissing your boss's ass and looking for a way to steal your job, or someone who will work hard and produce a quality, innovative product (so you'll look good in front of your boss)?

    Some jobs don't need politics.

Isn't that just a matter of *configuration*? Are the 3 versions of windows fundamentally different, or is it just that Server comes with different base packages, and perhaps different resource settings, than Pro?

*BSD (and Linux) can be configured/optimized for single or multi-user, or tweaked to best (as in perform at its best, not necessarily to do it better than anything else) handle whatever tasks you want to throw at it.

Also, I don't understand why you suggest that responsiveness should be a tradeoff for stability. My desktop FreeBSD machine is responsive AND consistently gives me months of uptime (I have servers that have been up and running without a reboot for over 2 years now!).
The only reasons I've had to reboot have been OS upgrades, kernel rebuild (try THAT on win2000 :), and our fabulous rolling-blackouts (grumble... pg&e... grumble...).

My windows 98 box, on the other hand could go on the order of days (windows 2000 has been much more stable, only having to reboot every couple of weeks).

Why shouldn't someone want to run Redhat right out of the box?

When Apple put out the iMac it came with a 3 step setup manual and a claim of "online in 30 minutes". When I bought one (as a kitchen appliance :), I was happy to discover that it lived up to its claim. I plugged it in, it got its address from the DHCP server on my FreeBSD box and I was up and running in no time.

I was so happy with it that I bought one for my sister and an iBook for my parents. I even got them an Airport (so I could hook into it when I visit ;). If OSX is just as easy, I'll probably upgrade them and administer their machines remotely. It might even make all of those "I can't figure out how to hook up my digital camera" calls a lots less painful.

I don't understand why you, apparently, think Linux should be reserved for the "technically elite". If a person is using the computer for WWW, email and games, why should they care what daemons are running? For that matter, why should they care what OS they are running?

Remember: every one of those "idiots" running RH out of the box means one less idiot running Windows out of the box. (And one more person wanting Linux drivers for their digital camera, or kickass video card, etc).
