AI ran into a series of problems that by their nature couldn't be solved in (reasonable) linear time given the state of the art then. Even Minsky admitted at one point that the field needed more hardware (somputing power) to advance significantly.
IMHO, this is what has been happening. That and subtle (admittedly, not earth-shaking) rethinking of certain classes of problems. Machine learning is probably the best apporach to solving most of these. People aren't born with all the 'common sense' and language skills built in, but they are born with an innate desire to *learn* and the ability to do so.
True, true, true and oh so true. The problem at present is that objectivity has nothing to do with it. Too few businesses (or people) are willing to 'risk' the possibility of being unable to easily share the data generated by said apps.
Note that 'risk' is a perception thing. There are many fine solutions to this preceived issue, but unfortunately almost all require thought. Something the masses are largely unwilling to do.
But you see, you've just made the first classic mistake. It is a business model. They don't HAVE to be fair. They aren't intended to be fair, they are intended to maximixe profit.
Naturally, most companies with this type of approach don't put their policy in a banner ad either...see the above rule about maximizing profit:)
It is possible that they could have altered the approach to favor the wing with the damage. This would NOT have let them land, but might have gotten them low enough to be able to bail out...
This is the classic example of just how/where analog computers are superior to digital ones. The digital computers must be programmed to accomplish the task, but the analog equivalent just does it. The flip side is that a digital computer is more flexible and can be reprogrammged for another task. THe analog one must be rebuilt.
Not that I am convinced the brain is a computer of any sorts. Unless, most people are in a constant state of reboot...
>As opposed to the florida voting fiasco that >made the US look incredibly stupid?
As a demographic, stupid is probably an accurate description for a very large percentage of the population. Anyone who believes otherwise doesn't get out much...oh, right...this is slashdot:)
When first pitched to the networks, Star Trek was described as "Wagon Train to the Stars"...with FireFly they are even trying to hide the analogy. It is a western...not Science Fiction.
Automatic versioning of files is one thing I actually miss from VMS. Certainly not most of the rest of it :)

Mwaaahhhahhhh. We must use this power only for good...right.

Tsk..roughly 40% is spam. Another 50% of the non-spam is crap :)

Perhaps, but life will really suck

Isn't that akin to saying that if you aren't ugly you should walk around nude? Now THAT I think I could get behind.

Uhhh really quickly as they zoom by @ mach 5 on the Tivo?
>Things like this piss off Microsoft to the Nth degree. That rocks!
Which all by itself is motivation enough for them to do it.

Karma? What Karma?
Can we expect someone to boot a linux kernel on it (and get Apache up and running)?
"What's that on your hip?"
"My webserver"
