It was really nice to read such a sincere apology. When newspapers retract things, they usually do it at the bottom of page 20 in 2 point italics, in a manner which shows zero sincerity. This gives a very *good* impression of slashdot as a whole, I think.
Do you have anything to back up your statements, or is this just racism speaking? Space scientists in America after World War II included some prominent ex-nazis from Germany. Does this mean it's hilarious to claim that the space shuttle was developed by US scientists?
I was wondering if anyone has the hardware available to perform the same test on FreeBSD? I suspect that if the test was (MS's fastest OS for the job) vs (The fastest free OS for the job), MS might well lose.
I have heard that you can't go to the top US universities unless you have $30000 to spend on tuition fees. The comment about distribution of wealth is off-topic, and applies in the US as well. If you don't want replies, it would be better not to post a comment in the first place.
I have to say that the post agrees with stuff I've heard from graduates from chinese universities. Also remember that freedom of expression is not perfect anywhere, so maybe *everything* should be taken sceptically.
> What are the chances that this letter originates from the Communist > Party PR department?
It's possible, I suppose, but it agrees with what I've heard from chinese graduates I've met. (I am posting from the UK, in case your suspicions are aroused)
You're wrong. I had plenty of win16 apps that don't work in win NT. Ok, so that's probably because they were badly written and assume that they have root access to everything, but it is still true that these are big pieces of software that don't work.
You can't release your page under the GPL, since it is a work based upon the GPL, which is a non-free work (you can't modify and redistribute it. So the GPL doesn't give me permission to use your page at all.
Hmmm. Now you wouldn't expect pre-alpha software to be unstable, would you? Duh, you have to wait for a released version before you can expect it to be stable!
Doesn't it rely on mpg123? Unless something's changed recently, mpg123 is not free software. In particular, you're not allowed to redistribute changes you make.

Whilst I don't defend people who want to sabotage SETI, I think it's a bit rich to make a platform-wide attack. In any case, presumably the only reason people can send in multiple copies of the same result is because the SETI people are sending out the same 115 data points to everyone.

Windows 1.0 was primitive. Have you ever written anything for Windows 1.0? Actually, does anyone know of someone outside of Microsoft who has? If Gnome was still worse than Windows 1.0 there'd be no hope. Windows didn't take off till 3.0, six years into development. After that long, either Gnome or KDE will be really quite good.

Oh yes, come to think of it, you're right! Duh,
dunno what I've been thinking all these years.

How much reverse engineering of was neccessary to
work out how to do this? Is it fully legal to do
so in the US? (I'm in Europe so it's fine here)

Don't dictionaries order chinese characters by radical
and then by number of strokes?

Yes, at least one version of Turnpike, as packaged
by Demon Internet, uses IE to view HTML.
Non-techies might then use Mozilla because it protects their privacy better.

catdoc can convert .doc into TeX or plain text.
Works on all but the most complicated docs.
