We don't want another cold war, DO WE?

Why not? War (or the threat of) brings out the innovation, creativity and effort that gives us technological achievement and economic prosperity.

I mean, we've got a freakin madman at the head of the US (let's not get into China here...), don't you see we'll be going into another near-to-apocalypse situation all over again?

You must not live in the US if you actually think Dubya is in control. And btw, historically, the only way to deal with communism is through strength and resolve. Don't forget, for all the "free market" reforms that exist in China today, that they're still ruled by octogenarian commie bastards in both the civilian and military leadership.

Let's see a true embargo. Our economy's already in the shitter, a little more pain won't really kill us, while it could quite possibly throw China's burgeoning (yet immature) economy into chaos.

China's the last of the important dictatorial superpowers. Better to confront them now while we still have overwhelming military and economic superiority and bring them into the light of democracy than later when they become an unstoppable force.

And before you fret about atomic holocaust, most figures place the Chinese nuclear warhead count at about 400, while we still have way over 10000. We can, if necessary, kill every single man, woman, child, animal and plant in the PRC in less than 1 hour. Check this table or do your own research.

Software companies develop shoddy products because the consumer will buy them, and the mass-market consumer really hasn't voiced an interest at improved code (factoring in, of course, the added cost to software that improved code would imply), instead clamoring for more features they'll never use.

What the consumer doesn't realize is that most software is rewritten, and that if source were open, we would (do) have a rich set of reliable base components on which to build reliable complex packages. We know that. My mom doesn't. There's orders of magnitude more people like my mom, the checkout guy at the supermarket, et al. than there are of me.

that is, there may be some technical reason that these things can't be done on the current release of Mac OS X.

Technically, the reason is they don't have a large enough number of eyeballs and hands to do the OS, DVD, CD, and all this shit all at the same time by the marketing/morale/fanbase-driven early release date.

Closed-source software companies, unfortunately, don't have the freedom to release software "when it's done", particularly after they've bought ads declaring a certain date, told the investors they'd release on a certain date, etc..

Insinuating Mach + BSD can't handle CD burning or DVD playback (technically, not legally) is kinda unreasonable, if only because I'm sure someone can port cdrecord at the very least :p
