The sheer stupidity of this...

that if they allow background processes for bitmining, then they can run some distributed program which splits up the revenue of mining with the various node runners.
Reading all this I came to a thought.
The posters are all pathetic. Why? Because they mostly say that tablets are only good for content consumption.
They all ignore the question of what the content is.
Nowadays you can go on youtube and watch enough videos to get the equivalent of a bachelors in most topics.
Given the choice of teachers, you can even do better then a standard university where you will be forced to learn from a couple of dud professors.
You can buy any text book, or obtain it for free if you are not picky about legality.
You can read a great many blogs which are more then just the common trash, and actually learn other things too.
I remember the 80's and visiting Russain academics telling me how they had it hard because they would get one preprint and then they would have to read it and circulate it around. They couldn't just make a photocopy.
Before you can produce content, you have to learn how to produce content. Tablets go a long way towards helping with that.
Granted they are not a panacea.
The original Macs were supposed to come in two packages 128K and 512K, and everyone knew that 128K was way too little.
But Ram shortages made the 512K version very rare. Apple promised this by telling people that wehn the RAM became available they would offer them an upgrade option.
When the upgrade option became available though it was highly overpriced. Users were forced. into one of three options. Go without, pay a ton or go with third party upgrades that voided the warrantie.
Adding a hard drive would also void the warantie because "why would you want to add a hard drive". This attitude actuallly drove away a lot of Apple fans from Apple forever, and led to the disenchantment which drove Jobs away from Apple.
It's not that I don't think the ISPs should notbe given control of the internet.
The ISPs have shown that they shouldn't be given control by their bad behaviour.
I'm just not so interested in fighting the ISPs so that Google can control the internet.

The greatest trick of Google was proving to the world that it was not evil.
My understanding is that with randomization of allocated blocks in NAND, it can be quite difficult to ensure that the memory is cleanly deleted.
Forget the CIA do you want to trust your poorly deleted phone in the hands of a 16 year old hacker?
It increases competition.
It means that I don't have less reason to be stuck on youtube.
It means that other forms of competition have less barrier to entry ( ie LBRY ).
Ever since Damore, I've been concerned about videos like CppCon and BoostCon along with "XXXX" meetups being posted on Youtube. It's nice to have an alternative.
When reporting this stories can you give us an idea of the cost?
512M is a highly underpowered machine these days.
Unless you are talking about $100.
The comodore clone about two years ago at least came with cherry keys.
I wasn't surprised when OJ got off. Nicole get it right "OJ will kill me and he will get off because he is OJ SImpson."
When it was I watched the George Zimmerman trial in the background. The trial came down to this. Only one witness saw a part of what was happening. What he saw was one guy pounding another. He tried to get him stop by yelling and the guy wouldn't. Medical evidence should that Zimmerman was beaten up, Martin was not.. Whatever you say about the appropriateness of the law, the law and the facts were on Zimmerman's side. The verdict should not have come as a surprise.
Look at the big picture and you won't be surprised.
First off. The article says he is a whistleblower and some people here take exception to that. They are correct for thje wrong reasons. A whistleblower is someone who takes a complaint outside the workplace.Damore kept it in house. That however does not change the law. He was bringing ptential illegal activity to the attention of management.
Second. I won't be surprised if Google wins a court case. Juries can be fickle.
Third. I won't be surprised if Damore won. I think this is more likely, though by how much, I do not know. The liked article is a rehash of an oped piece written by a practicing San Diego labor lawyer. I would say his perspective on the case is more informed then most of us.
Fourth. There are five things that people are ignoring:
The original memo's distribution was never meant for general distribution, just to appropriate people in Google. I don't know how true this all is, but if it is true then it could be devasting. If someone at Google spread it around to all the people at google it can easily be seen as an attempt to destroy the guys career.
The forum he distributed it in is supposedly a forum for criticisms of the company. Firing a guy for criticizing the company on a forum meant for criticizing the company, that won't play well in court.
He supposedly wrote this memo after taking a mandatory ( for all employees) "diversity class". Depending on what went on at that class can make a big difference.
He worked there for almost four years. In tech that can be a long time, and it will be harder to prove he was a bad employee. Something they have to do if they have to prove it was not a retaliatory action.
Because he made a complaint to the NLRB, the cases will probably be consolidated in a federal court. The trial might not even be in California.
In short there are a lot of things that are game changers that we don't have any idea what they are. Who distributed the memo to most of the Google staff? What are the terms of the forum he was using? What happens in their diversity classes? Was he having performance problems before the memo happened?
It's only when the case gets t o court that we will see what the answers are.
I also don't think the guy wants to settle and Google can't make him.
Uh sorry but the tile was something like "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber".
I don't know where you get your information from.
If he did title it "something considered harmful" I would agree he should be fired for using the title alone.
In fact about a week ago, in the reddit cpp forum they posted the schedule to CPpCOn. I got a post severely downvoted for calling a guy who had a talk "something considered harmful" an idiot.
Actrually I have seen reference to an article on cnbc by San Diego labor lawyer who claims Damore has a very good case.
As for "at will" you need to look up what that means: it certainly does not mean "for any reason". IN particular, in violation of California and Federal labor laws. Take your own advice substitute "for being black" for "for any reason" and see how that sounds.
BTW a lot also depends on the terms of use of the forums. If they are as "open" as I've heard claimed, then collateral estoppel may apply to firing him for posting on them.
Not to mention "rules of the shop".
One thing no one has yet observed.
If Google does lose in court, then anyone from Alphabet or Google will be in front of Congress testifying why a company with an Indian CEO who is accused of illegally importing cheap ( mostly Indian ) labor to replace American workers fired illegal, really needs more H1B visas. Not really good optics.
The memo writer's name has been revealed. Apparently he has a PhD in Biological Sciences fro harvard. IOW he is a trained scientist.
Mei whose quote above is a Javascript and Rails ( not even Ruby, but Rails ) programming with no formal sciencet raining. Yet she feels justified in calling him unscientific.
It seems to reflect something about the culture. Especially when one of the senior developers says that engineering is more about getting along with people rather then optimizing inner loops. Given that the demands on resources on their server farms mean that such an optimization could save Google enough to pay the guys salary for ten years.
No wonder so many of their projects get cancelled eg Wave.
But, sure, I'll give you that society doesn't exactly hold IT-related interests on a platter. But what does that mean really? Some jokes in movies and TV shows about nerds? Maybe women don't flock to us? How many times do you really experience an active outward action where someone belittled you for being in CS/engineering? A few jerks here and there? Those are the people he should be mad at - the people who actively picked on him and made him supposedly worthy of our compassion.
A "few" jokes? Listen to those jokes. Some are how "geeky" nerds are but most are how nerds get mentally and physically assaulted. I've known one person who actually committed suicide because of it. Right after Columbine, I heard many stories about such treatment resulting in suicide attempts.
Hell to show everyone he is not a total nerd Woz shelled out shit load of cash to pay for the US festival.
Before you going running off at the mouth trying to show what an idiot you are learn your history.
"Tech" did not take off with the internet and smart phones. It was hioghly in demand in the 70s before the microcomputer and lucrative.
Why don't YOU go out there and build a business to show us the right way.
Being a Senior engineer, I suspect he has been there for a while contributing to the companies success.
In the last decade or so we've seen several such incidents ( most notably at github ). Someone actually builds a part of the company and gets chased out by some recently hired peon who has visions of how the company should be run.
If this engineer worked for a significant amount of time for google, and he managed to write software that ran 0.01% more efficiently on their server farms then he saved the company more then ten years of his salary in saved, power, air conditioning, maintenance costs.
What has Danille Brown done for google so far? If it is true that she distribued the meo far beyond it's original range, and the guy has to leave, then she's cost them a big lawsuit.
that modern media is going to screw up.
