No offense, buy 90mph on a road that supports unbarriered two-way traffic seems excessive to me.
Obviously you haven't been in Atlanta.:) Many of our major (non-interstate) commute routes are 2 lane roads where people barrel down them at 45 miles an hour.
I would respectfully say that this is your opinion of those people. You say that they are not well-rounded...could that be your prejudice against those that speak about games (EQ) or MUDs?
Trust me, I know the fervor of someone who is really into their recreational pursuit, whether it be an online game, NASCAR racing, or yachting. If one is not inclined to care about what they are saying, you'll find them tiresome and not well rounded.
Of course, you can easily dismiss this as coming from a girl with the social charisma of a leper...but you'd be wrong.
People log in as root because it gives them all the power they could ever need (and more!) at once. They believe that they will ne'er ever mistype something.
As others have said, let them do it. Then sit back and watch them scramble after they hose their system in a big way...
Agreed so far, but...
I still think that having some cash in savings is better than charging up more debt in the event of an emergency. I know that by looking at pure interest numbers, you're better off paying off all CC debt as soon as possible. For me, there's a gut reaction when you're in "Pay Down mode" and then you have to charge more when the car breaks down.
But I also get a small amount of satisfaction from looking at my creeping 401k, saving, and money market accounts and saying, "I'm doing this." YMMV...
I told them I'd transfer my balance to a lower interest credit card if they wouldn't lower my interest. It worked for some, and the ones it didn't, I used CCCS to be my negotiator.
Couple of places I'd recommend looking at - http://www.clarkhoward.com - Consumer advocate, good financial advice site.
http://www.fool.com - financial advice, their articles are free, their boards are subscription based.
I know what it's like to overspend the budget like that. The "Oh, crap - how did I get 10k in credit card debt???" moment smacked me as well.
But I just bit the bullet and made it happen. I started off with something as fundamental as calling all the credit card companies and renegotiating the interest rate. Then I started putting what I could into savings (started off at $200/mo)...It slowly built up, as I paid off debt.
All told, it took me 2-3 years to get out of credit card debt. Now I'm taking the money I used to pay towards CC's and applying it to paying off the student loans more quickly.
Lots of resources out there to help one figure out how to squeeze more cash out of one's paycheck. Biggest thing that helped me was setting up multiple direct deposits, so that I paid money into my savings as well as checking...If I couldn't see it, I couldn't spend it.
I'm a DINK, and I still have to remind myself how to save every day. I read a lot of sites & boards about it, pack a lunch regularly, and try not to impulse buy.
I used to work in the security department of a large retail organization for 4 years. I'd regularly point out why the modem on the CEO's desk that went into our corp network was a risk, and I'd be told to just overlook that one. Etc, etc..
After seeing every executive and his secretary overstep security policy, it made me believe that corporations don't believe in security as a whole.
the users also feel that it is your job, as IT guru, to fix these issues for them.
You rely on them to ensure your paycheck shows up on time with the appropriate amount of taxes and whatever taken out of it. That's their job.
Our job is to ensure that they can't hurt themselves electronically. So we set up AV software on mail servers as well as automate AV software (incl. engine upgrades and definition updates) on file servers and their desktops.
It would be a beautiful world if they could keep from clicking that pretty shiny.exe file, but they won't.

Do you even want to talk about your failures at breaking female simple encryption? Not like we're talking DES-3 or anything....
the University of Florida does not require students to live in the dorms. They've got crowding problems to this day.
Next argument?
I think he would be smart enough to have invested the emergency fund into an interest bearing account. (Money markets immediately spring to mind.)
Playing with retirement money is foolish. The tax implications if you gamble poorly are hideous.
Next time, warn me before providing that mental image!

That's easy...

My wife has stuff over a year old (or maybe we finally dumped it to tape, I don't recall).
:)
Still there.
Speaking of, I think it's time to watch "Once More With Feeling" yet again!
