I've been treated like total shit in the past by some employers (non-union).
I work in a unionized environment now, and I still take breaks when I want and work when I want (we have flex time). And of course we get regular raises and decent pay.
Funny how that is.
No we don't have foosball or any of that "fun" stuff, but find me many companies these days that do. The only places I've heard of that have that stuff are the.coms that are now long gone, and the fact that you were laid off may correlate in with this...although I can't know your situation for sure. For me personally, I would prefer to work at work, and save the foosball for my own time.
Anyway, my point was that all the things you originally said you wouldn't trust to a union rep will be decided by your employer if there is no union around. I'm glad that you've had good employers, but everyone is not so fortunate. There are some real assholes out there in management, and I see no harm in employees wanting to take a collective stand to prevent mistreatment of workers.
They already have a union. It's called upper management. I'd rather us vs. them instead of me vs. them.
Here's another idea. Take a field trip to your PHB's office and talk with him.
Now try to decide if you want this guy to
A) take a manditory deduction from your paycheck every month (in the form of pay cuts or the lack of regular raises over time)
B) negotiate your pay raise (or decide to not give you one at all, or cut your pay...see point A)
C)tell you when you have to take breaks (or if you can have breaks at all)
D) tell you what you can and cannot do at your job. (without anything other than the CEO, the company's bottom line, and his big fat "cost-cutting incentive" bonus to worry about)
I'll take the union president, thank you very much.
The butterflies found on vertical surfaces were made of flimsy plastic, held in place by static electricity and easily removable. The sidewalk decals were a heavier plastic, with a roughly textured surface. Though they were stuck to the pavement, they too could be lifted off fairly easily.
Since the article specifically says the butterflies can be easily removed, I don't know if I'd call this vandalism. It's certainly less damaging than what IBM did in San Fran. Typical/. anti-MS sensationalism.
Of course, it is dispicable for a company (MS, IBM, whoever) to just take over public property for the purpose of their advertising campaigns. There are proper ways of advertising, and this isn't one of them.
It's dynamic protocols allow you to harness the synergy of mobile computing, which enhances the web-based nature of digital communications on the infobahn.
Or maybe it just lets you dial up at 28.8 and then switches your home page to msn.com.
Sounds like a rip off of Insomniac w/ Dave Attell which is on Comedy Central. Unless that is what you are really talking about without realizing it wasn't on MTV.
Ok the new scientist link is down already, but the register link has this: In addition to the items mentioned, several OEM units are affected, but Pioneer won't say which ones. You'll just have to contact your box builder and ask them if they have a fix.
So they make a defective product, but won't say which OEMs are affected? WHY NOT?
Also, how does new firmware keep a drive from self destructing? Sounds like an engineering problem that firmware couldn't fix, unless said firmware simply lowers the drive speed.
Thanks for the link. I never know about the subpixel fonts. But it seems like a lot of work to get installed, which is part of my point.
Mozilla is a great browser, I hope it succeeds. But for now, IE is king which means sites will be made just for IE. It sucks, but that's the way it is.
I've been doing the Linux thing for ~5 years. Back then the only thing I had was Windows 95. So (IMHO) I could go with the unstable windows 95 that was sometimes difficult to get to work, or the stable linux that was tough at first but then stable.
At that time all I wanted to do was:
Web Surfing
E-mail
AOL IMs
Burn cds
Play MP3s
So as soon as GAIM was released I could do all this and I made the switch. My feelings were, as long as Linux did what I needed, I would use it....I was a CS student who could handle its complexities.
5 years later it's a different world. Yes, Linux has made a LOT of progress, more than I could have imagined. But Windows has come a long way (especially with 2k and XP). While X is struggling with fonts, XP has cleartype fonts that look great on LCDs. XP is almost (or equally) as stable as Linux. More and more sites are IE specific. Lots of flash-only sites don't work with Linux's version of flash (yeah I hate flash only sites too, but the point is, they're out there). Realplayer used to me enough to watch news videos on cnn.com, now you gotta have the version that you can embed into the html in the seperate browser window that will open up. And there are a few Windows only programs coming up that I would really like to use. Not that I wouldn't love to see Linux suceed on the desktop, but it probably would have been MORE likely 5-10 years ago.
So in the end, I'll probably obtain (or buy, if I really have to) a copy of XP pretty soon. I'm going to be moving and I want to set up my computers fresh, start over on a clean slate. And in my new setup I'm keeping Windows on the Desktop, and Linux on the servers.

Thank you for writing a 3-item list in a slashdot post without being the 10,000th person to try to be incrdibly witty by using the phrase "lather, rinse, repeat".
This is not a troll or flame, I'm serious. Too many nerds with no sense of humor using the same joke over and over around here.
This book is written by the guy that created f*ckedcompany.com. I read it while killing time in the DFW airport one day.
Simply put, it was a hilarious account of how stupid some of the.com flameouts were and how miserably they failed. The tone of the book is somewhat unusal, with swear words and a very cynical attitude. When reading it I kept thinking, "if I would ever write a book, it would sound like this".
Let me get this straight...
Artificially inflated prices appeal to the Libertarian in you?
...and without any real content either (they link to other peoples' original content).
/.
Someone's gotta have original content somehwere. Not every site can be just a "cool link" site like
I liked it the first time......
when it was called the Shuttle SS51G.
Seriously, it looks like they just made a goosed-up shuttle barebones and then jacked up the price (and all their stuff is way overpriced, really).
And you'd have to use "Lather, Rinse, Repeat" at least once to sound oh-so witty.

Half the size of a deck of cards? Not quite.
If this picture is accurate, I'm not sure it competes with the muvo. Look at the size of it!
So what's the difference? They both have roughly the same meaning.
So are you saying that a small union of 10 workers is acceptable?
If my co-worker asks me to join his 10 person union and I agree, am I still a sucker?

Harry Browne was the Libertarian candidate in 2000 (and 1996).
Read his book Why Government Doesn't Work. It's a great read and I think you'll have a lot more respect for his wisdom after your read it.
You gotta see Insomniac. Dave Attell's witty remarks make is so funny.
:)
My favorite line was when he was riding with a cop at about 3AM in a bad neighborhood (I forget what city).
Cop: "This area has a lot of drug use, a lot of prostitution...."
Dave: "Really? Can you drop me off?"
I laughed about that one the next day at work

Maybe since slashdot's stories are being picked up by a big news site, this would be a good time to implement some spelling/grammar/fact checkers.
As I said in the post, the New Scientist article was not coming up for me.
Sorry.
