  1. Re:Huh? on Preview of GPL V3, Part 2 · · Score: 2

I thin the problem with libraries is this: Say you GPL your code, I like it and want to expand on it, but don't want to open my code. So implement some new features in a library which I link to from a modified copy for you code. If I don't r4elease the sorce to the library I have written, then I have gotten something, your code, for nothing. This is not the pourpose of the GPL, it is not a method for giving away your code. The purpose is to get others who are interested to help with development.

Sorry about the stupid remark. But I think that because people are so sick of dealing telcos that if wireless is even an option in terms of proce/performance, then people will switch. Wireless doesn't need to be as fast because people will use it just to get away from the Telcos. At any rate it is good that there is more competition for data delivery.

That's pretty short sighted. If landline telecos continue to be slow(administratively) and inflexible, then wireless will murder them when bandwidth increases. To think that wireless won't improve is stupid.

From a purely pragmatic standpoint, it seems that easing global comunication is a good thing for everyone. Although loss of local cultures is a downside, I think the gains outweigh the losses. Ithink the purity arguements only make it harder for ideas to flow in and out of a country, it's like a trade restriction.

Beng a fan of both Ayn Rand and Heinlein I kno exactly what you mean. Both authors have presented very strong ideas in their books, and it is very easy to just take everything in and not think about it. It is important to realise that both of them have the capacity for failure. They both give us a lot to think about, and everyone must come to their own conclusion about how much of it they agree with. I think agree is an important word. To say that you believe it implies that you accept it with out challenging it. One of both Heilein's and Rand's most important concept was that of thinking for yourself. Both would be pissed off at you for agreeing with them before thinking. Most of there material is to big to 'grok' without some deep thought, something that developes over years not days.

I don't think this is a huge problem. For one, these wouldn't be put any where near breaking waves. Breaking waves are a release of energy, they want just straight swells. I would think areas like the bottoms of steep cliffs would be good spots for this thing. Also, you couldn't put the whole thing underwater, they are using the boundary between water and air to harness the energy. Something underwater would have to use a completely different solution.

I think the idea is that you would be able to apply a format to you own musical collection for offline listening. In my case I have a wide variety of music, but I only want to listen to some it in certain moods, like rap at a party, I wouldn't listen to it unless I was in a party mood. I like mostly classic rock, but I listen to pop sometimes, but I want to hear mre classic rock than rap and pop, a format with good cataloging would allow this, random shuffle just doesn't cut it.

I think the whole point is that brodcasters use much more detailed cross-linked catagorizing for music above and beyond mp3s simple genre tag. In his example Shania Twain could be played in both country and pop spots. Say you think Shania is more country than pop, well her songs, or each of her songs could have a probability of showing up in that spot. Maybe Backstreet Boys have a higher probability of showing up in a pop spot than Shania because they are "more" pop than her. The idea is to have a highly detailed database linking musical styles together.

What if all of the P2P clients could be linked into some database similar to everything.com. The client could send in a playlist each week or day or so (at the users option of course) then each time a song shows up with another song, the link gets stronger, then database would be searchable, like one song, find others which other people like, generate playlists based on genre etc. Have to be a pretty heavy duty database to keep track of everything, but it seems it would be a possibility, no?
