Too late KDE 2.2.1 has a "Open With..." Menu when you right click. When I right click on a gif I get a list with GIMP and a couple others. The default action is to preview in Konq.
I think web pads will have a comfortable market in between PDAs and laptops. People who want to work mobily will have a laptop, gotta have a keyboard. People who want to sit on the couch an browse the web will have a web pad.

Permit me to be stupid and ask what the "ausiocd stuff" is?
Wouldn't a program on your computer, which stores your info encrypted, and then sends it out when it gets a finger print work? And would also mean you don't have to store your info on a third party?
The thing I never understood about this boat is the whole concept that as the wind gets stronger, the boat goes faster, lifts higher, and consequently has a narrower waterline beam to work with, giving it less righting moment. If I recall the tried this boat about 3-4 years ago and a whole outrigger/wing blew up.
But the problem is that hyperlinks add context to a page or article. What is stop them from marking up linux articles with links to FUD? Or use the links to sell advertising? Or getting a kickback from one of the online encyclopedias so that they can be linked to?
The worse part is that most people won't even know that these links are different from links the author put in, even if they are presented different.
But I think it is important to take aim at the most important and work your way down the list. Focussing on Word highlights a larger problem, compatability. Having Word is only important because of binary file formats. You would think people would be pissed off about not being able to open old Word Documents in the new Word, but it happens, anyway, that's a tangent.
The point is that the application itself is not important, given time we can program a replacement. What is important is giving users the ability to open other people files and at th3e moment the vast majority of those files in the business world are MS Office.
I think the point is to focus on what the customer has asked for, and do it right, make sure everything works. You give them a piece of software that does what they want well. If they come back with more features, you do it again, you focus all of your efforts on those features, becuase the one you put in before are near perfect. This avoids the problem of spreading you efforts too thin and delivering half baked code.
I think the problem here is that many programmers have never been asked to make estimates of implementation time. If you ask people walking down the street how long it will take them to get to the next corner, most will get it wrong. But with a little practice anyone can do it. I everytime a programmer started a project, no matter how small he made a guess, then by the time he really needed to know how long something will take, he will be able to make a good guess.
Are there other companies doing this this?
I used to be a fan of Japan Palmtop Direct, but there site, www.jpd.com hasn't responded for a couple of months. I'm looking for a company which sells the latest in slim notebooks, not sub notebooks as Dynamism seems to specialize in.
I think his point is that if it were that much more usefule than hs current recorder/notepad combination that he would take the risk of using it. Current handhelds aren't useful enough for him, so why risk carrying one around?
How is this done? I assume there is a line in some startup script which is resposible for start up x. But which one, and where can I find it?
Is that command startx? and if so, should the command 'nice -n -10 starx' be substituted for this?
Also to the origional poster, since you are changing a header file, wouldn't this require a recompile?
Unfortunately there is a lot more than conviniance involved. Things like IM, telephones and fax machines have a value which is inherently tied to the network. The more telephones/fax machines you can communicate with, the more valuable your machine becomes. How much value would a phone that only communicates with phones like it be worth? Zero. If you look at the adoption of the fax maching, once it passed a certain threshold, where enough people had one to make it valuable, it took off.
Now, what has more value to the consumer? An AIM or ICQ client which can connect with a few million other users, or another option with can only communicate with a small fraction of that group. Since both products are free AIM is the only one which makes sense.
Either AIM starts charging very high prices, or other protocols offer significant improvements which make them much more valuable. If neither of these happen, there is no reason for for a consumer to choose anything but AIM.
Problem is your conclusion is wrong. The origional equation says, for a given amount of work, the less time you have to do it in, the more power it takes. So you revised equation means that for a given amount of work, the less knowledge you have(the dumber you are) the more money it takes to finish the work. This almost sounds true, perhaps this is a grand unifying theroy between physics and economics?

But of course computing power for the dollar shouldn't factor into cost considerations at all.
Thanks for the link, I never knew he had a site. So many great articles.

Why couldn't you just store stills or video locally, then call the phone, using it as a modem and downloading or reviewing what you wanted?
This sounds like 2.4 Mega BITS, which I don't think mean streaming AV for many. Also doesn't seem like a braodband replacement.

So you don't think, for instance, that advances in BSD spur Linux developers to to improve Linux?
I always thought VHS vs. Betamax wa the ultimate case of bad technology winning, i.e. Betamax wa far superior. Then again, I was 2 at the time.
Isn't this similar to th issue which Apple lost to Microsoft for?
Actually it was only about 33 cameras
But Mozilla + Perl/php could make for good quick and dirty, cross platform UI develpment.
But AP is Advanced Placement, it is supposed to test the students mastery of college level topics, not vocational skills.
